A buddy of mine dropped of his lappy to me and asked if I can help him get into it, aparently when he got it from dude at local pc shop the guy installed winblows 2000 and admin with a pw on it, he asked the guy what it was and they guy said hell tell him for 100 bux..

So he called me and I said ill give it a try... Any suggestions?

So far all I know is I turn it on and it goes directly to the screen doesnt show post or boot up or anything related to that, black screen all way to Pw prompt, I was just gonna throw XP on there and reformat it , but dont I need to go thru push any button to boot from cd?

So far I havent tried anything yet, I figured theres something I can do to bypass this, maybe, maybe not... We shall see... thnx in advance :toast:

Hmm...

a) Sue the guy
b) Beat him with a stick
c) Beat him with a pipe
d) Deny him entry into the adult section of his favourite video store.

Is this even legal? I'm sure there is an ethical and absolutely legal way to bypass this ;)

Interesting that it won't go through POST, remove the battery, might be in hibernation.

First thing: remove the onboard battery, that will take care of any BIOS password.
After that, to remove the W2k password you have a number of choices:

1.Beat up the guy at the shop... (Hm, could be hard to get away with)
2.Put the HD in another laptop and format it... (Easy, but you end up with an empty HD... re-installing time anyone?)
3.Clear the admin password using floppy or bootable cd (http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/)

laptop bios buttons are usually F2, del, or esc. just try pressing those and that should solve it. If not, u can give the battery a try. Also, when u boot from the xp cd, u wont need to know the 2000 password. Also I think u should definetly beat the guy up. Thats pretty dirt-bag.

thats definitely shady. Yeah, just pull the battery or reformat the drive itself and slap XP Pro on there. Then smack that guy in his face.

Such a shame that you can sue for ANYTHING in the US. In good ol' Europe you could take a slug at him and he'd have to be retarded to try to sue you, amongst other things because if the lappy incident.

Giving someone a whooping when he deserves it is one of the great laws of nature :)

if that would have happened to me i would find the dudes car and make it not be ale to drive (using everything i can imagine). a few pounds of sand in the gas tank sounds pretty neat :p
and then i would spray this on his windshield "this is worth 100$ right".

that is just messed up.
try booting into overclockix (its a livecd version of knoppix) and recovering your password through it.
