Ok, after using the search feature and not getting any real info on what I need, here I go...
I just went out and bought a Big Typhoon air cooler. I decided to do this after my computer kept screaming at me for overcolcking my lil Athlon XP 1700+ chip to around 4Ghz. I decided it was time for the junk fan & heatsink to go.
I want to stick a Peltier in there to do a little better cooling than just air. I want the 350W one I found in this eBay search. (http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&satitle=Peltier+cooler) It seems a little huge for my application though, and I want to be able to use my power supply also without adding an additional power supply to my computer. i also want to stick one on my northbridge chip and my videocards. My question is which ones would be the best for what applications? I'm upgrading my system in the near future so I'm planning ahead but am going to use this on my current setup also.
Another thing that I'm worried about is the forst that these things create... What is the best way to insuate them so i wont get a frosting problem? I want to keep the condensation as far away from my computer as possible.
The computer that I'm doing this to is my network server/gaming computer/data recovery mule so it's basically on 24/7 but still...

Wont work very well if at all.
You dont need to worry about condensation (nigh on impossible with a aircooled TEC on A64) You need to worry about the fire you might start when the TEC overheats and melts your PC.
which ones would be the best for what applications?
In a word .. NONE!
You dont seem many people with aircooled TEC.
The reason is because it dont work very well.
If you want to watercool a TEC there are plenty of threads to read... but its going to be EXPENSIVE!!!
I dont mean to be nasty, or overly negative.. but your PC is a VERY poor candidate for TEC.

Yup, Holst is right. Air cooled tec is not recommended Not only is not sufficient but you have to use a Vantec Tornado fans just to cool the tec and they are loud like an air plane. The best bet is to invest in a water cooling unit then upgrade later on for your tec

Ok, well here's something for thought. I have two TEC mini-coolers that I recieved from a grocery store. They were used in the dairy department as stand alone coolers for pie crusts, cookie dough, cheese etc... These units using only 4 fans keep whatever you can fit in there at a steady 30*. It uses a single 120mm fan on the hot side with another 120mm fan sucking out the hot air (like being in a series) and a single 80mm fan on the cold side that blows into the storage container (where you would put the items) and a little-ass 40mm fan for the 12v power supply. I've stuck 8 2L bottles of warm coke in there and within a couple of hours they were colder thatn they would be if I put them in a fridge.
If using air on TEC's are so inefficient than why is this system not water cooled? Now any other TEC cooler units like this are all air cooled, not water cooled. I wonder why this could be.
I was cinsidering taking a unit apart and using all the guts to cool the inside of a spare case that I have to see how it would do just for curiosity... Prob won't work all that well but it would look crazy.
oh and btw if you actually learned to read you would see that I said that I'm planning on upgrading the system sometime soon and even If I wasn't I'm still overclocking the living crap out of it, seriously pull the dink out of your ass Holst geez.
I was going to get a watercooling unit but I'd rather spend the money on better hardware parts :)

Heres why they can use aircooling there and not suffer: theres virtually no heatload.
And I highly reccomend not being a :banana::banana::banana::banana: to long-time and respected members who know their stuff, especially when these are your first 2 posts.
Air cooling cannot keep up with the 300-400 watts that a decent TEC and CPU/GPU will be putting. in a minifridge, the heatload is puny. far less than 100 watts on the hotside and probably less than 50.
Their system doesn't need to be watercooled to not suck; in a computer, it does.

Umm you do realize that those pelts have no heat load on them and a low wattage per square inch say 30 watts per inch. IE easily cooled by air. You need a minimum of a 172 watt pelt to cool off a modern A64 or P4 not overclocked. Considering that heatload is atleast 100 watts you need to cool a ballpark figure of 275-300 watts when you show me a HS that can cool that and fit in your case without ripping out your motherboard and I will say go for it.
Also once you go WCing you will never go back only foward.

You want to use your regular power supply, cool your CPU, cool your northbridge, cool your video card, and lambast forum members who are trying to help you... all at the same time? What an idiot! :fact:
First of all, you can't air cool a processor with a peltier anymore. Secondly, you can't use your regular power supply - the TECs would take 400+ watts alone. Besides, any peltier worth buying uses 24 volts. Guess how much a PC PSU gives out, that's right, only 12. Another thing, last time I checked, pies don't normally require copper heatsinks with fans to keep from overheating, so there wouldn't be much of a load on the TECs for a food cooler.

The only way you would get something like this to work is with an undervolted TEC. Not gonna work with a full power TEC.
Not to mention the whole modifying a HSF to take a pelt thing, plus you are gonna need a 62mm pelt for that kinda load, I dont know of any HSFs that will take a TEC that big......

4ghz?!?! I'm gonna have to call shens on that... you wouldn't get 4ghz with the best 1700 in the world, an LHe circulatory system, and a lot of luck... Never gonna happen... Aircooled TECs will not work, if they did, we'd all be running TT Subzero 4G's. as for multiple TEC's off your main PSU, that's not gonna happen easily (unless you have a couple of 1kw PCP&C's powering your rig). Bear in mind, that the rated wattage of your pelts, is the ammount of wattage they will pull from your PSU. If you wanted to cool a 350w TEC with a BT, you wouldn't get very good temps at all...
