View Full Version : Chilled oil?

I've seen this on another site, can't remember which, but anyways:
Can I make a submerged PC, then run chilled oil through it? Mineral oil is not electrical conductive, and it's clear. This way, I'll set up an under oil "air cooling".
I can always use an oil pump, or dirty water pump, or even super-conductive super charged (overclocked) low temp pump.
Suggestions needed.
What other kinds of fluid are clear and non electrical conductive? I'm thinking pure alcohol, not sure yet.

a better question is what kind of fluids are non conductive and non corrosive :P

can u use dielectric grease
all of this is just wasted expense, go with antifreze/alch or just a denatured alch mix, who cares if its conductive? if you build it right you shouldent have to worry about leaks.

Ok, wait a sec, do u want to have the whole comp submerged and the oil cooling everything, or do you want to have oil in a WC system for low temps? I cant understand exactly. Pure alcohol is definetly flammable, so I would stay away from that. http://dsifluids.com/. That is where charlie got his oil from for his oil adventure (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=52004&highlight=trapped). I cant tell if u wanna make a wc system with oil, or if you wanna submerge your pc.

Actually, both.
It will look like a wc system: chilled oil with one huge wc block.
It also works like an air cooled comp, because the entire setup will have passive air cooling HS on there.
I've tested some parts with mineral oil, works well, but the non of the fans can push the oil, that's why I got these motors:

12v oil pumps, 12v motor, both are simple wires, so overclock is possible.

If you want to submerge the fluid of choice would be something made by 3m called Fluorinert. The only drawback to this fluid is that it is by no stretch of the imagination cheap. From the last bit of reading i did about it i seem to remember a price of approximatly $500 per gallon. There is a link to many different types of Fluorinert below.

I know of a site that had a project like this but they said you needed to change out the oil every couple weeks cause they claimed that it molded ( i think ).
I remember we had some contraversy over wether or not that the oil would have molded or not.
But you can put it in mineral oil, the people that I saw do it used veg oil cause it was cheap.
They used fans to push the oil to keep it moving.

I didnt know the forums cleared off old threads lol, so the vege oil project isnt on here anymore 0.o
if someone has the link to those guys it would be awesome if youd post it.
Cause IMO vege oil would be the cheapest way to go, since we decided that bacteria and what not wouldnt grow/live in the oil.
And because you could go to sams and get like 3 gallon size jugs of it for around 12$ usd lol.
BUT listen to the guys here with more experience, id hate to give you a lot of false info :) so if someone could back me up or prove me wrong have at it.

there are a few few vids on this site with the oil cooled pc they set up in thier magazine, i think the only way to see that guide is if your a subscriber to the mag
http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/article.asp?CIID=26054
but i think that they done it a while before the site that was listed above

lumidol looks good so far... it gets bit slush below -20c but I've seen it operating fine below -30c so far. I think -40c might need good pump but I am not aiming for that temp anyway on this chiller build.
