I don't really use any antivirus, but I wouldn't really recommend AVG for virus removal, it's more of an "annoy you with annoying messages everytime a virus is detected and don't do anything about it" application than an AV in my opinion.

Aside from when I first connect a fresh XP install to the web without SP2 (SP1 back before that), I have as yet to get a virus in about 3-4 _years_ using Tiny Firewall Pro. Although I'm not as much a fan of the current layout of TF, when used properly you essentially just turn off all ports and monitor all activitiy. You set up a behvaior-based IDS and any unusual traffic is halted then reported. If you specifically allow it, it is allowed to continue.

Nothing is as effective as a well configured firewall/port blocker/IDS. Anti-virus means you've already been infected... the trick is to not get into that situation. When you really get into TFP, it can be a hassle to setup because you want to manually enroll every process and service into its database with correct permissions and whatnot, but afterwords it's excellent. The only thing it doesn't do overly well against is DoS attacks and e-mail... but as long as you have half a brain e-mail shouldn't be an issue and anti-virus programs don't do any better against DoS.

Just got hammered by a few virus this week. Norton Systemworks is what I was running with all updates. I then decided to try some of the other scanners out that were suggested in this post since I KNEW I was infected by something, yet Norton gave me the thumbs up.

After a scan here were my results:
Norton Systemworks 2004 = 0 virus'
AVP Free = 2 Virus'
Kaspersky Web Scan = 9 Virus'

I am a little worried at the web scan done by Kaspersky as 6 of the Virus' detected on it were in the Notron Systemworks folder. I am thinking these might actually be false positives. I will do more research though to find out.

So judging from those results I would have to say Norton is the best! lol, stupid Norton POS.

What virus have people been hit by? Nimda was a nasty one I remember scrubbing off a few PC's, must've been quite a while ago now. And the Pinfi virus I gave to my friend accidently on a CD I burnt - he didn't see the funny side and still wont let me near his PC :D

Norton, despite it being really hard to get working right once it is then you have no problems except for some online games when they update, which is annoying but seeing as I have had no viruses for 2 years now I'm willing to forgive it the occasional false positive.The trick is to have a really solid firewall. I have never even got a virus on my computer so AV is just there for an added layer of security which I use occasionally to ensure my firewall is working.

I used to use Symantec Corporate 9.0 (10.0 is full of useless new stuff, like scanning your floppy drive on boot, which hangs) but I haven't been using a scanner for months now. Occasionally I go to Symantec's free virus scan just to make sure everything is in check and then run Ad-aware and Spybot. If your browsing habits are safe I don't see a reason for using a virus scanner

I find Symantec annoying for my uses. For example, Symantec detects "cmdow.exe" as a virus (hacktool.hidewindow) and immediately deletes it. Cmdow.exe only hides a cmd box so you can't see it. Its main use is for silent installs of programs and is included in a lot of winxp integration programs, like driverpacks and updatepacks integrators. Since I do a lot of winXP customizations, this is a big problem :). Thats why I use eset!

Bitdefender I would prefer. Currently I use norton good for a fw but it sucks and uses to many resources. Symantec 9 Corporate running smoothly for a long time now. Tried SAV 10 but it had some extraneous features and kept quarantining the Radmin server executable even after being set to exclude it. Small memory footprint, minimal bloat, I haven't found an equal.

NOD32 screwed up office for me even with the office-related monitoring disabled, but otherwise was also an excellent program.

kaspersky on this particular computer, on my other household computers that the family uses i use the free avira anti vir which works great. kaspersky can be a real pain if u dont adjust the settings cus it intercepts and scans EVERYTHING, but it is a fantastic anti virus program. Both of those programs arent resource hogs like norton programs are.

I used to use AVG free but it was a resource hog at boot. Friendly interface though. I now use NOD32 2.70.31 and it's as if it's not even there if you disable the splashup screen. I haven't had any big nasties since using a NOD32 and Spyware Doctor combination. Spyware Doc takes a while to scan like Webroot, so I'll also use Paretologic's AntiSpyware for the superfast daily scan and do the Spyware Doc once a week. All 3 are active protection.
