View Full Version : Naked 146 Opteron Bemusement....

This happened to me today...

I decided that my Opteron 146, when clokced to 3ghz was too hot for my likings (46-48 Degrees). So, I decided to take off the IHS and make it naked in the hope that it would reduce the temps. Bear in mind this is my favourite processor, and she will do 3.1ghz on air. So there I as was, razor blade in hand....

Started with the corners, everything was goind well. I know that the sealant is 3-4mm in, so I was being careful. First 3 corners went really well, then on the 4th corner, the blade slipped and went in a bit further that I wanted it too. FLipped the IHS off, and too my horror this had happened: -

Look on the left hand side. See the 4 chips, the 2 bottom ones have been sliced off, and the 3rd from the bottom was hanging off !!! You can imagine how colourful my language became !!! I was very very upset, after all, this is my favourite processor.

I was just about to throw it out when my daughter said, "put it in and see if it works" I told her not to be so fcuking stupid, but I thought "what the hell" and chucked her into my PC (the processor, not my daughter!!!) LOL

Well, imagine my suprise when the PC booted up and has worked fine ever since ! Temps are 10 Degrees lower (which is what I had originally hoped). I thought this could not be right, so while we were out having lunch, I left it priming for 3 hours. No problems priming. Checked CPU-Z and it still shows 1mb Cache and the correct processor ID and speed (running it at 2.9ghz @ default volts). The girls have played HL2 and Age of Empires 3 and the PC is running better than ever.

This has really confused me. After all, the processor has 3 chips missing from it now so how it is still working with no issues ???? Anyone have any ideas ???

LOL, yeah, very lucky !

But...I dont understand how it still works ?

I'm gonna email AMD with some screenshots to see if they can work this out. I'm pretty certain those 3 missing bits must do something....

I don't understand why people keep cutting off those resistors. I've always done a good and clean job (5 cpus so far).

Good it is still working, 10C is what it should be.

My wife was distracting me with her constant concern that I might cut my finger off !!! Bless her. LOL

What is the purpose of the resistors i sliced off ?

I thought they were capacitors, tbh. Final stage of dc smoothing on power. I could be wrong. Get a meter out and see if one side is connected to ground (with the chip plugged in, of course).

Yup capacitor packs. Thats why chip still works...

this seems to be a pretty common mistake and it seems to consistently make very little to no difference

At high clocks and volts it will make a difference. After smashing 3 on my 146, temps sky rocketed on dice with 1.9v+ and it never OCed as well :( It can still do 1.6v 3.2ghz on water though.

haha, you are one lucky man

Yeah, slicing a few of those off doesn't seem to make too much of a difference, at least on air. I wish I had known that when I cut one off of a venice over the summer. Instead of just trying it out to see if it would still work, I supper glued it back on. It didn't work then, but I have a feeling that it might have had I not put the super glue on it. EnJoy has cut one or two of them off of two A64s and they both still work as good as they did before.

Exteremly lucky and a extremely nice chip:D

Oh man, that CPU looks so abused.:(

Very true, 3 off of this current Opty that I just sold. The thing works just as well as before and will prime and game as long as I tell it to at 3ghz. :D

Just for the fun of it, can you see if your multipliers are still locked on this chip?

People just need to be careful. This happens way too often. Unnecessary chances ;)

LOL - Believe me, its the first thing I checked. I even reset my CMOS just to make sure. Tell you what though, she doesnt do 3.1ghz anymore. Tops out @ 3.05ghz now. 3D Benchmaks are slightly up, but I did install newer Nvidia drivers, so I attribute the increase to those. PI is marginally faster aswell. I attribute that to a cooler chip though...

So, to be honest, really not much difference. If it wasnt such a lovely chip, I'd chop another one off !!! :) LOL

Recent IHS removals have been clean for me, on top of past ones like the 2.4C and what not. I never brag though, cause even an experienced cutter can fvck up. :toast:

Glad the cpu is working, but i truely hope you didnt swear at your daughter, or atleast she is older (16 or over)
