Well, I accidentally "killed my opty" or at least shorted one of the capacitors on it. I figured since my 3700+ works with about 4 of them cut off (IHS accident) that if I cut off the offending cap on the opty it might work? I am tentative, however, because I am afraid it might kill my mobo. Just wondering if you guys thought it really could kill the mobo?

err, I don't think you can kill the motherboard unless you short something out on it. I doubt removing something on the CPU will short out any traces on the motherboard to cause it harm.

but then again, never tried it :p

yea, I was going to try it again 2morrow before buying a new one. I will be careful with the new one. Hoping for some more opinions because I dont want to end up with a dead mobo on my hands.

A CPU could kill a mobo. A CPU with a capacitor removed and nothing else should not kill a mobo.

alright, then Ill give it a shot 2morrow before I order another one. But, seriously, what do you think the chances of cutting off a bad capacitor would make it work are?

Hello,

My CPU still works with missing component (got damaged in transport, doh). Before i took it off it was causing a short which wouldnt let the mthbrd get power never mind boot up. After removing everything works fine, overclock the same, I would like to know what exactly these things do?

from what I have been told, they regulate voltage to keep it more stable to the core.

I think Major was saying removing noise from the memory controller signals also.

fun stuff, well, I tested the cpu and its no go. Officially dead, time to go buy another one. I was going to buy some redlines with this money....* sniff*.
