Take notice: This is prolly the 940 socket series.
AMD is dumping them, Socket F launch is very very very near.

Multiple chips within the Opteron 200 series and Opteron 800 series processors now cost far less than they did last week, said Jane Kovacs, an AMD spokeswoman.
http://news.com.com/Opteron+price+cuts+pave+way+for+new+dual-core+chips/2100-1006_3-6040099.html?tag=nefd.top
hey just for kicks, what were the official prices after they raised prices for
certain chips a few weeks back? i want to know since right now an opty165
boxed sells for around 320€ around here. with the dollar being 0.84€, that
chip *should* now sell for 240€ - which it very probably will not. so i need
a ballpark figure of current or at least 3-5 days opty 165 prices in the us,
just for reference, so i can guesstimate were they prices after the drop
will be roundabout.
eh.
just this morning i saw prices go up for the 165 again... WTF?? did they say
cuts or what?? cut is like when you remove something, not add.. doh

You guys have to remember it takes almost a week for those prices to trickle down to us.. unless you guys want to make a bulk purchase from AMD...

Agreed, retailers paid the premium for it back then, they wont adjust prices untill certain amount of procs are out the door.

Not really.. don't you alwaysbuy proc in hundred sets?

02-16-2006, 12:15 AM
and as soon as you buy the bulk order of processors and AMD finds out they are coming to XS members, they all get red flagged for NO RMA, after all, who has a stock CPU around here??
nn_step
02-16-2006, 12:24 AM
But you fail to realize the fact that they can't know that That Someone from XS is buying procs to overclock from a person who is going to make alot of OEM machines...

I think retailers want to make good profit outta those tempting DC Opty. As close to 400 is kinda high for Opty 170. Damn!

series 1 is 939
Nope, series 1 939 are around for just a very short time.
Series 1 940 have been around since the 940 platform came out (i think 2 years ago?)
Just check out: http://www.amdcompare.com/us%2Den/opteron/Default.aspx
For every 5 Opteron 940 there is 1 939. (Within the 1 series, all other series aren't available in 939 for obvious reasons)
Since these are OEM prices I would not expect the 939 series to drop in price in the shops.
It's just to lower the prices of 940 servers (which are used ALOT) to get rid of stock before launching Socket F.
nn_step
02-16-2006, 02:45 PM
And Socket F is going to have quite a few Very nice new features..
So Thorry do we both agree that socket F is going to come out first?
Thorry
02-16-2006, 02:55 PM
Well depends on how you look at it.
As I explained a while ago, the server market doesn't work the way the desktop market works.
But to put it very simple: Yes Socket F will be first, prolly at the same time as Intel with it's FBDIMM motherboards. Samples of Socket F have been months before M2 so it will be a lot earlier then M2.
In the server market a launch date is mostly the date the promotion starts, at that time most OEM's have already received a full supply of CPUs and should have their products ready to go (which they developed with the samples which they received many months ago).
People don't buy lose components for servers (it's about 5% of the entire market, not counting spare parts and early adopters/enthousiasts). They just buy entire servers.
So claiming you have a new product (like the Socket F CPUs) will make a very bad impression if the servers aren't available. Sometimes there are even large companies that have already begon the roll-out of the new product before the launch. This makes for great marketing which counts for a whole lot in the server world. Also it gives you a large quantity of real-life data which most people need to make their decision.
Socket F will prolly be shown a lot at Cebit at which time the OEMs will have their products ready and people can go home, call their server guy and buy a Socket F product (with offcourse delivery a couple of weeks as normal in that world).
By the time you will be able to buy Socket F products via retail AM2 will be (almost) available.
Also people shouldn't hold their breath for Socket F, it's great if you are in that world, and the product is just great. But the pricing of the CPUs and all the parts needed to make it go is just too much for most small bussinesses and prive folks. Also is it not like AM2, so comparing those will be plain stupid (even though I know of a lot of folks/websites who will be trying).
Guys, this price change of the Opteron 100 models is OLD, it's from october 31, the actual price (not list price) have in fact been raised a month ago as we all know (like the 165 getting more expensive than the X2 3800+). But still, this list is nothing new. I'm 100 % certain about this.....
From SPCR forums october 31 (http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=26374):
There will be new prices for Opteron 100 next week, I expect them to go up.
Well well, I was wrong.
When I think about it, it's not surprising that they lower the prices. But there's no logic why the faster Opteron got a lower price than a 3200+...
AMD's prices has dropped now.
Oct 24 Oct 31
144 $125 $111
146 $183 $125
148 $263 $213
150 $367 $321
152 $799 $799
165 $417 $278
170 $475 $367
175 $530 $475
180 $799 $799
Look at the 165!!!!!!
Finally a nice price dual core!!!!
Edit: Ok, the 152 and the 180 have been lowered since then, but that doesn't make any difference for most of us.

Well sure, prices go up and down all the time.
This time they went down, there is nothing old about it, they just went down...

No, the list have been like this since oct 31 for the 100 series (except for 152 and 180). About a month ago they raised the prices, but didn't change the list for some reason.

A Opteron 144 for 111$ would be too nice to be true.
Too bad the cheapest S939 CPU is still the 144 with a price of 150€ :/
A s754 A64 3000+ is only 100€.
Not saying the 144 aint worth 150€, but S939 needs some cheaper CPUs if you ask me...
You could always get a low cost cpu/mainboard combo and upgrade the cpu later, which aint possible with S939 :( Of course S754 is quite cheap, but you wont be able to use dc with it.

Actually AMD raised prices for 1xx s.939 Opterons cos of shortages they had with all those mad OCers "stealing" good products from guys who really needed those for small servers/workstations. Now it seems AMD is just trying to free wares for upcoming products :)
