View Full Version : making perfect IHS for yonah

I know I will be getting yonah soon and I don't want another crushed core (happened to dothan :slapass: by stupid accident). So I decided to get/make IHS for it. First question, would P4 IHS fit fine (I know it was ok for dothan) or is die size/height different for yonah?

Could you give me some hints or ideas how to make a perfect IHS for yonah cpus? Ideally I would need all sizes of the chip, die, its height etc. I could ask some PRO guy to make a perfect IHS for the chip, obviously from copper. I have no problems attaching it (did that on 3 venice cpus :D).

Thanks

silver would be better than copper.

The problem would be attaching it to the core. I've got a p4 ihs on my dothan and whenever i pull the heatsink off, the ihs goes with it. This really increases the chances of chipping the edges. epoxying it woudlnt be too bad of a solution.

IMO, a shim would be better. I was very happy when the shim from my ati vid card fit almost perfectly on my dothan. since dothan and yonah are the same physical size, you should just attach one of those to the package. it just BARELY sits under the core.http://www.cryo-laboratory.com/upload/userfiles/cirthix/hs2.JPG

That is a great idea, I have a dead 9700 pro here, hope its a good height.

the height is perfect. just barely under the core.

I attached mine with DAP sillicone seal, so it's on there securely but can be removed easily without a trace.

I used sillicone seal on A64 cpus to attach IHS but I never had any problems removing heatsinks even when AS5 was applied.

well, you need to either;

1. Attach it better, make sure the IHS doesn't slide whilst you put some weight on it whilst it cures (it took me 3 goes to get a nice seal without it sliding) because when I let mine cure after it slid about, it came with heatsink.

2. take it off more slowly and wiggle it around (helps to relieve some of the suction force) rather than yanking it straight off.

or i just leave it alone and be very careful when i do need to take it off. the ihs i'm using must be perfectly flat or something, it takes some serious force to even slide it off of the 7700cu.

I just used the shim that was on the default cooler, works perferct!

it might work nicely with the stock heatsink, but heavy beasts of heatsinks need something a little sturdier to protect the core.

I don't actually use the default cooler, only the shim of it. I have al zalman waterblock on it.

I use a piece of neoprene with a rectangle cut out where the core goes. This is with my vapochill and no probs so far with countless re-installations. The dielectric makes it stick :)

I am using a P4 IHS on the Dothan....

AgonxOC:

How well does it fit? Did you notice any temperature difference?

I have a P4 IHS. It sits tight on the dothan core but has a little gap all the way round it. This would be fine with some silicon or similar in there holding it down. I never actually tested it though so couldn't say about temps.

EDIT: Prescott mine was btw.

Mine came off a Willamette core. It fits just fine and makes good contact. I tested it before I put it on. No I didnt see any temperature drops or increase. I do get a max of 36ºC to 38ºC when the ambient is around 70ºF. And when it in the 60ºF range I get a max of 33ºC to 34ºC.
