Well my first resonable size cascade is underway, I have 2 2/3hp rotary compressors supplied by Mr Grey Mole and of course a Chilly1 evap for it
At the moment I am pressure testing the first stage overnight

The H/X needs insulating and the box under it just gives it a little height till I insulate it

hehe it's about time Fats ;)
Oh and they're not 2/3HP I'm afraid...They're 3/4HP :D
Should give you some good results, I was almost there with the same deal when I ran out of R23  but hopefully I'll be back into it myself.
Can't wait mate, I've been waiting for another UK cascade to come out :toast:

hey fatty what gases are you planing to run?
TXV on both or captube of 2nd stage?
fatty

Its going to be r507 in the first stage and Co2/r507 in the second the second stage will be captube
I have tested the first stage with r134a and of course I have pics

Yeah these rotary's hold uber vac thats how Grey can run a triple head unit that holds very good temps under load
As for the case its one of the older MM cases I was going to build a water chiller into it to sell off to pay for my cascade but no one showed any interest so I thought hell I'll build my cascade into it
I did polish the case as it was S/H when I bought it but I didn't want to mirror finnish it as it would be too much bling :)

very nice fatty, are you gonna be using a expansion chamber with that flex line, without the braid at static pressure you will exceed the rating its ment to be used at.

Ummmm unsure what its rated at chilly1 sent it to me ages ago it did ok for about 17 bar thats what I was pressure testing it for but I know r23 is like 40 odd bar but then if its only vapour ???

You may want to contact pc ice about non braided cascade flexline. I know he has some that is good for either 500psi or700psi. Sorry I do not know the Bar conversion.

Well first of all, nice one :D
It's great to see you're putting all that stuff to good use mate, hopefully you'll get that gas soon, and we can see some sweet temps.
I don't know about what PC Ice is using, but I've not seen much of non-braided that's rated higher than 10bar working, and about 20 bar burst. That's why we always use braided for cascade. This stuff MIGHT be ok, but it's a risk I don't recommend taking.
And yes, I DO have a braided suction line here if you want it, I'll just get another one from Chilly to replace it so you don't have to wait for one if you'd like.
I really want to see this thing up and running but using non-braided suction is a shortcut I just don't recommend.

I am sorry but I seriously doubt such things can exist with reasonable cost :P
500psi 700psi is what a COPPER tubing is rated for :P When we are talking about flex line... well... highest I've seen rated is for 170PSI without getting obnoxiously thick. Some older stuff used before this 170PSI was rated for 125 or 150 psi. Some specs can be misleading on lot of manufacturer's site as they would list unbraided one first than single braid and double braided one in line corresponding to about 600-700psi, 1500-2000psi.
Yes, it might not burst up under heavy pressure (ok... it didn't burst up at 300psi for 170psi rating when I played with it)... but still it isn't the most comfortable thing when you quite often deal with flammable gas.
Oh fatty, no receiver for the txv?
Gray Mole
02-11-2006, 05:54 AM
Hey Jinu :)
He's got the filter set up in a way that it can double as a reciever. Not ideal, but a pretty common way to deal with that. I've also just sent over a sightglass to stick in there to make the charging easier too.
On my first cascade I used a filter then a small coil of 1/4" to act as the reciever and it was fine, and I'm sure this will work as well once the sightglass is installed so that the charge can be confirmed. I wouldn't want to try to charge a TEV system without a sightglass, can be done I suppose, but much easier with sightglass. on the last one that I ran out of R23 in the process of charging I only used a larger filter and a sightglass and no real problems once it was charged up other than I'd used too small an orifice :p
Whether it's flammable or not, I just don't like the idea of non braided flex in there. Makes me nervous cos it's not only a weak point, but it's a weak point that's right there in the open. At least if it was inside the case you might not get it exploding in your face, but outside it's a ticking bomb waiting to take your eyes out.

1/4 inch copper tubing is rated 500 to 600 working with 2000 psi burst. The Gs flex with brade has simmilar ratings but when you have a stainless gas flex without braid working pressure is from 90 psi to 120 psi. add a braid before running any high pressures.. of keep your static charge under 90 psi...
chilly1
02-11-2006, 07:25 AM
The hose will elongate with out braid hence the low pressure rating with no brain...

Very good point about the possible rupture with highly flamable gas.
AS for the flex line I know he got some new stuff that is much better then the older stuff that is commmonly used. I could be wrong about ratings but it is "rated" very high.

I found a small leak on my evap head after cleaning it up (that will learn me to shave it too fine) so I had to remove and re braze it.
Then I thought what the hey I will stick a sight glass on the first stage and a couple of switches, I still havent decided on a temp display/programmer so switches it is for now makes the cascade a little more user friendly.
At the moment I am vaccing the second stage again then I will charge and retune it
Pics will follow
oh yeah I am hitting around -102 but I need more cooling back to the compressor so more gas or less CO2 its hard to get the right balance

While in the BIOS there is more load on the CPU than during windows idle.
Evap temp is the impt thing to look at, windows temps are useful in ensuring you have a good mount, and seeing the effect of voltage on temps.
Good job on the cascade and 4GHz!

No, the bois is just all out wrong a good 78% of the time, usless for any "real" analysis, it is use full for ruff guestimation but for temp benching not at all practicle, same with windows a third party properly calibrated prob is going to be the only thing that will give you your true temp. This is well knowen in the hard ware field there are meny facters for why it happens as well, predominantly it is due to where they place the thermister and thermal leakage.

Nice cascade mate.
Great case, one thing I hate about the average cascade is the bulky ghetto look, this one is sweeeet

Yeah I just need to get some cash for a froster and some r23 then I may be happy :)
I have used it several times on my fx57 each time same results -85 idle and full load -78 thats evap so I know the unit is stable oh except when the oil sep opens up loool
