The first PC my parents ever bought me, when I was 10 or so, was a Franklin Ace 1000, and it was about $5000 cold hard cash at a New Jersey computer show... (and trust me, they couldnt afford it then!)

now, thanks to them, I have a hobby that developed into a career that pays extremely well!

So I think that it's AWESOME that you gave a great system to your 10-yr-old! My kids will have an entire lab at their disposal at birth if I can help it!

now THAT is the type of encouragement I like to see! Maybe my BF2 clan should lower their over-21 age requirement in this case! lol..

And by the time he hits 18, pro-gaming will probably be a very viable career! (i just wish that were already the case in the US damnit! lol)

When I was 10:
JFK was alive and President of the USA
Color TV was still 2-3 years away and a BIG TV was 17 inches!
Cable TV? What was that!
You could let your kids go out on Halloween without walking across the street from them to make sure no scum bothered them!
PC was a expression not even invented yet.
And most of us have more computing power in our own house now than existed in all of the US combined!
Damn, I'm getting old!:(

HAHA... Glad to see that I am not the only father that builds a PC for his son!

Son's rig:
3800+ X2 @ 2.5ghz
ECS nf4 m/b (it really is a pos, but it was part of the Fry's $279 combo deal)
1Gb Geil UltraX (pointless in my Xeon rig @ 200 fsb)
x300SE (just fine for his video needs, no FPS yet)
Dell 2001fp
CoolerMaster Stacker painted to look like Thomas the Tank Engine
Storm watercooled w/ PA120.2

Not too bad for a 2 year old...

Before anyone jumps down my throat, I built it for him because I can

You and me both, m8. When I was 10, Jimi Hendrix released "Hey Joe". Life was pretty good, not a gadget in sight... well, crystal radios? Listen kids, we used to play outside, creating virtual worlds entirely dependent on our imagination. How funky is that then? ;)

Err, yes, very nice rig for a 10 y. o. to have. In the top 2% of gaming rigs, I'd imagine. Considerably quicker than my old rig, in fact.

Nice... Did he build it him self? I remember when I was 10 I built my first setup for around 1500 dollars. Pretty cheap considering we had been spending 3k every other year on a top of the line OEM computer. I had:

abit KT7A RAID
800mhz tbird
GF2 MX
SBL MP3+
plextor 12x CD burner
40gb 2mb cache WD IDE hard drive
cheap enlight case with a generic 300 watt PSU
256mb PC133 SDram stick

MAN! That thing was a beast! Ended up upgrading to a GF3 Ti200 6 months later and started overclocking (just the GPU, CPU didn't come till I was 12 and got watercooling :p: ) and I was able to run sof2 @ 60 fps 1600x1200 max details  Ah the good old days... Then asherons call 2 came... and 256mb ram wasn't enough. Thus starting my need for an xtremely fast PC.

Oh and your son very well could be a pro gamer :woot: Young kids have killer reflexes.

heh his is oced to ddr 500 :) with the fatailty that don't like any type of ram as one user stated..........guess he didnt see that coming(its 100 % stable no crashes in any game played for hours on end not to mention every bench you can dream of stable)........In the right hands the fatality isn't that bad and i took the AN8's where very few could even venture......but its no sapphire grouper or DFI. O im sorry youre machine over mine doesnt mean im highly skilled @ overclocking either ? Look @ my machine back then it was on of the highest overclocked computers back when it was all new.

I didnt say anything about you being lucky, or anything about youre 3dmark scores. Dont all defensive jackass. My 3000 is one of the first true newcasltes back then when they were actually disabled clawhammers, 2.6ghz was insaine back then for a newcastle. Not to mention my 6800GT, which i was one of the first people who wrote the guide's on how to flash and overvolte, unlock youre pipes and other stuff for 6800 series.

Dont judge me over my computer just because i dont have the money anymore to keep up with technoligy.

So before you bash me like you did go shove youre fist up youre mouth and shut up.

Did i mention i was one of the first people to reach 2ghz on the old palaminos using air, i was one of the first people to overclock the 9700pro beyond a 440 core with air cooling. I know what im doing and iv been doing it for over 7 years. Like i said tho i dont have them oney nore the time anymore to buy all new stuff and play these games.

When said nore youre pc isnt as fast as his i thought u were trying to imply youre new pc for youre son the 3700 was as fast as his 3ghz FX-60, since i dont pay attention to 3dmark anymore i never knew you had a 3ghz X2 nre the top score in 06 as i dont really care i thought u were trying to compare youre sons pc against his.

