Hi folks. My friend called, and his comp is no longer making it through post check. Specifically, it appears to lock up after cpu detection and before ram detection. I helped him build this system aprox. 11 mo's ago.

Specs:
AMD Athlon 64 3000 (Winchester)
MSI NF4-SLI Platinum (MS7100)
2 x Leadtek 6800NU
2 x WD Raptors
2 x 512 Patriot +XBLK (TCCD)
250HT x9 multi = 2250mhz, 1:1, (I don't remember what the voltages were at).

I told him to try swapping out ram with his G.Skill in his other comp, try 1 stick at a time, try different slots. He cleared CMOS also, but system locks before he can enter BIOS. Nothing has worked so far.

In my group of friends, he is the only one with a 939 AMD chip, so unfortunately swapping processors out or mainbaords, isn't an option available. I've been reading here a long time, and I spend an hour or 2 per day. My guess is that the memory controller on his winnie is fried. I'm heading out soon to go take a look personally.

I'd be very greatful for any advice, or wether you think that the issue is the cpu or not. Thank you.

Well, if it gets past the CPU-check then the CPU is fine. THe problem is probably the ram. You should swap out the ram with im and see if that fixes it.

Thx for the reply. As stated above, we did try swapping out the ram, but no luck. That's why I was thinking the mem controller on the cpu maybe?

Any ideas or info are apreciated, thx.

It could possibly be a motherboard issue, yes.

A few months ago my machine stopped booting in dual channel. Naturally I thought it was the RAM, so I tried three different sets and still nothing. This led me to believe that it was the memory controller, but upon trying the chip in a friend of mine's board it was fine in dual channel.

It turned out that all but 1 of the DIMM slots had died for no apparent reason.
