View Full Version : x1800xt to x1900xt @1280x1024 worth it?

I know that people say those of us running an LCD at 1280x1024 don't really need to upgrade from an x1800xt. Is that really true? Can an X1800XT really handle the shader heavy games like FEAR and what is coming out in the next 12 months? Not sure what that is...
The price is roughly $100 in difference - if you wait 1yr, is the resale value of that x1800xt going to negate that savings?

Have you flashed it to XTPE ?
Secondly, you have to incorporate the loss from selling the X1800XT as a used item and add that to the difference. If you bought it for $550 and are now going to sell it for $450 (seeing as there are $500 X1900XTs everywhere), then the real cost of going X1900XT is $200, not $100.
Might I suggest you keep that and a better motherboard :)
Not to mention you can prolly get the upcoming VF-900 for your X1800 from Zalman to get higher clocks there.
Plus, why the X2 clocks so low?

1280x1024 is a nice res. My old LCD use to run at that and truely I'd even say my XL clocked half way decent would work nice with that res. I run some games at my displays native res (1920x1200) and it works out very well and im one that rather have all features turned on then run at my native res :)
Only games that I've played so far can't run at this res without issues, which is Fear for sure and Quake 4 is neglatible but I run at a slightly lower res.
Truely a X1800XT will do things very well and well of course the X1900XT will do them better. Since you got both cards coming, I'd say keep the X1900XT and sell the X1800XT or even return it to the company you got it from.

Well I love my X1900XTX for 1280x1024 6xAA and 16xAF on everything :)

I got my X2 at 2500 - I can run it at 2600 but my load temps are in the upper 50's. Not sure if that is bad or not. I have a Zalman 9500 on it. I got the X1800XT for 400 - so not much loss there if I sell it for the same since it is retail boxed and unopened. It would basically cost me $100 to go from the X1800XT to the x1900XT
As for the motherboard - I have a Lanparty Ultra - not sure what is better out there for the X2.
My concern is I have been reading about a lot of heat problems with the X1900. Not sure if they are valid or not.

I've got an X1800XL and I run everything at 1280x1024 or 1600x1200 on my CRT, stock clocks, no problems.
And IMO the big name games coming out this year either have very well optimized engines that will work well with less than the best cards or use older engines.
In short, I'd stick with the X1800XT until it ceases to be able to pwn for you. If you wait until games start taxing the XT at 12x10 the 7900s will be out and prices on everything will be less

I have a proposition for you Quigs...wait for the X1900XL ;)
Price/Performance will be through the roof.

In real i play at same settings (16x HQF, 6xAA, adaptative +temporal) in all games.. Fear too.. but my CPU run at 3.1Ghz.. it's clear the XT1900XT ( or XTX) is far better.. I think pehraps go for one in some months... but it will be just for bench, the XT1800XT is realy enough speed for play at all with max level quality possible.
I think our CPU´s are the bottlenecks.
I really dont think todays CPU can live up to the fast gfx card on the marked today.
Looking forward the the new AMD M2, maybe an upgrade is worth then.

Not really, look at game benchmarks at a decent res, with IQ settings. The CPU has little impact as long as it's half decent.
Also AM2 is just a socket change for DDR2. I hope AMD come up with somet else, or conroe will pwn them.

Thanks for the advice. I am going to open up the X1800XT and stick with it. I got it for $330 new. I have the X1900XT on order through the Dell deal. Might just cancel that one or sell it on the board when it comes in.

only thing Intel owns is lower market share.
Presler was to beat AMD and was nothing more than a small step in the right direction.
4mb Cache and closing on dual core 3.0 ghz target + DDR2-800 with ondie mem controller = good luck intel trying to catch AMD. Also once GDDR3 hits the market things will be cooking.
either way Intel needs a CPU with Dothan type temps and performance but in a modern package.

Even 7800gtx are waste for 1280x1024 IMO.

Your fanboys goggles must be on.
3Ghz Dual core AMD64's with 4MB Cache? Dream on. Maybe for the flagship, infact keep on dreaming.
Presler was to beat AMD? So you work for Intel do you? Didn't think so. Fanboys suck.

You don't need the 1900 with your cpu and the res you are playing as other said....
Keep the 1800xt for 18 months it's more than enough and then get a d3d10 card...?

$330? Does that mean you got the 1900 for $430? Did you score some kind of Dell coupon for those?
Quigs

Yup - bought the one from dell with a 25% off coupon. Total was $440 shipped for the X1900XT retail. Just need to decide if I want to cancel the dell or get it - then resell it.
The X1800XT has the 6 power chips. I can clock it out of the box at the 690/800 without playing with the volts. Scores 10036 in 3d05 with that. I'm happy I decided to stay with this for some time. I could also flash the bios to the PE version.

Where did you score the coupon? I've been looking around for one of those that I could apply to an x1900xt. I like their return policy in the event I decide it doesn't improve my results that much over the 7800GT.

Ok he was wrong, forgive him, what he really meant to say was: "Prescott was to beat AMD"
Conroe isn't going to be as good as you might think. It will still be a crippled cpu running 1066fsb on a dual channel 667 ddr2.
AM2 will run dual ddr2 @ 800, wanna bet wich one is gonna win?
Maybe the conroe xe will be very nice, but other than that seems like amd will come on top, and intel very close.
Intel has my respect in cpu manufacturing tecnologies, but not in cpu arquitectures, especially when they're new mobile cpu doesn't even suport x86-64.

manufacturing Intel does pwn but they need some engineering to get moving unless they like loosing market share
the 4MB thing
"The next gen of AMD FX chips will have the full 'big cache' Opteron level of L3 cache, most likely 4MB. Until software becomes much more threaded than it is now, this will be more than enough to keep up with the competition, or at least keep things credible."
maybe speculation but possible short term future plans by AMD.
Kinda funny a guy with a 4400+ calling me a fanboy for AMD, hummm thought I was just spilling some truth on the matter.
X1800XT for the money is a great investment.

So if you buy hardware from a company you are a fanboy? Get a clue man.
Also, Eversor, it's been shown plenty of times in the past, that increased bandwith does very little for the A64. Why is DRR2 all of a sudden going to give a decent increase, like everyone seems to think. Bandwith isn't as issue, with an on die memory controller.

is it hicks or hick??? learn to read son.
You attacked me calling me a fanboy I just think its Ironic you being an AMD owner and attacking the product you own yourself or others who are talking about what the future brings.
Why not go and buy a Yonah since those Intel CPUs "pwn" AMD in superpi.
but this is off topic so good luck with your life and congrates on your future Conroe system if you believe the smoke Intel's advertising staff is blowing.

I can't wait to see the improvements AMD will be doing this year and the next gen ATI. Hopefully by then ATI will have stable and fast mobos for a crushing speed in CF mode.
