I'm gonna make an evap and w/c condensor for my project, but i'm really pushed for space. I was thinking of doing a double-coil in a tube HX for both (larger coil downwards, small coil upwards in the middle inside another shell so coolant is rerouted to follow the refrigerant). My question is would the lubricant be able to follow the refrigerant flow upwards? is there a certain gradient it can't pass?

The condensor must flow top to bottom because its goes gas -> liquid.

I'm a bit confused as what exactly you mean, but from what I can gather, you're building a heat exchanger so you can cool water for a water cooling loop yes? If that's what you mean, the water doesn't condensor, the refrigerant just evaporates, therefore direction of flow isn't a huge issue. As long as your refrigerant and Oil are compatible, you should have any worry's, althought adding a little propane would help. Anyone else care to comfirm this?

yes,
the oil will flow with refrigerant, even against gravity, other wise the evap would flood with oil and not work. Your compressor would burn up at that point.

The oil actually mixes with the refrigerant to an extent. There are tons of designs out there with vertical flow in evaporators.

Set your condenser like said before, downlard flow.

Thanks for the replies. Now at least i know how to go about doing this, school starts next week and i begin fabrication. Hopefully i can keep updates here.

Later.

Sorry for the belated correction. I was thinking condensor double coil one down one up. I have done exactly what you want to do, two coils. Definitley works.

From my forums searching oil return isn't a big deal in the size systems we are building.
