View Full Version : Quick questions about gear

I recently purchased the waterchiller i_jester built, and will accordingly be needing to pick up some water cooling gear in the near future. The liquid temps may be as low as -27C in the reservoir (though I don't have it yet so can't say for sure). I will primarily be cooling my DC Opteron, and may likely later add on my 7800GT. My other components are listed in my sig.
My questions:
1) Is the Storm block a bad choice for chilled water?
2) How 'bout a D5 pump? Or will it have trouble with low temps?
3) Am I correct in assuming a 3L reservoir will not require the use of a radiator? If a rad is needed, would a PA120.2 be OK?
4) Water/Alcohol? Antifreeze/Water? Johhny Walker Blue?
Thanks in advance for any input.

Myself and others use the swiftech 6000 blocks

as far as pumps I'm using a submersable beckett versa gold pond pump
Resvoirs well, size varys greatly from unit to unit I'm going to use 2 gallon res.
cooling liquids also vary quite a bit, Denatured alcahol, winshield washer fluid
glycol based coolant. I will be using denatured alcahol & Glycol base coolant mix 70 - 30 mix
As far as radiators I have not seen anyone using radiators with chiller units.

1) I'm not familiar with the gear you talk of but any waterblock will do. It is only a matter of ease of insulation.
2) My cheap pump doesn't flow well at -27C but flowrate doesn't matter that much.
3) Not sure what you mean. The chiller is a complete system, just plumb in your CPU loop and away you go. But do you mean you are watercooling other parts aswell as the chilled CPU?
4) Antifreeze/water. It's cheaper than Johnny Walker Blue but less flammable.

1) storm would work, but would probably be difficult to insulate and the jets could easily clog with any detritus.
2) D5 should work.
3) you won't need a rad. a rad would be counterproductive.
4) any of the above

Thanks for the replies guys. Any preference on the 6000 versus the 6002? Oh, and the D5 pump is the MCP655; sorry if that was unclear.
3) you won't need a rad. a rad would be counterproductive.Duh, that makes sense to me now :stick: . Ambient would effectively warm the loop!

It's more about low flow and ease of insulating any of that type of swifty block will do. I prefer 1/2"
