I have been wondering how the Cold Bug manifest itself. Is it simply where a processor refuses to work at all below a certain temperature, or does it have a variety of symptoms that can vary from chip to chip.

Reason I ask is that I have an Opteron 170 (0550 VPMW) that will run at 2.8GHz at stock volts (not pushed it any higher yet) using the AMD stock HSF. But when I threw it under the Mach II at the weekend, it refused to run higher than 2.4Ghz and wouldnt let me use the 3x HTT multi or a FSB over about 240MHz. Tried using ram dividers etc but no joy...

Is this basically a version of the Cold Bug which this chip suffers from? If so will I only be ab le to cool it using water or air for overclocking?

Thanks

Jon

you answered your own question. Looks like water or air is your only choice and yes that is the symptoms of cold bug however some are so bad they won't boot at all.

Really bad bugged or very low temp can result in no boot at all. Not able to run high HTT at subzero is another one. If you are lucky you can play with it a little though by controlling the temps. Me opteron 146 for example wil not do over 330 HTT at -25 idle in mbm, raise HTT (or colder temp) wil result in a bsod. If i let it idle around -10 in mbm max HTT is 355.

I'm happy with 330HTT!!