Yeah, how technology has changed. When I was 10, I had a Packard Bell 300 mhz which was used to play Red Alert, and very little Microsoft Word.

I have no idea how much my computer is. Most of it was cheap as hell. I don't find it as a waste at all though.

Dang, if I remember correctly there weren't any computers when I was 10 at least that the average family could buy, when I was 20 my parents bought a 286dx or something like that. That was over $3200.00 back then Packard Hell!!

Need to read the titles better. I thought this thread was about your 10 year old PC being faster than those today. That 's' on the end makes a huge difference.

When I was 10, my father purchased an IBM for $2500. We had nothing but trouble from it, would randomnly turn itself on.

yeah, now I finally got a legit job, but I finally learned the value of money and am afraid to spend any of it. I dream about getting an X2 someday (that might be in 5 months). Right now I deposit all of the 160 buck I earn in a 1) CD account 2)20 bucks for fun

It was an Apple clone to answer your question.
we have a winner! Apple IIc to be exact... my first "upgrade" was to a Franklin Ace 2200 which was AWESOME since it was Apple IIe compatible instead! lol...

Your son has a great rig and I know he loves it.

I am working on getting my graphics card up to 750 or so on the core. I need to up the voltage a tad. Right now 700|850 with the rig in my sig gives me 12,692 in 3dmark05. Not the best score out there and certainly not the worst.

6.2 driver, and card 702|850.

Then Pentium Pro 200 (No MMX) + Matrox Millenium...Then 3Dfx Voodoo 3 :)

Then Ce socket 370 + Titan heatspreader....ATI Rage CG

Then Athlon 2000+ + 512 RAM :) + Matrox G550 (3D stinks !)

YOur child is spoiled rotten.. I had to earn my first computer.. Spent Six months on a paper route to save up enough...

You act like a 10 year old In fact, from short review, i can probably guess 2700 posts are full of crap/lies/childish :banana::banana::banana:

If you feel jealous, don't reply. okay?

You have no idea what i went through to save up. And I'm 99% sure alot of people went through tough regulations to save up at young age. All my classmates were spoilt snobs, i went to a school in a rich area(the school was cheap though) and they had EVERYTHING you could ever want.
How do you think i felt as a migrant with nothing, with rich (i have to add, most of them are very friendly) people around me.

My lunch money went straight into my drawer without letting my parents know. I EARNT another bunch of funds. I saved eventually $700AUD, Invested that in stocks and made another $750AUD(lucky telecommunications boom).

Finally in 2001 i bought an AXP 1600 with a GF2 MX400, 768mb sd 133, 20gb hdd, SB Live. Oh and to cut down further... i used my dads 15" crt from 1997. He replaced his with a 19" flat screen which cost about $500AUD at the time.
before that we had a hand down 386 since 1994, and my dad got his own K6 in 1997

Before you complain, shut your mouth and think about others. Who knows, maybe Chew went through a tough time himself, and doesn't want his son to feel the same way?

Chew, nice of you to make that PC for your son! I'm sure his happy! Certainly beats mine, I'm on a 6200TC!

At 10 I believe I had already gotten my Atari 520ST (hand-me-down from my dad), and a little later I got my first HDD - 20MB!!!

And it's not a bad system, the crash animation in Sublogic's Flight Simulator II was the same breaking windscreen Microsoft still used in FS 95 ... ;)

Oldest computer I've seen working was a Zuse Z3 replica (first built in 1941, replica made after WW2 - the original was destroyed). The demonstration was quite funny, as it calculated 32 + 32 = 65 ... the Siemens technician who maintains it said it was because of the high relative humidity in the museum, the contacts didn't separate properly.

My first PC was a Commedore 64.. lol.. not sure what my age was at the time... around 10 I suppose (but it wasn't purchased new). I even bought this cool piece of hardware for the diskdrive that sandwhiched between a certain IC and had a ribbon cable that ran somewhere else - it let me copy copy-protected games. Renting games and copying them was fun. Then came the evolution of manual-lookups, and code-wheels... nothing the photocopy machine couldn't handle :)

My first IBM type PC was a Tandy 486sx 25mhz... what a waste of money that was. Since then I've always bought my own PC parts and built my own PC's.

Nice rig going to your son. In a few months when I upgrade to AM2 and whatever the high end cards are when it is released, my 4 year old daughter most likely will be getting the lowest of my 5 computers which is:

ASRock Dual SataII
Opteron 144
VisionTek x800
2GB Memory
250 GB HD
16x Dual Layer DVD Burner
FSP 400 Watt PSU

It should be enough to handle her preschool programs.
