Just got a pair of L503 Ballistix Tracer's from someone @ anandtech. I think one of the sticks may be bad, but I need further tweaking to verify this (and I will try it in another system)
Could someone be so kind as to tell me what the default settings are for this ram on a DFI Ultra-D (including vdimm)
These sticks like orange slots more right? Or is that purely mobo dependant? What about a good BIOS? I am using 704-2BTA
Typically ram goes in the orange slots, but with that bios you could use the yellow slots.
Stick the chip you think is bad into slot #2, orange slot. Boot the machine and in bios, set it all to auto. Try running memtest on it for a little while.
If it errors out, you could RMA it probably.

I narrowed down the errors to one error in test 4, or one error in test 3, depends on the drive/data strengths. What do errors in test 4 pertain to exactly? Timings or CPU? I know others are instant suggestions to a certain thing.. if you get what I mean lol

Tried 2.6-2.8V
All at 250HTT, CPU at 8x Multi 1.44(real) vcore

3 and 4 seem to mean a cpu issue. either lower the fsb or increase the vcore. here's a guide eva made http://i4memory.com/showthread.php?t=6

If that is the case, and it runs stable on my friends CPU, do I hear X2 or Opty coming my way? :toast:
Edit:
I find it strange that even with just that one stick in, I get errors on test 4, I figured if it was my CPU, it would be when 2x1G was present.. And then changing drive/data helps

Bingo! Did what geto suggested, except I left both sticks in and prayed, lol

Did 3 passes of test 1-4 and one full pass and no errors! Going to do some more testing, bandwidth took a drop though! I wana find out what timing caused this error =0

twr and trtw probably did most of it. you should be able to get the latter down to 3 stable
also, you shouldn't need higher than trc 8

Memtested all last night at the above settings, 14 full passes and 3 passes of Test 4 got ONE single damn error. I changed the drive/data str bumped the voltage from 2.6 to 2.6 .03E and upped my vCore a tad
It is testing right now, hopefully error free when I get back ;)
Next step is to start swapping dimm slots and perhaps a new BIOS, I saw someone recommending 623-3 before for these, is that good?

what is the max volt i can use on this RAM for 24/7 setup i am now at 300mhz with 2,85v do you guys think 2,9 is save dont wanna lose my stick the are 1 day old.
Does burning in these sticks helps??
Save your self time and just rukn #5 in m memtest

Even with errors in Test 4? What if this is my mem controller crapping out, might be why I could never run my EB that high

Just run #5, other tests may pick up cpu instablitiy. Usually if errors are found in test 4 they should be in test 5 as well, with even greater number. I do about 30 to 50 passes of memtest #5 and then get to windows and prime or try something else. That's only when I am playing with cpu or increasing htt

It's weird because I don't get any in test 5, I will try that when I get home though. If it is my CPU it isn't because of the HTT (the cpu can clock to 2.8 prime stable for 24h) so it might be the mem controller or the other hundred variables lol
Edit:
However, if you have a failing module they will usually fail in test 4 no matter what frequency you run them at or at any given clock setting. From http://shsc.info/Memtest86
If that information is accurate, might just be a failing module, which would make sense because that stick alone also produced errors. Still gota check with another machine though

Just got back, 8 full passes of memtest with no errors, thats with all on auto except for 6/3 drive/data and 2.65 vdimm, going to prime while I'm working

Any idea or suggestions on how to get past this block? I am at 275, that screeny has upped MAL and RP, just to see if that helped. I am at 1/6 for drive/data. I can't seem to get stable. After memtesting for 14 hours I got a couple of errors (about 100-200 which all happened in the later passes)
I could try more voltage, but these sticks don't seem to like anything higher than 2.65 :stick:

Just for the record, one stick of Ballistix went tits up, part number CL1115N.2Q 56278.
Started with some reboots that progressively became more frequent. Lately Superpi (even 1M) would fail in seconds at 3-4-4-10 everything else auto 2.8v and frequent rebbots. What is curious is that it would pass memtest for hours without an error even at 275 3-3-3 2.8v. Go figure.

Have you tried another CPU? Just curious, seems weird how memtest can pass flawlessly but be unstable, but it's happened on all my kits before except for my TCCD and now these.
As for my sticks, I though I had 275 stable at 2.75 so I upped it to 277, but was unstable, now 275 is unstable with a crapload of errors in test 3,5,6, and 7. It seems to be my major wall. I did try 2.8v at 275htt (I really want to run it at lower volts) and I got some errors in test 2 off the bat... I'm starting to think my memory controller is poo, but I don't want to upgrade with AM2 coming soon (how soon exactly?)
Could tref be playing a big role in all of this? Right now it is on auto, any ones I should try?
Any suggestions? BTW, Eva if you are reading this, I really like that PCMARK drive/data test you slapped up, its quite nice

More than 2 cpus, I've tried in two different systems with the same results.
It only shows how good memtest as a memory stability test.

TREF can play a big role, auto should set them to 2560, at least that's where mine go. This also happens to NOT be the best setting, try 3864 and if it's still unstable, try all the bottom 8 (1.95us) TREF values.. 1516 or whatever it is all the way down to 4708. (0128 is useless for performance).
Also you are using 6/3 correct? Try 7/3 then move down to 7/2 7/1 5/3 etc.. usually weak values are better for these sticks, but if none of them work try all the normal ones anyway. Drive/data strength does make a huge difference, on my rig 7/3 and 7/2 crash in source rather quickly but 7/1 has been working for 6 hours now.
The difference here in my case is that no matter what drive strength/tref mine will pass spi/memtest etc, only makes a difference in games

lol i remember the good ol days when I was playing with this ram a few short weeks ago.
my advice is the same advice others gave me.
1) Yes, it is fast.
2a) Yes, the settings take forever to perfect
2b) Yes, once you spend hours getting it tuned see (2c)
2c) Yes, it will break
3) Yes, sell it right after you get your new RMA

I'm hoping mine don't die. I am only using them at 2.7v (and refuse to go higher) and they are being cooled by a 92mm atm
I finally got 275 stable I think. I was using 6/3 but changed to 6/1 after errors in test 4, then I did 74 passes of test 4 without an error. I am going to let memtest do some full passes from 10 tonight to 5 tomorrow night, hopefully error free :D CS:S has been running fine too <3

I cannot get these things prime stable, but they memtest for 18+ hours and are 3D fine...
