This will be my first trip into AMD land...

Which one should I get... and are these good prices? Looking for a fair amount of feedback as this is a LOT of money to me and I want the best possible CPU.

AMD Opteron 165 Dual-Core

the opties are supposed to OC higher but it all luck. some opties suck just like some X2 suck. you get a 10X multi with the X2 and a 9X with the optie but you get extra cache with the optie (but i don't think it matters in rosetta).

ther general concensas of the community is that the opties are better and since it is cheaper go for it. you will just need a mobo that can hit some high HTT. probably 275+.

those are the best prices i can find espically for the optie.

mwave and tankguys have the opty for 309 + shipping

From what I can tell, cache isn't making a huge difference in daily production so it's all about clocks....the 3800+ wins that category pretty typically over 165s. One caution about the X2s is that they seem to have a much higher hit rate for BAD memory controllers than the Opterons though.

Yes, that's inconclusive, but there really is no *right* answer here.

I guess go for the cheaper one (even if the difference isn't particularly noticable, like in this case).

First venture into AMD land? Rod, I never knew that you were an AMD Virgin. I'm shocked.

If Opties generally have a better memory controller, wouldn't they be the better choice? They generally OC better (or so I've heard, just going by word of mouth here) and they should have a better mem controller. And memory speed seems to matter for R@H, as opposed to D2OL. Personally, I'd go for the opty.

And also now that I think about it... I can run 2 in one rig! Saves me from buying all the other goodies every time I want to add a CPU...

Interesting. What does everyone else think?

you can only run 2 opties if you go with a 940 pin there is no dual cpu board for the 939 socket

Well that sucks :( I assume there are no plans to make it so?

I am adding only Opty 165s to my DC farm. Go for the OEM chip as you want a good HSF like the BT or Zalman anyway. AMD is going to adjust prices by end of Jan. I heard, so maybe just get 1 rig now for testing?

DDTUNG:cool:

If there was a way to make the Opty 165s SMP capable, I'd be running QUAD DC OPTY rigs.:D

This wasn't going to happen until close to the end of the month anyway... so I'll wait a bit longer and see.

Wow Rod, you and I are thinking along the same lines here :D

I have a pair of 246HE optys along with an Iwill DK8EW sitting here waiting for me to get off my bum and order some (2 or 4 gigs) of server ram, not looking forward to that bill.... perhaps I will sell all that off and buy a couple 170 optys and DFI boards instead, hmmmmm

NOT TO HIJACK, but any input from some of the heavy hitters on the team reagarding my situation as follows...
I currently run 2 DX 2.4LVs @ 3.1 & 3.2 (crappy cooling) along with a p4 2.4c.
I am building a 3800+ X2 (on a crappy m/b). I have all the parts, just modding the case for water.

Parts that I have sitting around...
two pairs 1.6LV Xeons, 1 pair 246HE optys with Iwill DK8EW m/b....
I want some suggestions on what I should with this stuff... Any ideas?

If I were you I would:

1. Sell the optys and Iwill.

2. Sell the 2.4 LVs and run the 1.6 LVs @ 3.0

3. Use the available funds to build as many Opty 165/DFI NF4 Ultra combos as you can afford.

165s.. Generally cheaper and you get the full cache. If you dont want to spend a lot of $$ on a mb.. get the Biostar Tforce 6100 board like Jeff and I have. Kickass overclockers, lots of options and dirt cheap :toast:

Heres the Mobo

And heres the case and psu in one small price...

Another thing....power usage for the 3800+ is probably ~$10 a month LESS than the Opteron.

lol Rod... you've never had an AMD???? You poor, poor, deprived child :(

I've had both platforms and I can honestly say AMD suits me best... (in fact I have a LGA775 3.0E if anyone wants it :p:)

to runn multiple cpus you need the 2 series or 8 series but they are much more expensive for basically the same cpu, then also they are 940 pin which require ecc ram and ive yet to find a dual 940 board that has proper overclocking on it.

Good advice all! I think My next main rig will be an X2 for gaming... and all future Dedicated rigs will be a Optys! Thanks for the input.
