I've been playing EQ2 and WoW off and on for a couple years now.... been part of pretty much every MMO every made, starting with UO back in 95 or whenever... lookin for something new. The box for Guild Wars caught my eye... is it any good? Seems to get good reviews, what do you guys think of it?
Already downloaded the D&D Online beta.... servers go live Thursday :woot:

I am a big fan of Guild Wars for several reasons.
The game looks great. With better hardware, it just looks better. I've played with both a 5900xt and an X1800XL and it looks and plays great on both.
Free online play. This is a big seller for weekend and occasional players. It's stupid to pay $10-$15 bucks a month for a game you only play a few hours a month at most. Since the missions are yours, and you can finish them when you get good and ready, you can take your time.
No heavy reliance on teaming up immediately. I hate being forced into teaming up with strangers. I'm not a big team player. I'd rather get henchmen and complete missions that way. If I convince my friends and family to get onboard, you can play that way too. Whatever floats your boat.
You want PvP, you got it. Want to make a bot team? You can do that. Want to make a guild of friends and do the team thing? You can do that too.

sounds interesting. Is the leveling system the same as the rest?

level 20 cap until the expansion.
Kill stuff/complete quests to get experience in PVM which levels you and gives you skill points as you go..
Ran it at max settings on my 9700Pro, looked ok although rather blocky (not unexpected for large environment).
Game lacks freedom of movement, gets stale after a while :(

Played it for 2 months before dropping it, sure its free but who cares? Cheapos or people that cant afford it say "MAN ITS FREE!! AND ITS AN MMORPG!!". Well its not an mmorpg to begin with, everyone is seperated in instances that hold about 50 people a piece(maybe more), and 98% of games ever released are free, so whats the big deal?
Graphics are high end, looks pretty. Level cap is reached pretty much instantly, there is leveling afterwards ,ie you accumulate XP, you get more abilities. So people keep mental count of what "level" they are, why isnt this number going beyond 20 has stumped me. There is absolute no control on what you can do. Everything is a loaded instance so your always stuck in a small radius to do stuff. Crafting is all done with crap you collect from your runs, nicest items dont come from crafting though.
PVP is based on a very small circular area, sperated by a 10ft long river crossing through the map.(although a team pvp to compete for a "guild home" is different) What really pissed me off out of this game is that they said this game is all about "skills" not the time you play. This is BS, like any other game ever released, the more you play the better skills and equip you get. There are some level 20's that kill you off in three hits, some of them can take three to four times as many because of their crappy weapons and weak spells. The game is based (just like any rpg) on a rocks paper scissor effect. Ranged beats magic, magic beats melee, melee beats ranged.
I was very psyched about this game during its prerelease, there was so much hailing as "goty" from people that played beta and seen it at E3 that I was prepared to get blown away, but this game was a total waste of money for me IMO.

This game is DEFINITELY skill based...
Play the game, get all the skills, and try just noobing thru a Ranger Trapper team, Condition + Hex degen team, or I-Way Team(if you don't know what these are, then you REALLY didn't play the game). It will NEVER happen! Why? Because you CAN'T win just because you've put years into the game, it all comes down to skill, tactics, and teamwork. Tell me YOU can win just because you've played the game longer than them.....Skill wins, my friend, it's ALL skill.
10 ft PVP? Ever tried GVG or a run at the HOH? There's 6 team battle royals in the HOH man... that's a total of 48 players, in teams of 8, all duking it out to advance to the next round. Tell ME that isn't crazy!
This game is all about skill, just most people don't get deep enough into it to realize it. There's no true over-powering skills, or "best skills", just good skills for the play style you prefer.
Example, Warrior's tactics skills, ripsote and deadly ripsote, you have the choice of a spike dmg hit of 51 or a hit of 23 and they take a degen of 3 for a few seconds due to bleeding. If you prefer to go the Damage over time route, obviously deadly ripsote is your skill of choice between the 2, but it's also nice to be able to just instantly take out the extra damage. The choice is yours.
The game is completely balanced, no class is "the best", and any character class can be built to beat any other.
They've done ALOT of rehauling on this game since it's release, it's MAMMOTH in size(150+ hour campaign).
This is a purchase I will never regret making!

I made it through the campaign in about 60 hours... not even trying (yes, I have done 99% of all quests, multiple times).

My friend let me have his acc since he doesn't play anymore... I'm a level 9 E/N right now, probably a crap class. It's ok but nothing special.

