I am making a Phase Change system, and i want to know if i can use butane to solder the pipes. Many people use mapp gas but i can't find one.

could be hard to get high enough temps with butane. get a propane brazing set ;)

Hmmm... I read somewhere that butane gets the same temps with propane... Is that true?

it is possible to braze pipes with butane but it will take a long time to heat up the pipes

it would be close to impossible to do an evap with butane

For the evap i m ok. I will get it to a friend to do it with oxygen. The problem is with the pipes. It will take VERY long time to heat the pipes?

Using a propane torch won't melt silfoss, trust me i've tried lol.

This is particularly a problem when brazing the ports on your compressor it acts as a big heat sink. So if you can't quickly get the temps you need the compressor just dissipates the heat. I know I tried it using just MAPP gas for 5 min and never got it hot enough with oxygen it took only seconds.

ya just get a mapp or oxy/act torch

I'll second that Silfoss doesn't melt with Propane torch. MAPP is a must. I had no trouble getting the service port valves brazed in. I just cranked up the torch beyond the recommended flame for a brief while. I tried a Oxy/Act torch but that just cuts through pipes. I'd not recommend it for rookies.

Also, I've read that the Oxygen tanks get used up rather quickly and as a disposible item they are not that cheap. Whereas I've not used 2 MAPP cylinders yet (with a good deal of brazing).

MAPP is easy to use and I havent found anything I could not do with it.

I use an acetylene torch, (no oxy, jsut acetylene) and it works pretty well, I find that oxy/acetylene heats up too quick, or, the more likely answer, I suck at brazing =)

Yup,
Thats where the skill part comes into play:cool:
