View Full Version : AGP Aperture Size?
What is the recommended AGP Aperture Size? I always thought it was 2x the Video Ram.

Me too. but is it talking about actual video ram? Like 8 mb goes to agp. So you'd show 52mb in a Sandra test if you had a 64mb vide card.
Good question though.

I can't remember an exact definition of AGP aperature, but usually the fastest is to set it to 128mb if you have an up to date graphics card. 64mb is faster for GF2s I believe. Trial and error will never hurt though. ;) :)
Cool!
That’s what I have it set to now, but the other day I set it to 256 and ran completely stable. Maybe I should run Sandra or some sort of benchmark to see if there is any gain.

JWS - I would expect 256mb would run just fine, but more isn't always better. ;) For your GF3 ti 200 I think 128mb is optimal, but run 3D Mark 2K1 with the aperature set to 64mb, 128mb and 256mb and see which score is the highest.

I've always found 128mb to be the best setting. :)

128MB here! I've got a GeForce3 Ti200 on an Abit BD7-R, and 128MB seems to work best.

any thoughts on the ti4600. I can't really compare right now cause I'm in the middle of modding my case. Plus I have to reformat and all that jazz.

The AGP aperture rule of thumb revolves more around system RAM than the video card ram and has been defined as:
the lower of 1/2 of system RAM, or 128.

Yes half of system RAM is rule of thumb but , I have heard it both ways . Have heard people having problems with 512 meg physical RAM and Appeture being set at 256 but stable at 128 . I have mine at 128 and it just works out that it is twice my Video and half my Sytem RAM . Hmmmmmm .... LOL .

I think you missed some of my post. It said
"the lower of 1/2 of system RAM, or 128.
If you follow this rule of thumb, problems with 256 aperture settings would be avoided...it would never be set above 128.:)

Yup, and I don't think it makes a difference anymore, 64MB is the most you need right now for any games on the market and most of the latest video cards have that on board, so it really doesn't make a difference (I performed some benchmarking experiements already, no change if it's set to 64MB or 256MB).

The best is 2x the video ram.. and if you have a 128meg vid card and you cant double the size in the bios then just choose the highest option avalible.
