View Full Version : Laptop WR by huge margin!!!

DTR laptops are huge and chunky, although they have good gaming performance.
I have successfully created the ULTIMATE LAPTOP, featuring a laptop with 15.4"-type chassis, 7.1lb (6.68 without cd-rom), and with 7800GTX Go 256MB GRAPHICS!!!!!
Of course, since 15.4" laptops only support at max gfx cards with TDP 32W or less (7800GTX has TDP of 67W), I had to do some improvising.

Where are the XtremeSystems member comments? As the first person to ever do this, my mod can be considered more Xtreme than DI or even LN2.... guess people just don't like laptops lol.

Wouldnt mind taking something like that with me wherever I go :p:
However, for gaimng in general, I'd still stick to my desktop.

Let's see you cope with putting a 67W TDP card in a laptop only rated for 32W.... I had to deal with using a 90W PSU in an environment that needs a 130W PSU and using a heatsink HALF the size of the stock heatsink. TONS of PSU problems and laptop overheating problems...
Let's not mention that it has never been done before, so no one (including myself) knew that the laptop would even recognize the card.
I have just been glossing over them because no one likes to hear a person just complain. I've worked 15+ hours on this for two days straight.
I do think that I have been giving that impression (as you put so elequently) since I haven't mentioned the problems too much, so I don't blame you.
Thanks for the praise, other people :) The main motivation for doing this was that as a college student, I only have one computer: this laptop. I was frustrated by low FEAR fps... however even after installing, I STILL can't do 1280x960 at max settings :slapass:
However I can now max out NFS:MW at 1600x1200 and still get ~30-50 FPS :toast:

How much did it cost alltogether?
Shadowmage
01-01-2006, 08:13 AM
Laptop was $1575, graphics card (7800GTX Go) was $264 straight from Dell.
I can sell my old card afterwards (Quadro 1400 Go 256MB are worth a lot) and recoup on the price.
You should be able to do the same mod with the Latitude D810 (much cheaper), but i'm just not sure if the heatsink is smaller. If it's smaller then you're in trouble since the M70 heatsink is already tiny compared to stock 7800GTX Go heatsink.

This is GPU running below stock :(
I could upgrade to 130W PSU and push up the clocks, but then I would sacrifice some portability (this IS my main notebook, anyways)

Great job, you had to overcome quite a bit
Nice job :)
But I still think laptop weight must not exceed ~5.8lbs and they really don't need such graphics cards because you can get better PC (and better GPU) for the same price. That is my personal view.

GO MICHIGAN ENGINEERING! :D
(BTW are you still at Michigan? I'm at UMich as a freshman now)
---
DI probably won't be done due to the awkward location of the GPU... the LCD will be very close and I don't want to damage it (hard to get replacement for laptops!)
---
As for the mod pics, they are first post. There isn't too much to show in the way of mods, since it's just a GPU swap. The real trouble was with software.
---
kiwi: That was exactly my original belief. However, as a college student I can only afford one or the other. I went with a laptop since I'm hardly around at dorms anyways. This provides the best of both worlds :D

Mostly "Xtreme" undervolting.... stock volt was 1.3v. I tested at 1.2v, 1.15v, 1.12v, and 1.11v at all sorts of frequencies.
All failed :(
It is interesting to note that stock frequencies were still achieveable via Coolbits test even at 1.11v. This was not true at 1.10v.
So, I had to use 1.10v (this is 2D voltage as well as throttle voltage) for 3D voltage!
Also, BIOS is locked which means you can't set clock speeds with software. They won't "stick". Thus I had to FLASH THE BIOS EVERY TIME I WANTED TO CHANGE CLOCKS!!!! That was SO annoying.... see you desktop folks don't have to put up with that crap!
It was a LOT of trial and error. I didn't discover that the clocks wouldn't "stick" until much much later. Before then I thought I had driver or stability problems.

disable all nvida related services in system management and kill all nvidia related task with taskmanager, then the clocks should stick i think :)
hmmmmm other voltages wouldnt work... did the rails of the laptop drop too much?
did you check them?
hmmmm since those cards usually only suck from the 12v rail afaik, you could get an extra laptop psu, and external psu, shuttle xpcs have them, and then use it to power the card.
if you build in a switch then you can switch between mobile =1.1v low clocks
and station use =1.4v and higher clocks with the extra psu plugged in :D
btw, your sig doesnt show up, just an imagshack ad :D

Pretty cool though i was a bit underwhelmed looking at the scores. Thought a GTX would perform a bit better.
but after reading all of your troubles with even getting the thing to work, the scores you got are pretty sweet.

