View Full Version : SightGlass
Can a sightglass be placed vertically or it it best to lay it horizontally. I have very limited space left and a few flare connection kind of hard to do proper pipings. So the sightglass may have to to be connected to the TXV in a vertical manner is it alright to do so or is positioning it horizontally still the way.

yes, but its best to follow manufactures suggestions, a lot don't recommend 45 degree angles.

I don't think it matters a sight glass is a sight glass regardless of its position its gonna fill up with liquid refrigerant if there enough in that location.

not true, depending on glass design, the flow entering or exiting a partially full glass at obscure angles causes turbulance which can produce bubbles, giving a false indication.
lol that is something to learn and take note from. I bet a kink joint before a sight glass can make worst judgements.

I disagree most if not all sight glasses are designed to work at any angle because you don't know what circumstances there will be when one is installed in a system, im talking about the real refrigeration industry here not these tiny homemade pc chillers. I've seen sight glasses in all positions and they all do the same thing.

I see a lot of equiptment that is installed incorrectly, I have seen installation sheets saying do not install at 45 degree angles.
Saying these "tiny homemade pc chillers" are not "real refrigeration" is just wrong. In fact because of the lower temps that are being acheived they are more extreme than the "real refrigeration industry". hope the guys dont put you on the black list , they work hard on their rigs.

Dude im talking about the bigger things than these cpu chillers such as heat pumps, walk in fridges and freezers, building AC's,etc. Having the lowest possibile temp IS NOT how it works in "real refrigeration industry". You urself should know that if thats what u really do.:stick:

Somehow I still can't think vertically or 45 degree angled sight glass is the recommended method of installation. Real refrigeration world might have bunch of them but I always hear few HVAC guys crying out loud, who the :banana::banana::banana: built this thing... so what you mean real might not be best option. In our case though, I can see many reasons not to do 45 degree angle or perpendicular sightglasses for sure.
