View Full Version : Another pump question
Hey! I`m planning to use acetone as a coolant for a low temp (hopefully just above 0, but with the potential to go lower) chiller, but need to know what pumps can handle acetone and low temp liquid.
At the mo I got a Hydor L30II, this any good?
Thanks!

The laing Ecocirc is expensive but it's good. I have a friend that installed one on his dual chiller.
Google for it ;)

Acetone is a solvent that melts most plastics, why would you use that as a coolant? you can get a chemical pump but they are expensive. pick a different coolant.

Yeah, I have to agree with the Walt man. I got some chemical pumps off ebay, but still for a premium.
I'd just pick a glycol based coolant.

What about an Iwaki pump? Overkill?

You can use em, find em on ebay.
They won't come cheap though.
I`m open to changing coolant. Just popped into my head because it can handle low temps :)
Glycol-based coolant you say Stewie? Will have a look :) Thanks for the headsup

I started out with a Hydor 20 and it was a leaking POS. had a lot of water pressure but I gave up just short of epoxy and just bought a D5. If you got a good one it should do what you are wanting.

acetone is harsh on plastic, carefull there
laing ecocirc or the others laing 220v pumps with bronze head are good options

Just start with glycol. If that doesn't do it for you then start fancying it up with other products. Only emperical testing will satisfy the 'will it work' question.
My absolutely crappy ViaAqua2600 managed to pump at -27C glycol coolant (5:4 mix)

Couldn't denatured Alcahol do the same with less potential to eat the pump head up? Just a thought.

I should have mentioned one that wasn't extremely old and probably a pos if the seller was willing to sell a "good" pump for that price.
And just because its Iwaki, doesnt mean its a chemical pump. Aquarium pumps are not chemical pumps.

I've been looking at what pumps some of you guys are running and eheim pumps seem to be rather popular. I emailed eheim the other day and asked them if they recomend low temps...

Dear Phil
Thank you very much for your inquiry by email. All EHEIM pumps can only be used with water (without chemical substances) which have a temperature between 5°C and 35°C.
We are sorry, but we unfortunatly not have a pump in our delivery programm for your project.
If you have further questions please don't hesitate to contact us again.
With best regards

I think their recomended temp range is rather pesimistic.
Has anybody had an eheim crap out on them due to being submerged in -30 antifreeze?

There recommended temperature range will be in keeping with the flowrate charts.
It's not like electronics where you have derating curves.

Mine's not a pos. It's definately newer.
