New kernel? I thought it was just a BIG update to the kernel but not a new kernel....

I know they are making a new kernel, an experimental one which MIGHT be used in the future but I thought Vista kernel was just a rebuild from the current kernel?

DX10 etc is incorporated into the current kernel but....

Vista is built around the 2003 kernel

Its based on the xp kernel, (as is 2003).

Its the same kernel as xp, its setup the same as xp, just with prettier graphics, and some really annoying built in security. And to top it off its somewhat of a resource hog.

But hey, its looks really good. :D

Nothing that can't be done with WindowBlinds 5.

Its not that its ugly, it actually looks very nice, just that its been dumbed down and has so much built in security that it hinders your productivity(for lack of a better word). Of course all of that can be turned off.

No, it uses the MMX extensions just like regular Windows GUI. Just takes skinning a whole step further... so you can have "aeroglass" (=glass) skins + buttons and what have you without having hardware acceleration for it. And it doesn't hog your video card either.

You can't really do a 3D interface in WinXP, but that is just stupid on so many levels... I mean why is 3D so great that _EVERYTHING_ has to be 3D these days, even text-driven GUI?

Edit: you can go to www.wincustomize.com to see how you can make your WinXP GUI shell look very, very pretty.

Edit2: something like this: http://www.wincustomize.com/Preview.aspx?Source=JJYing/wb/5364.jpg ... parts of the wallpaper are not actually drawn on the taskbar and start! menu. The skin will accept any wallpaper for a similar effect. I don't think that wallpaper even comes with the skin.

Edit3: best of all, it's not resource-heavy. It basically is just as demanding as default WinXP skinning, but with extra memory allocated to your skin. In my case, a whopping 3Mb of RAM. Beat that, M$.

Edit4: you can try the program for free, altough it doesn't load on startup and annoys you with a spash screen. For about $20, you can buy a key for it to unlock the full version... or I don't know, download it illegaly. I'm sure nobody on this forum uses legit software where they can get away with warez.

Edit5: there is no Edit5.

Edit6: refer to Edit5.

So does winblinds operate just like it was part of the os or is it obvious that you are using some 3rd party skinning app?

It's not obvious if you have the full version, however you choose to obtain it. It loads on startup, and the only way to tell that it's running is an icon in the systray (that you can choose to not display, actually).

There are also programs that let you customize your:
- mouse pointer (CursorXP)
- bootscreen (BootSkin)
- logon interface screen (LogonStudio)
- windows media player, or what have you
- windows icons (IconPackager)

Oh, and there are some other programs, like Sysmetrix... I like it because it shows me the current RAM use.

how much resource does XP use for the skins? 3mb does seem nice:D where would i check in task manager to see how much it's using for all the pretty things, haha.

go into the taks manager, its under processes and i think its called display.dll. Mines using 3.8mb right now.

Only thing that sucks is that windowblinds5 makes u buy extra programs to customize icons and such, for a total cost of almost $50.00.

The others are freeware, for the most part. Like CursorXP and LogonStudio... and, Idk, you could always use bit torrent... I mean, who the hell paid for their copy of windows here? ;) ;)

Oh, I've had a legit copy once... but it was pissing me off, so I got a cracked on instead. One that wouldn't go into activation frenzy if you change your hardware 3 times.

Yeah, they did a minor adjustment to the GUI to make it a bit more reponsive. You could do the same with WinXP via a registry key... I forgot exactly how, as I really couldn't care less if the menus took 0.2 seconds faster to load.

I hate how they disabled the menus and you have to enable them in folders.

If you use nlite to create a custom install of xp there is an option to define how fast you want stuff to load.
