View Full Version : Computer Crashes under typing.

ive been able to duplicate this problem several times now, my pc can run dual prime for several hours with superpi 32m running in the background. But start heavy typing and one of three thing will happen. Either one of the primes fail, the computer screen goes blank, or i get a lockup and ati vpu recover activates.
So far this has happened with internet explorer and MS Word 2003.
MY hardware is:
ASRock939 Dual SATA2
X2 3800+ CCBWE
2x1GB G.Skill ZX
Connect 3D X800GTO 16p modded.
my settigns are as follows:
250x10 1.4v 3-3-2-5 1t 1:1, other timings are left on auto for now. 3x htt multi.
The x800gto is running stock freq although its on techpowerup's 16pipe bios.. which worked.
The card can play DOD:S or BF2 for hours under heavy overclocks.
Does anyone have an idea of whats going on? I thought it may be a USB problem so i switched to a PS2 keyboard and i still get the same issue...
my last idea is trying to uninstall the keyboard drivers...
could my rather modest overclock be interfering with things this badly?

its posible an overclock could cause this, just unlikely...make sure you have pluged all the power connectors into the motherbord...mines a DFI like, but i had missed the floppy power conector it needed, and whenever i typed...tried to fold, or do anything strenious, it crashed or BSOD'd so look for that first...if not, then stock speed it all...and try that
Computer Crashes under typing.
Then don't type, man :)

Try ps2 if you are using usb, try usb if you are using ps2. Keep usb for the mouse since it's better (higher refresh rate).
My P4P800-SE which I thought to be dead only boots with the mouse and keybord in usb slots but not when I connect them to the ps2 ports. Computers just suck when it comes to compatibility.

Yesterday I posted a new thread asking for help pertaining to my friends computer, where it out of the blue started locking durring post check, after cpu detection, but locking before ram detection. Over the phone I asked him to test the ram, swap it out with his other pair, ram was fine. I was thinking maybe it was the on-die mem controller, and asked for advice. A couple people responded saying they thought it was the motherboard. I travelled many hours late last night to my friends house only to discover that it was the keyboard. Brand new USB keyboard too!. Plugged in a PS2 keyboard and everything lit back up normally. We were very close to spending $250 on a brand new A8N32-SLI at Fry's.
I know it sounds unlikely, but maybe try a different keyboard. If using a USB one, try one that is PS2, and see if the same issues are duplicated. Good luck :)

ok well i primed ALL night long... and i reinstalled the cat 5.13 drivers this time without control center, and i installed an older version of intellitype.
keyboard is a usb one but came with a ps2 converter, problem occurs with both.
anywho, that problem seems to be fixed, but now my internet is droppeng every minute or two, just enough to kick me from BF2, it may be the cable provider though so im going to check on that.
this is what i get for buying a budget mobo.
edit 1 - another thing i did, i installed a new version of ati tool, and i havent opened it yet, so its possible that ati tool is doing it too, ill check on it..
edit 2 - well just happened while gaming... i never tested this ram for 3d stability so maybe the 2x1gb is puttign too much stress on the mem controller, clocking it down to 200mhz and changing the tweaker settigns to what g.skill recommends... we'll see.

Ok so its the ram. itll prime all night at 250... but after 20 min of gaming or heavy typeing i get a crash.
ram at stock steeing (166 divider 210mhz) im fine in all situations.
makes me feel better because i was beggining to think my GTO was bad..
so im playing with a64 tweaker now... im wondering what i can use to help me out... like will skew help me with 2x1gb? i guess ive got alot of problems to work out.
my biggest problems are no clock gen for this ASROCK Uli chipset, and then i cant change any memory settings in bios, and A64 tweaker wont save settings correctly so i got to set them manually every time i boot....
im learning alot on my first A64 adventure lol...

here are my tweaker settings at 250... these settings are stable 32m at 260, but i can only run 3d at them for maybe 10 minutes or so...
anything i should try to boost performance?
Im thinking a higher max async latency might help... am i right?

nope in the first post it says im using G.skill ZX which is BE-5 if im not mistaken.
and htt multi is at 3x not sure why auto would change a thing.

these settings got me 2 hours in BF2 before lockup, anyone care to comment?
5.5ns read preamble maybe?