Yeah after seeing the freakin crazy SLI 512MB scores, no doubt these look pathetic.
However do remember that I'm working in a 90W budget ;) (90W Dell power adapter)
Thanks for the compliments :)
BTW disabling the services does not enable me to set the clocks, unfortunately. The BIOS is most definately locked it seems :(
However, I did manage to raise the scores (the 3dmark05 especially!) just by disabling the services and defragging!
3dmark03: 14077
3dmark05: 6418
---
I am however, incredibly pissed with Futuremark. THEY DONT EVEN SUPPORT THE 7800GTX GO CARD!!! Thus, I can't publish the scores. This normally won't be a big deal but I had finally gotten Pro status so this is not a good first experience as a 3dmark Pro bencher.

That's an interesting comment for the NVIDIA clock speed problem, I shall test it out right this moment :)
its what im getting with my atis in cf, and i know the same happens for ati and nv cards if you run them at subzero, the driver/service detent an anomaly (card running at -°? impossabol! or the card sensor reads high temps instead of below zero, or the drivers notices there are actually tw videocards in sli/cf uh? 2 cards? :confused2 ) and usually panicks :shock2:
and sets everything to stock
too bad it doesnt work for you :(
are you sure all nv services are disabled?
open msconfig
got to system -> system management -> services
and disable all nv related services, then reboot and check if they are all disabled and try again.
Wow lol that's HARDCORE advice
you asked for it :D
and yeah, fm really needs to work on the orb!
they dont recognize sli, wich is pathetic as all dsingle card scores get pushed to page 100+ of the orb, and they dont recognize some other things, like xeons (workstations use xeons) and they dont recognize dual core cpus i think... :/
your 2k5 score is around as high as my crossfire x1600pro set, wich is really nice!

Yes all services were disabled.
I will upload the BIOS... maybe someone experienced with this can figure out how to unlock :)

hmmm modding the bios is problemsatic as you will only be able to blind flash it... if it doesnt work at all after a bad bios flash i dont know how youd flash it back... theres no pci graphics card or something you could use...
you couldnt even hook up an alternative graphics card to fix a bad bios flash...
otherwise id tell you to try a retail 7800gtx bios modded for lower clocks (and less pipelines?) but seeing as theres no way back after a bad flash...
the price is awesome btw, 275$!
oh and about 90W, my dothan rig with an undervolted x850 might work, but i think id score worse :D

well x850xtpe is 70W iirc, downlocked it should be able to get it as low as 30W, with a dothan thats 55W leaving 35W for an lcd and the mainboard and memory and hdd and optical drive? sheesh.... ok, i give up ^^

Thanks!
I'll be upping the ante soon.
I'm experimenting with disabling of pipelines/vertex shaders to see if I can increase clock speeds that way. Maybe my scores will be higher overall, dunno.
However, that screwed up majorly as the screen was blank. Wouldn't return even after Windows Repair. Guru3D person finally helped me and told me to delete C:\Windows\system32\nvstrap.sys
WRITE THIS DOWN, YOU MAY NEED IT SOME DAY!!!
Also, got a 1.8ghz 400mhz Dothan coming in to be pin-modded to 2.4ghz.
EDIT: I'll be leaving for CES tomorrow. Uber laptop is coming w/me :)

I know, I've been trying to make that point to shadow too. He knows he isn't... but he likes to brag that he's the first person to do it on a laptop that doesn't use the same chasis as the 9300/xsp2. He DOES have a point... but in the end... is it really all that different?
Crap, I did my laptop mod 3 or 4 weeks ago and I didn't have to go around bragging about it :-/
