View Full Version : How hot does your GPU really get...??

I've always used Everest to monitor my temps.. I think it's a great tool.
CPU monitoring was always easy.. run dual Prime and observe the temps.
With GPU monitoring it's always been more difficult... I used to run the artifact scanner within ATITools and observed the temps.... ran 3DM05 and quickly looked at the temps while the screen changed..
Suddenly I realized the Everest can create log files.. so I enabled those and went playing for almost 2 hours..
With the "old" method my temps were 70-71C max.. playing a game with all settings to it's max gave me a max temp of 79C...!
So for me running 3DMark and ATITools is history.... in game temp logging is how it should be done...

yup, I do it with rivatuner ^_^

all of which are highly inaccurate.
want "real" temps use a probe.

Actually Rivatuner is pretty dam good.

gpu's can get hot, 79° isn't a problem but maybe look if your cooler is making good contact with the core.
specs please, without it this thread is useless:)

Specs are in my sig.... cooling is a Zalman vf700 LED... and yes it's seated correctly... :)

You need better airflow around the card in general.

I use atitools or Rivatuner (best for long time monitoring)
Never go up 50° :D

I have a 92mm fan sitting on the bottom of my case pulling air out the back. It sits right below my x800xl. In ATI tool I get temps of close to 90C. Should I try blowing this fan the other way? I will be modding my stock AMD heatsink to it soon, should I have the fan sucking or blowing on the heatsink and sucking or blowing on the exhaust?[/endhijack]

Well it is, unless your a temp freak, who goes crazy, "cause o no's my GPU is at 60C", must get a better cooler.
A temp prob is pretty much a waste of time when rivatuner is within 5c at least.

do you think your cpu temp probe is within 5c when it reads 30c loaded and is an X2 at 2800mhz 1.6v with room ambient of 25c?
I dont trust a single sensor. In fact, if the card is too hot for me to hold a finger to the ram or the back of the core, its running TOO HOT.
Let me put it this way: many wont let their cpu's run above 55c loaded, so why let your video card?

probes aren't that accurate, also you can only measure one temp of the core. look at thermal temp readouts of cpu's(often pics like that in anand type reviews of new chips, there was one on the new sparc chip i think) and you will see different parts of the core are different temps so you will never know the real temps. just a semi accurate idea of what temps might be, thats as good as it gets.

Thats like comparing Intel and AMD.

A (AMD) CPU can't run as hot as a GPU....

ATItool kan create logfiles as well .. take a look under Temperature monitoring :)

how can rivatuner be good???
rivatuner only tells you what the sensor is telling it
all onboard sensors are crappy, voltage and temp..
if you want real readings, use probes and DMM's
i tend not to bother with temp probes but I always use DMM's..
NightCrawler™

True.. they all suck... but untill I get a decent fan controller with temp probes this will have to do for now...
O/T Can these probes be placed between the processor and the heatsink or will it screw up the contact...???

between cpu and heatsink for sure no . As close as you can from cpu core. for your X2 i think glued on the face of the IHS.
NightCrawler™
01-09-2006, 09:46 AM
As long as it's not inbetween the IHS and the HSF... if it's small enough maybe on the side of the IHS...?

LOL Well I'm not going to have my 4400x2 run @ 80C and think I can get away with it.. whereas my 7800GTX still runs smooth at those temps...

36c idle, 40c when playing BF2 if I don't turn my fans up. The card had some major problems about a year ago that I managed to recover from, but now if the temp hits 41.5c - 42c my machine reboots.

It's not nearly enough. My 256MB GTXes run around 60C with the stock cooler. I don't think adding another 256MB of memory is enough to overwhelm the Zalman.

I've got a 120mm fan blowing cold air inside the case @ full speed.. It has it's effect on all components... but my GTX still runs @ 80C
No matter where I place additional fans.. it keeps running hot. I've reseated the HSF twice and the results are a 100% copy of the previous mounts..
Maybe I just have a very hot GPU...:slapass:
