View Full Version : How about some guidelines for showing Overclocked presentations and screenshots?

I see all these great overclocks showing 1M Super PI. As most of us know 1M Super PI doesnt show stability, even 32M SuperPI is a walk in the park for an overclock that can fail in 10 mins of prime95. I know there is no way for mods to enforce but how many would agree that a screenshot showing Prime for a few hours would be appreciated in an overclocked presentation?
I'm so tired of seeing 1M SuperPI and 3.1 Ghz at 1.50v. Thats great and all but we all know that doesnt mean your stuff is stable.
What I think would be cool to do is to have a thread for max prime air opteron overclocks and one for water / chilled (extreme cooling) max prime air. The length of Prime95 could be determined later - maybe a minimum of 4 or 8 hours. Consider this - OCCT and SuperPI are half hour stress tests we really need to be showing something more than this when presenting a successful overclock to the forum. Having someone come in and post his great overclock of 3.1 Ghz at 1.5v then later seeing 10 posts on how his overclock deteriorated throughout the day is just annoying - it was never stable in the first place - temps change, heat builds up, the chip gets stressed, etc..
Does anyone else agree or am I just unrealistic to think that 1m SuperPI isn't the 'be all end all' of stability testing an overclock? :slapass:
Personally I would never show a screenshot of an overclock without having primed ~10 hours first... thats just me.
Thanks

In my opinion there´s 2 types of oc. Competitive & 24/7.
It´s clear that a spi 1m doesn´t show any estability, it´s just showing how high can you pass it.
Personally i don´t like prime or other benchs intended for stability, i´m just having fun overclocking. No need to find stability because that´s not mi intention, just find the maximum overclock.
It would be a nice idea to divide these 2 types of oc.

No one cares about 24/7 speeds because you don't need that kind of stability to run benches and get scores out.
As long as you're getting a score or a shot that's better than anything else; that's all that matters.
Places where people play games or do real work with computers are places for showcasing 24/7 speeds.
I dont really see the point of a screenshot that shows amazing clocks if ya cant do anything with them. Thats why I only post once I got a full run of benchmarks at whatever speed. It is good to see things like 4GHz on an A64, but i`m a million times more impressed seeing 3DMark runs at 3.8-3.9.
I only overclock for benchmarks...my everyday stuff doesnt need clock speeds like that.
just my opinion

A 27.90 sec suicide SS is as useful to me as the bsod that follows lol

I think D2OL for a week stable would be good. Unlike Prime, where you're stressing your CPU for periods of time, but other than knowing you're stable, nothing comes of it, with D2OL, it keeps your CPU stressed 24/7 and it's going to help cure diseases. Sounds pretty good to me

If you think running benches under a stable overclock is neat then I suggest you try running some beyond that point because it's much more challenging. Personally I think one of the main focus of these forums is to get every last Mhz out of a system, and then to bench them as hard as possible.
You also need to realize that alot of the guys around here run under xtreme cooling, and I can guarantee you that most of them won't waste their time running Prime for any of that precious bench/tweaking time. PI 1M is good because it's quick and does indicate a fairly stable overclock. Do you seriously want me to buy 50Lbs of DI just so I can be bored to tears watching my rig prime for 10 hours?
Anyway most of the good overclocker will show stability tests in addition to the xtreme stuff anyways. So my suggestion to you is read the name of these forums and think about what that means.

This is the never ending dead horse beatin'.
People should be entitled to run whatever suits their need with their rig, be it prime or spi, anyway, i don't wan't somebody to tell me what my rig should run.

Obviously using DI wouldn't be something you'd run 24/7 :slapass:
GHZ put it clearly:toast:...Torture that cpu with the coldest operating temp. or put it in water loop and baby it with ambient temp.
Thats it ...2 choices:)

I agree with you dean for the most part.
I love to see what people can get their rigs to do, be it stable or not. Me, I go for 24/7 stability but that's just me. I don't want to be 2 hours into a mission in whater flavor of game I'm playing only to have a reboot or system lock.
The suicide screenies are great just as long as they are labled as such and not being passed off as a "stable system". Just include in the post whether it is a suicide shot, highest bench, or a 24/7 stable overclock.

Ya think? So I guess I can't post my overclocks achieved on DI here in your book ;)

24/7 isnt Extreme.
Extreme is something that lasts under 25s... hey wait thats SuperPi 1M... OMG THATS WHY THEY USE SUPERPI 1M?!?!
Its just two different paths of oc .......Best to run it with two different system rigs:)

I didnt say it shouldnt be posted - but post it in the Extreme Overclock section not the AMD section.
