question for you guys
I went out and bought a Maxtor HD and what i had in was a western Digital..(its making lots of bad sounds and will not boot)
I have copied my old hard drive to the New one and set it as the new boot drive...Everything works fine as long as i have the old drive still connected..But when i disconnect the old drive and try to boot with new drive i get an error "
Windows XP could not start because of the following ARC firmware boot configuration problem:
Did not properly generate ARC name for HAL and system paths. Please check the Windows XP (TM) documentation about ARC configuration options and your hardware reference manuals for additional information. Boot Failed. "
anyone know how to fix besides formating it.
thanks

NOTE: If the disk signature in the MBR gets overwritten (for example, by a virus) or changed (corrupted) so that it no longer matches the signature() value in the Boot.ini file, you may receive the following error messages when you start the computer:
Windows 2000 could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware. Please check the Windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information.
-or-
Windows could not start because of the following ARC firmware boot configuration problem: did not properly generate ARC name for HAL and system paths. Please check the Windows documentation about ARC configuration options and your hardware reference manuals for additional information.
If you receive one of these error messages, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base to help resolve the problem:
119467 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/119467/EN-US/) Creating a Boot Disk for an NTFS or FAT Partition
Because the signature() syntax replaces the scsi() syntax, the same requirement applies in that a file named Ntbootdd.sys is required in the root folder of the system partition to address the SCSI controller at startup. This file is the specific SCSI miniport device driver for the SCSI adapter from which you are booting, renamed to Ntbootdd.sys and placed in the root folder of the system drive.
For additional information about ARC names in the Boot.ini file, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
102873 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/102873/EN-US/) Boot.ini and ARC Path Naming Conventions and Usage

You could try booting from the XP cd (with just the new HDD installed, check jumpers too while your there) and select the "recovery console" when prompted. You should get a DOS style screen, type fixmbr (maybe fixmbr C: ), then type exit (or reboot) and try booting from the new disk. It might not help at all but its worth a go if nothing else is working for you, its saved a few disks of mine in the past.
Take it easy.

or just pull the old drive out and boot from the CD and choose "install" and then when it searches for previous installs, hopefully it will find it and you can just press "R" to repair the previous install which should get you going.............
for crap like this I have an awesome tool called 7tools Boot Corrector. DO a google search for it, you have to buy it but it was worth it for me saved my arse countless times!! it makes a bootable CD that you can use to get out of many jams....
take out the old disk, boot the XP CD and go to the recovery console. Do a FIXBOOT and FIXMBR and your set.
