View Full Version : Where to buy/ask/borrow?

I'm building something similar to a phase change unit, except way smaller, and higher temps.

I'd like to know where I can find the following tools?

Flexible Line that can handle 100psi or above.
Vacuum pump
2mm copper plate
milling machine or CNC mill
R134a, Freon 21
Pressure gauge
copper tube that can handle 100psi or above
condensor with copper pipe
used air conditioner or pump (couldn't find any, Canada is too cold for that, lol)

I live in North Vancouver, BC, Canada
Local hardware stores: Canadian Tire, RONA, Home Depot, Walmart, Zellers. I'm having a lot of trouble finding a good place to shop or to use those items.

Question:
If I made my own phase change system, do I need a license to get those air conditioner people to fill it up? It might look a little ghetto, so ya... OR, I could fill it up myself, but coundn't find a place for coolant. My engineering teacher doesn't want me to do it in his lab, lol, after I showed him my plasma flame.

What kind of compressor does cars use? I think it soudn't be too big since there isn't much space and power for it. I'm more looking for -10'C rather than -50'C or -100'C, so, ya, temp isn't a problem here.

What's going to happen if I don't vacuum pump the loop first?

And finally, a n00bish question: how much psi are in most loops?

Anyways, help would be much appreciated:cool:

do you have a wheelbarrel to haul all your money in ? Kidding aside their are local refrigeration shops and wholesale stores if you look. start in the yellow pages under refrigeration, hvac heating, air conditioning, then when you call if they don't have what you need ,jusk ask, they will point you to a distributer.

An engine driven one .. Not really that suitable to have an engine next to your computer just to cool it.

Any water / moisture in it would freeze up, blocking up the cap tube ..

LOL when I add it up over time, I've already got a bucket full but if I had to add a milling/cnc machine to that, I'd be worse than broke and likely divorced by now.

Really it's best to focus on necessities first, your manifolds, vac pump, recovery stuff, etc. and worry about the niceties of a bunch of heavy equipment later. Choice is your's, and if you have the cash to buy everything at once that's great but if you add up all the costs it might scare you away from getting started.

As far as the other questions, a lot of it is covered in the stickies, so if you have a good read through first, that'll take a lot of the questions and mystery out of working with phase.

Cheers

I have looked at the stickes, but non of the online stores is in Canada, or have a low shipping.
I'm wanting to buy a flex line and condensor ATM, and try to borrow those heavy equipment else where, lol I stated in the topic buy/ask/borrow. My highschool is too poor to have a working cnc, local machinary wants to charge me $2000 for some block milling, even the one from China wants $200...
