The problem is that my XP takes a while before it stars up...
to be more specifically the
"Starting up windows..." scree (blue welcome screen) takes too long
it just stays there with no hdd activity...
it wasn't like this a few days ago... any suggestions?

X2 3800+ @2.4Ghz
1024 Corsair 3200C2PRO
Western Digital 160Gb SATA 2 drive
thanks in advance

PS: my start-up programs are minima (sygate and rivatuner), services are also kinda minimal...

no sure if this helps but there are some reg tweaks that help me....

Automatically Kill Programs At Shutdown

don’t you hate it when, while trying to shut down, you get message boxes telling you that a program is still running? Making it so that Windows automatically kills applications running is a snap. Simply navigate to the HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop directory in the Registry, then alter the key AutoEndTasks to the value 1.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\

Once there, find the value HungAppTimeout and make sure it is set to 5000 (that's the default). Now, in the same folder, look for the value WaitToKillAppTimeout. Set this to 4000 (the default is 20000). (i set to 100)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\

and change the value WaitToKillServiceTimeout to 4000 ( i set to 100) as well. Another thing that helps speeding up shutting down is going to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services and then setting the NVidia Driver Help service to Manual.

Microsoft Bootvis always reduces my boot times to minimum.

I've had much the same problem recently. I've been thinking about a reformat, since it didn't do that at first.

Do you have nVidia IDE drivers installed? Check the Event Viewer and see if you get a warning # 51.

download tuneXP always speed up boot times for me. Also limit the amount of items you have starting at startup. Scan for viruses and spyware, which also slow your boot, and finally defrag, that helps too
