After making my TEC powered TIM tester, I learned that it's quite hard to maintain one of these because TEC can die if there's no cooling...
TEC also have some properties that makes it unstable.

So, here's my new TIM tester:
4 soldering irons, each rated 45 watts :toast:
Total of 180 watts of heat

I'll also use 3 soldering irons for a total of 135watts of heat (AMD M2 sould be around 130 watts)

Soldering irons have a heater at the tip, which heat up a pointy thing for you to solder stuff. They're rated 45watts +- 1, and they are rugged unlike pelts.

I'll just make a copper base that has a great contact with the tips.

What do you guys think? If it's good, I'll go buy some soldering irons :toast:

the problem with soldering irons is that heat is concentrated specifically on the tip, and nowhere else, you will lose heat as soon as it starts to spread. How much though im unsure of. You will also have to maintain them on for a while, so buying cheap soldering irons will overheat the cable line and possibly fail for extended use.

Yes, soldering irons have a heating tip which makes it a bit hard to work with.
I will make a copper plate which holds all 4 tips (they're removable with some tools) in a circular formation. A copper block size of a CPU die will then be placed in the middle of the tips.
Heat will spread around, including the copper die.

As for cables, I left my $9 soldering iron on overnight many times (gah.. stupid me, what a fire hazard), it still works like new :)

Heat does get lost, but with good insulation, it'll be too little to be considered as a negative factor. The test could be ran for over half an hour just to obtain the accuracy.

Why not use the TIM on a CPU and see which is best?

because then he wouldent get to annoy us as much :p:

seriously tho, you really dont need to make things so elaborate, use the KISS meathod

Yup

2 90 watt resistors would be more acurate and easier to work with
