how fragile is a cpu core on a64

im getting really crappy core temps on my opteron and have been adviced to remove the ihs but im scared about crushing the core i guess i just dont need to tighten the wing nuts very tight but just enough to make contact with the core will i need to insulate the rest of the processor just leavin the core exposed? any help much appriciated

Well you just have to be more carefull, just place some rubber pads next to the core so youre cooling equip doesnt only rest on the core ;)

I covered everything except the core with electrical tape to protect the caps. Then I put dual sided tape on each corner and left the covering on the top of the tape. It kinda looked like an old XP cpu when I was finished.

before you remove the IHS measure how much of the stud is above your knurled nut. I have 15mm with IHS on. I go to 16mm with IHS off- still good contact, but not too much pressure.
