:worship: Yesterday has been a bad day - killed my Opteron 146. Tried to remove the IHS and all went fine but then I scratched into the PCB one time.
Seems like I cut somthin' important - no power to the RAM and no signal to the start knob.
Worst thing is I have no screenie - it ran 3.2 GHz on water with 1.552 Vcore at 33°C IDLE and 50°C LOAD primestable - not maxed out !!!
Just wanted to decrease the temps a bit to push the baby further.
What a loss...........
Was a CABYE 0540 FPBW........., now I feel like I should do some :bsod: :bsod: :bsod:
So I have to use my 148 now again.

Ya know what's funny? I removed IHS on my first venice and knocked off two reistor packs and it's still running fine months later. My second venice, I was more careful and didn't screw up. My latest attempt was on the Opty 148 I'm running now, and I removed 4...yes 4! resistor packs and it's totally prime stable at the speeds in my sig. So go figure.

I feel sorry for so aprecciated loss. Some of us can understand that frustation because we lived it...
I did the same damn thing with my Opty 175...someone suggested using a conductive pen on the spot where you cut. It didn't work for me but it might work for you!

Yeeeeeeeeikes... guys, check this out:
"Ok guys... I got something major to report. If you soak your CPU in a product called Solvoplast (used to remove bandaids and other adheasives) you will be able to remove the IHS in under 10 seconds with a good razor and drastically reduce your chances of damaging your CPU."

post: #20
I think this method should be used more.. perhaps there's another solvent which could be used? The solvent used in Arctic Clean's two part process might be something to consider? Not sure... I heard Solvoplast was not always easy to get... ymmv. anyways, seems like a much better way to ensure we get the IHS off without damage..

LOL - Here here
Sorry for your loss HCC, bet that feels like a good strong kick in the balls....
I'm very interested in the idea of soaking the whole thing in some kind of solvent....could there be any risk to the package (eg. the solvent eating it) ?

Just removed mine today. Went well! I recommend doing it if you have the patience, experience, and some more patience. A shaky hand will kill these things FAST! Try to be as calm as possible and it should go well. And definitely have the thinnest razor possible. Sorry to hear about your cpu. :(
http://www.scissorworld.com/HairRazorsShapersAndBlades/3401DoubleEdgeReplacementRazorBlade.gif
That's the "type" (not exact kind) of razor blade I've used now. Work great, thin as hell.....sorta bendy though, so be sure to wrap some electrical tape on the one end of the sharp blade to give it some weight (and protect your finger).

i lost my cabye0543 148 removing the IHS about 2 weeks ago.....just slipped toward the end and sliced 2 caps
felt like such a douchebag coz i'd previously removed 2 about an hour earlier no problem and left this one till last.
BUT :) it gave me an excuse to put my x2 3800 under the Vapo LS and it turns out i'm getting much more FPS now anyway thru the latest drivers.....godamn these dual cores put out some heat under single phase though.

I think those blades are just to thick. I´m the worst guy in manual arts, in fact the Ministry of Overclocking Arts explicitly denies me the power to voltmod anything that plugs to an outlet in earth (unless you can use as much lead as the size of an Oreo cookie).
Even though my hands suck, I could take the IHS off my now dead (because of other causes) Venice 3200+.

yes - I think using the thinnest razer possible is best... I had popped my ihs days before this thread started, using a carpet cutting blade... it worked, but I think would have been easier with a regular razer, then easier again with that plastic handle for it. :)

I think I killed my opteron 146 after removing IHS.
It didn't get loose first so i cutted and cutted and i was sure i was true everything till it hits me. The thermal paste is holding the IHS and I heated it up with a hairdryer and it came loose.
But I cutted the PCB in 3 places just because the IHS wouldn't come loose and I think its dead know but i still need to check tomorrow.
wish me luck.

:D O.K. - :banana::banana::banana::banana:ing story part 2:
After a hard, long search I found a chip with the same stepping - CABYE 0540 FPBW.
Bought it for an almost horrible price. Removed the IHS successfully this time, used a ceran field cleaner with a fresh razorblade inside.
And the point of the story? I won 5°C but that damned chip won't do more than 3.050 MHZ - no matter what I try.
This must be the different betwen bad luck and worse luck...........
