I was messing with my VMs and networking, then everything just didn't want to work.
So i turn everything off, computers, server even my broadband TV box and router.
When i turned everything back on and connect to the internet it says i have a 3Gbps internet connection when it usually says 100Mbps.
I thought something must be wrong so i turned everything off then back on again but it still says 3Gbps. Am i dreaming? Anyone know whats going on? I'm rather confused  ...yet happy at the same time

i'll give that link a try ..... after posting this up i restarted my whole system again and it still says 3Gbps.
Just tried that link, none of the locations are near me .... my download speed is about 5 times slower downloading from the US/can than from Hong Kong.
That site said my download speed is 2925Kbps. Which i know is normal when downloading from the US but is about 5 times slower than downloading from Hong Kong.

But can you achieve 3Gbps? You would need more than a Gigabit ethernet card or so. I still got 6Mbps, looks like Hong Kong owns :p

Thats the confusing part... the fastest you can get is 11Mbps in Hong Kong ... i have 6Mbps but my internet connection thingy says i'm connected at 3Gbps.

Heres what mine looks like. Kind of weak during this time of day, but you get the idea...

What you have is a 3mbit connection..3megabit/sec download speed, subtract the file overhead and you get your 2925Kbps( kilobit per second)

What does this all mean then? I still don't have any idea why it says 3Gbps.
Maybe i should just leave it alone since it works?... and when friends come over i can show off my 3Gbps internet connection, and say its for selected VIP members only!

I have a 6M connection, i think the reason the download speed is so slow is cause i'm located in Hong Kong, when ever i download something from the states or canada its very slow. I have friends with 11M connections and their download speed for the states is just as fast as mine even though they have an 11Mb connection.

You could, lol. I think its a driver issue. Did you update the NIC driver recently? Should only say 1 gigabit

The long and the short of it is that you have a middling cable speed connection, app 3megabit/second or 3000kilobit/second, same number just said differently. When you send and receive files there is an overhead that is used to identify them( I may be getting in over my head here) so you lose a little of that 3000 number and when you run a speed test you see the 2925 and when you add the overhead into it you get the 3000. Now having said that, it's all a variable from day to day, network congestion,etc..
Bottom line is you got a decent connection. Not the fastest in the world but far from the slowest.
If I made any errors describing this, anyone feel free to jump in.

Go to www.dslreports.com/speedtest and run the test..copy/paste the results here, that will answer all questions.
It should look something like this:
2005-12-28 16:27:59 EST: 2161 / 725
Your download speed : 2161 kbps or 270.1 KB/sec.
Your upload speed : 725 kbps or 90.6 KB/sec.

3 gb/sec would own all.... ::drools::

@ Haltech What internet do you have? I have cable, I wish I could do those kind of speeds.

I have problems now .... the internet connection doesn't allow anything to be reveived after a while then the whole thing dies off. Any idea why this would happen?
I have to restart my router to get it connected then the problem comes back again.

What kind of router is it? Have you flashed it to the latest firmware?

3Gbit/s is the speed you have between your interface and your gateways interface. As both should use 100Base-T, Windows will show you 100Mbit/s. From what you say it sounds like your interfaces are making troubles, there is no 3000Base-whatever standard.
Try a reset of the hardware or a driver and firmware update.

Its one you get free with the broadband subscription called 'Arescom netDSL 1200' not sure if you can update the firmware will have a look but i did i updated my drivers for my gigabit connection and all my other LAN devices and my internet connection returned to 100Mbps, which is what it normally is.

Maybe the 3Gbps connection was overloading the router?

Problem is now solved!
Had to call up a technician, he said it was the DSL modem that was causing problems, he gave me a corporate modem and now i'm connected to it at 1Gbps. Got a few VMs, BitTorrent, broadband TV and surfing the net at the same time and it feels just as fast as before.

The thing I love about this project, is that with enough RAM, it's easy to come out of nowhere. :D

I only have 1GB of RAM, running 10 VMs. Custom version of XP i did.
Gotta try out your DSL + Dimes things.