Try Idle Cycle 16, uninstall your USB drivers and let windows redetect them. You could also try seeing if your mobo has the USB jumper set to 5vsb which could be pulling too much from your psu. Just some things to try.
Enable idle cycle counter in bios.
Tref of 100 1.95us? Can you try others? even default one of 200 3.95us is better for me on this board.
Many people are having similar problems with stability with medium memory clocks on this board, most resort to 2T.
Revv23
01-11-2006, 08:43 PM
ill try 200...
2t isnt for me...
i was messing around and tref 100 makes no difference... so ill go tref 200 3.95.. im assuming higher the # the slower you go right?
idle cycle 16? this is default for the board... i was under the impression 256 was slower then 16... as 256 is what people use for high density ram... hmm testing... lol.

It is an application Error not a Hardware Fault.. Use Knoppix and try typing using it.. if it Crashes your hardware is really :banana::banana::banana:ed up.. If not I am right and it is just a software Fault
CRUSH-ER

Yep, 256 is slower. And what psu do you have? Seems like maybe the power draw is causing something to falter when everything's blaring.

i think you are right... i just tried in notepad, no problems... i stress tested all day and had no issues...
so then i open up word, type 3 words, and bam, BSOD.
so i reinstall, same problem... even at less then stock settings.
this is really wierd, ive never had an issue with this copy of word over serveral different computers.. its 2003 PRO.

i dont want open office... sure ill use it for now, but i want it fixed, not worked around.
i paid alot of money for MS office pro after using open office, mainly because open office feels alot like word 95 to me. i want it to work, and while i respect open office for what its doing, it just isnt up to par yet.

Do you have to run super pi in the background with dual primes? Isn't that a tad excessive? I always go by the rule of law that Prime and or Super Pi should be run one at a time by themselves. Maybe that's just me.

If you read Polygon's take over at Rebels haven, you'll see this board only likes TCCD on 2t.
If you read Polygon's take over at Rebels haven, you'll see this board only likes TCCD on 2t.
It's not TCCD.
In general this board alround sucks for mem ocing. Even with BH-5 or whatever.
I suspect vtt fluctuations.
Infact i get random BSOD with this board as well. But i haven't noticed what i was doing while it happened. One thing i noticed was whenever i replug my Logitech MOMO wheel (the pedals stuff up, and sometimes total recalibration is needed), it would BSOD.
I reinstalled windows the other day, still happens every now and then.

if you read my take here, you would see that i have BE-5. NOT TCCD!
not to be an ass, but you are the second person to try and tell me something like this, tis not that hard to read.
crusher its a powerstream 520w SLI.
i dunno NN this is a brand new keyboard maybe it just doesnt play ice with my mobo and word... its worth a shot, this is a fresh install of windows...
one thing ive noticed, when plugged into the usb port the digital media pro drivers are installed, when plugged into a ps2 port, it installed some logitech drivers, it failed with both so im not that concerned... but ive changed it to the generic MS driver now, and im going to see if she still crashes.

hey thats a good idea, my school install a whole bunch of CRAP on my PC before it aloows me on the network, slowed my boot by like 30 seconds...
F6 is it? Ill try it now...
Great idea thanks.

Loading diagnostic mode will take awhile to load windows though, so be warned. Go to start, run, type msconfig, then select load diagnostic. If you want to go back to normal, just re enter windows and select normal startup. Safe mode is entered by hitting f8 before loading xp. I'd try diagnostic mode first though.

diagnostic mode still crashed..
safe mode however, worked just dandy...
so hmm, that leaves me with what? my video card driver? im going to write down the BSOD error #... problem is, sometimes i dont get it and many times its different...
*sigh*

Hmm....seems my idea was correct in the fact that it's a driver. Seems it's a system driver or video problem driver. What system drivers are you using? And what display driver? Try experimenting with them.

nope uninstalled ccc at first sight of this problem..
anyways, going through my drviers i realized that my agp drivers were still installedd (this is a pce-e and agp mobo) i didnt think that would be an issue, but just to be safe, i uninstalled those as well as my ATI drivers... everything is working fine now...
hopefully when i reinstall the CATs this will be a non issue.
Thanks for all of your help crusher i was about ready to give up on this.

Granted you don't want to run 2T have you at leased tried it??
I read through the whole thread again and you didn't say you did.
Would be good if you could try it to at leased rule that out.
Also some known problems with the Uli USB drivers, if you have those installed uninstall them,
you can just uninstall them from add-remove

and BTW tried the 5.12 and it still happened... but going without a video driver and i have no issues at all.