That was my first class "E/N". I think in time you will learn that it is a good combination. I got the game when it first came out and played until I was lvl 11. Then got sick of it and didn't play again till many months later. So after many months of COD later I started playing again. This is when I really discovered this game. When I first got this game I found it to be pretty boring, months later found out it is one of the best games I've ever played. It truly is all about skill, know those skills and you will prevail. Have any of you been to Sorrow's Furnace, UW or FOW. ;)

I have been playing guild wars for months now. I dont play any other online game. Guild wars is free and the expansion comes out next month with new character classes(assassin and ritualist) and new everything. They just added another new area where you can earn more faction to buy skills and runes.

it was a fun game for a short time.
like Omegamerc said.
once ur lvl 20 (wich happens quickly) the pvp side of the game is depressing maybe it wil change who knows.
when the game was in Beta they said that there was no grind in the game and that it was fully skill wich isnt true.
ya there is no lvl grind cause u hit lvl 20 pretty easy when u simply follow the Main quests but after ur 20 all thats left is the weak arena PVP and tobe good in that ul have to go grind mobs.
Cause after ur 20 u only got 3 choices left.
make a new char.
go do pvp (wich i found was dissapointing in alot of ways)
or go down to the underworld or FOW wich was the most fun part tbh.
but like i said after 20 the grind comes.
if you want to keep up with other players you will have to go out and grind mobs for drops that are worth something and for runes.
yeah part of it is skill based but beyond lvl 20 if you dont waste alot fo time grinding mobs for runes you ull b alot weaker then people that do even though skill lvl is the same.
so in the end its exactly like alot of other RPGs.
you are grinding mobs to have a better char.
best way to play this game is with friends i guess and a huge perk is that its free but in return it has alot of downside compaired to other MMORPGS.

I know UW and FoW very well, ESPECIALLY UW. My guild does spider runs constantly, all 40 members of the guild have a spider for their ranger, and our I-Way team all have spiders as well...
As for beyond lvl 20, even when you hit lvl 20 you still don't have half the skills in the game yet, then there's elite skills which require capping the skills from specific bosses. There's ALOT still to do when you hit lvl 20, not just grinding enemies for items.
Also, to those who say PVP is weak, get a group of 8 and try the HOH, watch the amount of finesse and skill that comes into how quickly and efficiently you get owned... Then tell me it's weak.

Well said Diltech....I've found there is alot still to do after lvl20. HOH gets kinda old cause everybody plays Iway. It's like if you if you don't want to play Iway then you get stuck with the noobs. Which is ok but you get owned so fast its not worth the time getting a group together. I also play a Ele trapper....I find it to be way better then my lvl20 ranger with a spider, not that a spider matters in a UW run but hey got to say I have it. ;) It's been awhile since i've really played it, after you complete 3 characters it does get abit repetative but even with my first character I know there are tons of side quests to do. One of these days I will get my FOW armor, lol.

You know, it's easy to maul an I-Way team...
Necro/Mesmer - Spiteful Spirit + Sympathetic Visage, since they stay in a group it'll kill their WHOLE TEAM and they'll never have enough adrenaline or energy to do a single skill...
I-Way gets owned realllllllllly quickly!

What is I-way? Is that a PvP thing?
I like this game because I can pop in after work or on the weekend and knock out a mission. Without becoming so sucked into the grind that it becomes tedious like work.
People that played 8 hours a day, raced to the highest level possible, and were trolling message boards for the unstoppable combo of skills for their build are seeming to be the majority that hate on the game.
Discussions about this game remind me of the Capcom Marvel Super Heroes discussions. People would play it like it was a super combo fest and declare it stupid or boring. The people that spent all their time looking at combo faqs and trying to do infinite combos ground all the fun out of it.

I played this game like crazy for 6 months, then I dropped it, but not because I got tired or bored, it was bcos I bought a 939 and started playing the OC game LOL. Now they're releasing the Factions I will play again.
As most of the ones that really played the game said, lvl20 cap is not bad, its the best idea Anet brought to the game. You can't have a godly uber 10000hitpointsperhit char. You stop at lvl20, plus 2 15 attribute quest. From there you've got to collect the elite and higher skills. The main point nobody said is: You only can "wear" 8 skills at a time. What does that mean? You can have a char with all the skills (you can change secondary profession), but you can only have 8 of those skills when playing. That balances the game A    ing lot :D
I have to agree, after 4hours/day 6months playing it got a bit boring. That with the IWAY HoH saturation made me leave. But I paid 45€ for it, and played for about 350h with all my chars. Tell me another game that gives you that €/h rate :D

iway is the warrior skill "i will avenge you"
mursaat
03-15-2006, 12:52 AM
Yes if you want to get a bit deeper, an IWAY team is full of Warrior/Rangers with pets. They get their 8 pets killed, then they use the IWAY skill on the dead pets. That makes an insane amount of pain to kill the other team.

Spiteful Spirit will kill an iway team in less than 4 seconds ;D
So will the spirit shackle/mind wrack combo.
Monks got a few skills that'll make their WHOLE team useless in a single cast as well.
