View Full Version : Limiting CPU usage

right - i have an X2 4400+ and when running cpu intensive tasks (such as rosetta) it dies after a few days and performs a hardshutdown.
now i know, from playing with the settings in D2OL and F@H that i can have it running at 40% for each thread with no problems. so - my question.
does anyone know how to limit the CPU usage of BOINC? if not, im affraid ill struggle to run this as it wont let you run just one thread on a dual core machine.
cheers!

If you have multi-cpu systems you can disable them in your BOINC settings (maximum cpus to use)

that is correct i have a DX with the max cup's set to 2 so it is only using 50% of the computing power and i am also running 2 x D2OL clients on the same machine for a 100% usage, but it is split between 2 projects.

thanks. used that method for now, but that cuts my points by more than limiting both threads to 40% each... ill try and find a better way of doing it. cheers guys!

Why not give it a reboot every few days? Or maybe it's your PSU that can't handle the load? I've been running dual D2OL and now rosetta on my 165 @ 2.8ghz from the day I got it without a single issue.

I haven't downloaded it myself, but this might be what you're looking for...

2nd from the bottom under Windows Apps... "ThreadMaster"

i know its criminal!
sadly i think afireinside has it right. im reckoning on the PSU - changing the ram makes no difference, nor does upping the cpu voltages. its only a 350watt shuttle psu - so at a guess as it heats up it isnt producing much at all. tried running one core only but when that maxes out for a while it crashes, so it looks like i need 80% of each core or something, will have at look at the app shmaa linked to. looks perfect!
cheers guys!

hmmm, ThreadMaster doesnt appear to do anything... got it running as a service through the instructions, other than that it doesnt seem to have any noticable effect.
as for rebooting every few days, the pc crashes an hour or so after being put to full load.

Ouch weak PSU... Is the air coming out super hot? Swap the fans for more powerful ones, it could be overheating under constant load.

the air isnt amazingly hot, no hotter than id expect from any psu really.
i cant really swap the fans out as id rather like to keep the warrenty. (spent enough money on my last pc breaking things via overclocking...)
i might try and borrow a psu i know is strong enough (Tagan/OCZ/P&PC etc) and see if that cures it. if it does, looks like im building a new system!

Did you get this working? I could get some more people to crunch for me if I could limit CPU usage...

not as yet no. i keep having a look round for programs that can limit the useage of any thread (not just BOINC) but keep failing miserably!
will let you know if i do!

What if you log into your rosetta settings and change the "Resource share" from 100 to 50 under the "View or edit Rosetta@home preferences" section. I know this is for running multiple BOINC projects... but I wonder if this would make it run @ 50% if you set it at 50??? Give that a shot.

tried that already - it only works splitting between boinc projects... eg - with two projects 50/50 would give each of them half the cpu useage...
sadly with only one project running its pretty much a meaningless number. anyone any good with writing little programs that could prehaps do this for us?

My wifes ran @ 10x280 D2OL fine. Switched to Rosetta, started getting reboots, hangs & errors. Dropped to 10x275 and kept everything else the same and except for XP's 'mandatory security reboots', nary an issue :D
