Right now I use a program to automatically control the fan speed on 6800, when I am not gaming, the fan spins at low speed but it is still audible. I want to know if there is a solution that allows the noise to drop lower or even mute completely with reasonable temperature. (~50C idle is fine)

Passive would be fine, but a good airflow is definately needed then...

gigabyte offers(or offered) a 6800nu with a passive cooler. it was available to anyone, so it had to work even where bad airflow was. it was pretty big tho.

wouldn't just rivatuner work and put fanspeed to 60% or sth :)

At least I'm using that with my 6800GT and have it constantly running at 75% speed.

Alternatively you could pull the stock cooler plate off and rig up a 70MM fan. I did this before I bought my NV Silencer.

Silencer if you have a tight case
Zalmann if you have plenty of room for air to move
