View Full Version : STOMP, STOMP, STOMP!!! Here we come!!!

Get ready for a DOUBLE-STOMP everyone!!! Looks like we are going to take down Crunchers Inc. and BOINC Synergy in the next few days. Let us keep the pressure on and roll our way up. The next target after those two is Team Short-Media which the Free-DC stats say we should overtake in about 28 days... let's try to get them in less than 18 days!

Keep the pressure up!!! :stick:

Nice going team, soon we will have numero uno in 2 projects if we carry on like this.

Love the breaking of 200k a day Jeff, thats a serious amount of VMs youve got going there.

He is having a lot of luck with that DSL. I may try it.. i still think that VM5.0 is :banana::banana::banana:in me up. I had no probs running a lot of VMs on 4.0. I may revert back and try it.

Jeff

DSL is a labor of love right now Haltech. :D This morning I was almost late for work because I spent from 5:50am to 6:35am resetting(and adding the code to auto-start DIMES) about 30 to 40 DSL VMs. I was a typing fool.

If I can change my DSL VMs to *NOT* ask for a username and password then resetting will be much, MUCH easier.

BTW, I WANT 300,000 a day! (before my ISP yanks my connection!) I have Earthlink cable modem service currently and I'm thinking of signing up with Road-Runner *also* for a few months just to try and really push out some numbers. I figure four 1Gb sticks of memory will allow me to make two of my DC Opteron rigs into 3Gb monsters and then my little Celeron rig would increase from 512Mb to 1.5Gb. That should be good for about 30 or 40 more VMs and push me way over 300,000 a day.

I hate getting into new hobbies(read: obsessions (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=obsession)) because... well... I guess it comes down to the forum's title really... "XtremeSystems" :)

Jeff
12-28-2005, 02:28 PM
BTW Haltech... for some reason... the DIMES clients will sometimes stop reporting back to the DIMES server and you will stop getting credit. The only way to get around this is to uninstall and reinstall those clients that are doing this. I ran into that when I had to move some hard drives between rigs. Maybe that's why your output is lower?

Just keep an eye on the official DIMES stats page to see if your numbers are all going up. If they are not, then that could be your problem.

Jeff, what speed is your cable connection?

Jeff
12-28-2005, 03:53 PM
5Mb down/384Kb up

I just did the SpeakEasy.net speed test and even with all the traffic going... I'm still getting ~3.3Mb down/205Kb up. (usually it's ~4.8Mb down/380Kb up)

Well Jeff. I found my problem. I had to upgrade from V5.0.1 to V5.5.1... All of my machines are going up as we speak. Now, one downside.. I can only run 24 VMs at one time... They put a restriction on that. I dont know if the Linux version caps your ass or not.. If it does, i will be forced to walk across or build another rig. So, my 3 gigs is going to waste! Im only using 1.01 Gig of ram with 24 VMs running!! I wrote a post on VM wares forums to see if there is a way around this. My numbers should be coming up hard in the next few hours.

To throw my $0.02 in... I have been 1000% pleased with my CHEAP Bioforce TFORCE-939 motherboard. It's running an Opteron 170 at 2.75GHz with the stock heatsink and it even has onboard video. Very good price too... under $80 delivered.

Haltech, fancy sharing your windows image? Only getting ~ 5-7 on 1gb ram... Though the CPU's starting to choke a LOT....

Jeff
12-29-2005, 04:28 AM
What processor is that with?

I won a 2.4GHz Celeron/mobo/memory setup over at Free-DC and I tried loading it up with memory and VMs... only to see it choke to an almost standstill after only getting 6 on it. I ended up having to scale back down to 5 so it'd actually produce.

I was shocked because on a DC Opteron setup the processor doesn't really start working until you get over 18-20 VMs.

Its a 1.5ghz "dothan" celly. CPU sits at 97-100% load with 9VM's
A 2ghz Dothan 730 manages ~ 35% with 5vm's so it copes a little better...

Anyone got a cheap P4C??!!

This is image is modded to run on dual core, as it has the special switches to disable a core, some other tweaks and strips. After the hell i went through before with the last OS i tried to provide, this time around im keeping this one. It has pretty much everything stripped.

I'm still tryin to get a really good win install. The smallest I could make one was ~650mb while only using 63mb ram (with java and dimes). Next install I'll gt rid of Internet explorer and some other stuff. I found out that if u put the java install and dimes install in the folder before it makes the iso (that is with nlite) it puts the files onto the cd.

Out of interest have you tried installing another copy of VMware into another directory and just running 2 versions at once, or how ever many you require. There is also the other option of trying to run and install Vmware on a OS that is in fact a VM, if that makes sense. Gives you a few more options.

Could be that its restricted as you might need to run the VM Server software instead to get over the limitations.

I tried that. 2 folders and the dually using more core per VM host. Still knocked me out after 24. Ive been talking to the VM people. they said its a limitation on the software for technical reasons. They are blown away im even running 24. Im hoping they will be able to give me a patch.. Im not holding my breath. I got some memory laying around, once the MB shows up, ill add another box. That will put me ahead of Jeff, lol. I dont know if the Linux VM ware allows more than 24. Has anyone tried it? Jeff?

Just wanted to let you guys know that I'm going to be backing down to ~200,000/day. I can really notice the difference on my network and computers having them all maxed out. I'm also involved with other projects and my DC Opterons are using 50%-70% on the VMs which is just a bit too big a hit for me to feel comfortable with.

It seems that with ~17 or 18 VMs that the CPU power is only around 25%. But getting those last 6 VMs really stresses the CPU a bit. And it also is putting the hurt on my drives... I don't like seeing them active *all* the time. ;)

Well i asked my brother to try to make an OS from scratch, aiming for 10-20MB usage per VM with dimes running.
He said he might have to take an exsiting OS and modified it, so nothing has been produced yet, still just playing around to see what would be the best.

Jeff either try a win2k install or the tinyXp install. Im working on a megastrippes Win2k client now from scratch. If all goes well, ill make it into an .ISO for easy installation. 25 Megs is its foot print at the moment.

Seems the mem leak fix on the new client has made a difference. I turned off a 21 VM box and my production barely dropped for the day. Right now im defragging Vm's. Some boxes are taking longer than others. I should see an improvement from that as well.

We will be over a mill a day as soon as the weeks over
