afaik
aopen and asus both have such plans as desktop yonah mobo which is based on 945GT chipset

Yonah will be dead once Merom/Conroe family hit the market

so if you just buy it for fun, go ahead. it is not recommended to buy such a system for long term usage cuz 64-bit will be here, soon, to cover the entire computing market

ecs has talked about an i975 board for the yonah :)

i, for one, will keep this system untill the next conroe, depending on how good it turns out.

Yonah will still be worth while on the desktop, especially for people like me still running S478 Northwoods and AGP! Yonah will fill the gap during the wait for Conroe. As long as mobo support is good that is :)

Who needs 64 bit anyway? :p:

I thought the date was the 19th? Could that be the other 955xe stuff?

Good question..would really extend the life of the board if this is true. I thought i heard somewhere that this was the case but im not completly sure.

It's not about having 64 bit or not to me, but yeah, it couldn't hurt to have it. But you simply don't need it today. When looking at cheap Semprons and Celerons with 64 bit it's a bit strange that Yonah won't have it. There are two explanations for this. Since the budget processors are based on A64 and P4 it was quite easy to give them 64 bit instructions, while doing the same for Yonah would need some more work. Intel would probably have done it if Yonah was supposed to be the top performer for more than a year = beyond the launch of Windows Vista, but now they know for sure that Merom will be ready before Vista so why worry? They will just sell even more CPU's. Yonah didn't get 64 bit because it's not worth it, it's probably the last true 32 bit CPU from Intel ever and it's successor will show up 7 months later.

People* will go "Whoah! A dual core Laptop! I must have one!", and 9 months later they'll scream "Whoah! Vista! I need a 64 bit laptop! Now why did I sell my T64 in the first place...". Conroe will show up in July AFAIK, and while Core Duo will use less power, it will also have lower performance. I see no reason for a XS guy to go for Yonah unless you upgrade more frequently than once a year, or want a laptop (and blabla..you're not XS if you keep the same system for longer than three months..blabla...*insertstupidsmiley*)

Have Intel (or AMD) ever made a top performing CPU design (and I mean core, not socket) like this one that you knew from the beginning that it would have such a short life? Yeah, it's not like it will disappear in Q3, it will stay for a while as a low power mobile CPU, but you know what I mean.

*Those people are probably not members of the XS forums.

Yeah, as you said, buying a Yonah to use on desktop is such a dilemma, once Merom is out, Yonah will worth nothing.

I'd rather stick on Dothan and wait for Conroe LOL

Im having a problem deciding on what to do myself. My old 533FSB Northwood is getting long in the tooth. Im not sure if i can wait till Q3 for Conroe. Think Yonah would fill this 7-10 month gap well? Or should i just buy a 975x and cheap Pentium D and hope conroe will run on a 975x?

I would switch to conroe after Vista comes out anyway but even still i dont think it REQUIRES 64bit cpu support, i thought there was a 32 and 64 bit version of the OS.

Don't, do not buy a product and hope it will be compatible with some future stuff, at least from Intel, it always disappoint you LOL

You have four options IMO:

1 - Conroe, come on, you can wait for this one! I really think they will show up in July, and that's not so far away.
2 - K8, don't think you want AMD, but...
3 - Yonah, don't listen to the hype. (You'll be king for a day (or six months), fool for a lifetime. Ok, I don't mean it but I just had to write it..)
4 - 65 nm PD, well I dunno...

Of course it will run with 32 bit only, don't worry.

If i go with K8 i may as well wait for M2. I think ill take the wait and see approach, see how i fair in the next batch of games this year and do what i can to hold out. If worse comes to worse i can always garb a Pd and 975 but thats only a option if the chipset can support Conroe in the future. Yonah is still a option as i can grab conroe and use the old Yonah hardware to update my aging linux box:) But for now i guess i need to take the "wait and see approach".
