Should I buy the new 150gig Raptor ,,,, to go with my Opt 170 rig

trying to decide if I should get the new 150gig raptor ,,, 16 mb cache,, 10k rpm,, SATA of course,,,

currently im running a Seagate 300 gig IDE drive,, its nothing special but it gets me by,,,

I had wanted to put my OS and Games on one drive and just keep the 300 gig for storage but im not sure if its worth spending the $300 on the raptor or just getting a $80 normall SATA drive for all my OS and Games,,,,

--> I mean what else would I upgrade at this time from my sig unless I was selling my opt170 and adding the $300 to get a better chip,,,,,

any advice on if performance of the raptor is worth it would be great,,,

a 2.6ghz 2x1mb daul core is plenty of CPU for most anyone.

Well before you do consider this. Dual 74gb raptors will be faster (raid 0) and have the same capacity. Will be a better buy. and for what its worth, my 36g b raptors have been the best upgrade Ive done in a long while.. much better than a 4-500mhz OC or faster RAM.

I was considering that also just getting two 74gigs,,, the price is really cheap newegg has the 74gig for $135 after rebate.... to be honest I never setup raid before,,, im guessing it isnt to difficult,,,

If you have the money then 2x 150gig raptors in raid would be very nice !

If not then IMO 2x74gig raptors in raid would be my 1st choice unless you didn't want to run raid 0 for reliability reasons then the 150gig would be my first choice as a stand alone drive.

I know if one of my 74gig raptors go down then I would have to start fresh, and send in for RMA cant recover data,, but atleast it would only be the OS and games and they do have 5 year warranty,,,, hmm wish I had money for dual 150gig but i dont,,,,

I am going to have the 300 gig for all my other backup data and normal work files,,, is raid 0 really that risky?

The RAID on Nf4 is a pain in the ass, but if you know what to do its very simple. Its just knowing that the most sensible way of going about things is absoutley wrong.

I'd put my data on the 300gig and run 2x74gig in raid 0 with your OS

Go for the raptor3's ;) They're sick drives......I'm working on getting a pair of limited edition ones with GLASS TOPS :eek: They're gonna be awesome running in raid on my promise pcie sata2 controller :cool:

Raiding the drives does next to nothing in regular desktop usage (unless you videoedit, etc).

Might be good to get one of the new "updated" 74GB Raptors and keep the IDE for storage :)

so you would recomend getting a 74gig raptor and just running it normal SATA,,, no raid? even for game play your saying no real difference?

If im gonna go single drive why not go for the 150 gig new raptor with 16mb cache,,,,

Personally I'd go 2 x 74gb Raptors (Raid0) over 1 x 150gb Raptor... if performance and price are what you're after.

Like many others here, I'm very happy with my 2 x 74 Raptors (Raid0), one of the best buys to date :)

The one 150 gig drive is superior IMO to 2 x 74 gig raptors in raid 0, it will actualy be faster at some things, such as seek times than a raid-0 setup. Although of course loading contigious files will be faster on the 2 drives in raid-0.

I would get the 150 gig so you have more room to upgrade later. Plus it's one less drive and also less risky than Riad-0.

I'm definately a raid fan, but I have found some of it's shortcomings. If I was going to do Riad-0 it would be on a seperate raid controller, not the one built into the MB...Which adds more to the cost of the setup.

If you raid off the MB, there is a good chance you will have to re-stripe the drives later if you upgrade the Mb, of course if your data is on the other drive anyways, its not that much of an issue.

Burst rates mean next to nothing in terms of real-world performance ;) What's more important is the read speed and access times. These are my 2x160gb WD Raid Edition Sata2 drives (my drives are on the right..lol):

Not knocking your choice whatsoever :toast: Like I said, the Hitachi's are great performers, especially considering their price.....
