i have a vapochill, and i was wondering if you HAVE to put paste all over the socket before you put the processor on? or can you really live without it?

whatever you do, do not put thermal paste in the socket!!! lol
get some di-elecrtic grease and you'll be fine

use the dilectric grese;
save the cpu/board;
save your self some money;
be happy;
its needed, thats why its done.

good point Manka, I actually seen someone fill their socket with arcic silver...
DONT:put Thermal Paste in the socket
DO: put Dilectic Grese in the socket and around

Could it be that he decided to fill in only the holes? He would have still been an idiot though, way too hard to do that without leaving a hole or two connected.
What about arctic silver ceramique? its non-conductive, but unless you need a few extra inches of frosty PCB around your CPU, I doubt theres a purpose (I guess you could be trying to extend the frost to the chipset, maybe the ram..)

Whenever I bring a socket below the dewpoint, I fill up the socket with grease, coat all the pins, and about 2 inches around the socket gets covered in a sealant. Water is the enemy, grease is the protection. Freeze safely.

If you mean dielectric grease you may put it but you may pass without it, but you have to really assure yourself you have a very good sealing and thermal insulation around your cpu and socket; just look at the first sticky in this forum,

Bear in mind, guys, that the thermal goop that they give you in the Vapo kits is just fine to use in the socket. They tell you it's good for that, and I've personally used it with no problems myself. Hundreds if not thousands of Vapo users have used it without issue, and that's proof enough.
Personally I prefer Di-electric but as long as it isn't conductive and preferably not capacitive, then it's not a problem. Some Di-electric is mildly capacitive so it's recommended to use a type you know that others have used without a problem.
Arctic silver isn't conductive (no, not anymore, the older versions were), but is capacitive, so using it in a socket isn't a great idea.
Besides, do you think that a company would risk liability by telling you to use something that would break your gear and risk getting sued, and more importantly, bad press? Seriously...

well i did mean that white stuff that came with the vapochill kit. i just hate cleaning up the thermal paste afterwords, when i sell the motherboard.
