It's the only thing keeping me from running 2.6GHz stable. I know this because changing the voltage on the CPU, it still acts the same way. NB temp reads at over 50 after I've played a game for a while, it's frozen, and I've restarted the computer. At idle it reads in the late 40s. I tried AS5, didn't change much. Would this work?

Yes with a little trimming

I just realized why it wouldn't work. That HSF is made for the wider stance VGA holes, not the narrow ones. The holes would probably need to go right where the copper fines are.

Anyone know of a good alternative? I know about the other Vantec copper HSF, but it looks a bit skimpy.

take the DFI nb hsf off and carefully take the foam pad off it. Scrape off the goop that dfi puts on there and lap that HSF after u unscrew the fan. Thats what I did and with a nice flat mirror finish , my NB temps dropped by at least 7C load . I used AS Ceramique under the HSF before I put it back on. Works great and my NB has never gone above 42 C ever.

So what's the safe temp for the chipset? Mine reaches 51C or 52C sometime, and I wouldn't mind if the safe temp is above 65C.

its best said to keep the NB and PWM temps below 50C. Im more comfortable in the low 40s . 65 is the said max limit but why torture ur hardware. Lapping takes maybe 15 mins at the max and works GREAT. Cheapest solution if u have some 400,600,800,1200 grit paper lying around. Or you can get them at ur local auto store for about 10 bucks or so.

People have been replacing their chipset coolers with this.

How about that, they're the only ones in the wide world who carry it, and it's out of stock.

This should be the same thing, essentially, right?

When I have the girl over I usually turn down the RPM on my fans cause she hates the noise they make. So my NB hits about 70c @ fulload ~63 idle @ 1.66V and it's still rocksolid. Are you sure your NB is the problem for your instability?

I really can't think of anything else.

 Hm, dunno what U guys are doin' - this shot is taken just after a 23min run SP 32M, chipset temp at 35°C. Never got temps above this number.

Stock cooler with AS5 and 2 x 120mm Papst fans blowing to the board....;)

You've got your MOSFETS and stuff actively cooled and your Chipset is watercooled though.

OK, it looks like I got one of those Winchester's with a wierd quirk. 289x9 (2.6GHz even), nomatter what I try, can't run completely stable. It had nothing to do with the NB temp. But 288x9 (2.59) runs perfectly stable. Go fig.
