View Full Version : Which dual core?! AMD X2 or Opteron?!

im building a high performance SLI computer.

i want dual core, and im gettin the DFI SLI-DR expert, so i may overclock.

if i decide to get the AMD X2 4400+ with 2 MB cache (same as opteron), will i get the same performance as the Opteron 175 (same specs i think). and will i be able to overclock the X2 the same as the opteron?

PS im going to order parts towards the end of this month and i there are no opteron dual cores to be seen. but there are plenty of X2's.

which one is more suitable option.

can i overclock the X2 just as good. what is the difference.

The only difference between an Opteron and an X2 is the stock voltage. I would like to say that the Opterons OC better, but I can't really say that for sure because it seems like a lot of people have been underimpressed with certain opteron steppings. That being said, I have a 170 that does 2.6ghz on 1.35v. Unless you can get your hands on a good stepping I would say you should probably get what ever is available/cheap.

opteron because of price

OC's as well if not better

My 165 will do 2950 windows stable but temps are too high
I use 2835 24/7 but my results are not typical

Get the FX60 if you want the best dual core.

Why is it best? Because it costs over $1200 USD? Best is a very relative term. I would say the best dual core would be the one you buy for less than half or a third the cost, then overclock it to the same speed or at least have fun trying.:)

obviously hes not talking about price and yes a fx-60 stock is faster and will generally go faster then any other dual core, so yes it is the best!

Are memcontrollers equal?

I dunno, maybe 939 Opterons can manage some extra kind of memory (like ECC), but I'm not 100% sure about that.

I wanted to ask if opteron memcontrollers overclock as well as X2's controllers.
I'm not that much in the hole opteron story but I remember someone said that memcontrollers in single core opterons where quite bad for extreme stuff

Opty, in my experience with both.

at least attempt to stick to the topic.

So generally, opterons are better. thats great. now where the hell am i going to be able to find one. and which opteron should i get?

you also have an ABSOLUTELY AMAZING chip. like, dumbfounded amazing. I barely get 2700 with my ccbwe 0530 tpmw 170 at 1.5v. and you get 2700 with your 165 at stock volts. did you burn in your processor a lot? if so, it seems it worked. any tips? :p

EDIT: oh yeah back on topic, id go with opteron, lower vcore, higher oc potential. id go with a 165, most are getting around 2600/2700 max, which is good enough for almost anyone

yes but they are nowhere to be found. ive checked every UK site and IF they have Opteron's they are all out of stock. so what the hell am i gunna do?! i start buyin parts the very start of February.

cant find a place that ships to uk from us? or is that for some reason bad... ive never understood that

adam02

well yea it is quite bad. reasons being.

i would have to pay TAX for importing. And huge shipping amounts.

if u can find them in stock that will ship to UK then post links please.

in the end, if you CANNOT find a place that'll ship to the uk at a reasonable price, x2's are still amazing chips, and they still overclock very well. I know youre not looking at a 3800, but the newer (or from what i have seen lately) 3800 chips are doing MUCH better than opterons, i.e. 2.8-3.0ghz. no clue about 4400's though

thanks! thats what i needed to hear. my friend has one and he's hittin 3400 on his 4400 X2. he says he jumped on the Opteron Dual core band wagon and found the X2 better. he works in a local comp store so i think he knows what hes on about.

Is the DFI Lanparty UT SLI-DR expert a decent option?

terrordemon

wait wait wait.... 3400 on a 4400?! thats almost fx60 phase change speeds!!! i cant really believe that though, i mean its just unrealistic. 2700/2900 on water is i think pretty good, but 3400 is just unheard of.

but yeah, sli-dr expert isnt a bad option, but personally i find it unnecessary. Go with the non-expert version or get the ultra-D and mod it to sli, thats what i would do

and if your friend seriously has his 4400 at 3400, PLEASE tell him to take screenshots and validate cpu-z, i think i speak for everyone here saying that we would like to see that, and the stepping of the chip

Wait for the batch with upgraded soi ...should take overclocking opterons back to a good level.

Upgraded soi? How to find out?

ok, hes an micro-electronic technician and he's been working on computers practically all his life. il see if i can get him to take screenshots etc.
he has some weird thing in his computer. it makes frost appear on his mobo :S
says he gets his CPU to like -60oC or something like that.

can i still mod an ULTRA-D or have they caught on and stopped ppl from modding. either way i could always get the SLI-D for like £10 extra without the hassle. or is the regular SLI-DR good. cos i like the idea of Ultra violet reactive hardwear. anyway which mobo should i get. is SLI necessary. cos i wanted an SLI mobo because i liked the idea of having the available option for SLI in the future.

yeah... see -60 isnt water, thats phase change, and even then its still impressive

i have modded 2 or 3 boards with the epoxy. just scrape it off with an xacto knife. you will be suprised how little you have to remove. as soon as both contacts are shiny, use solder or rear window defroster paint or conductive pen. i never used a pencil, so i dont know how/if this works. i use the paint, much cheaper than the conductive pen and less permanent than solder.

very truly yours,
