Still have problems, When I set core frequency and run a 3d app it shows the core frequency as way below default when I exit the app. Also 700MHz core give me a blackscreen, but 700 using the OC tool is fine 24/7

Yup,still no better for me,core clocks set to whatever after 3d and still black screen entering 3d with memory clocks.

I had that problem also. :)
So far i am doing this on air cooled with my 2nd X1800XT card.

I am on air cooling and so far I am at 708 on the core with v1.400 to it and my max load temp was 64C
But I cannot set clocks with ATITool still...it blacks out my screen as soon as I hit a 3D App. So I am still using OverClocker and ATITool just for temps.
Now when I set a clock in OverClocker in the 2D part when I benchmark is it switching it to the Default 3D Clocks?

It should be in 2d standard from what I understand.
Just use overclocker for clks and ati tool for voltage increase.
But, on air be cautious how much you increase voltages and measure your
voltage points on the card with an handy DVM or DMM.
As long as the temps are good everything should be fine correct?
And ATITool still gives me lower scores...

Temps and watch your voltage on air. ;)
Well I have had voltage up to v1.425 and Temp never went above 64C at 715 on Core..but even at that score was lower with Mem at 847 than my score using ATI CCC at 690/800.

So what's your progression with GPU clock to GPU volt so far ?
1.275v stock = 690mhz
1.3v = ???mhz
1.325v = ???mhz
1.425v = 715mhz
@eva2000
I am not sure...I got system lock up at 730 @ v1.425
I am not sure if it is OverClocked locking it up or just the card needing more voltage..
I can get 700 out of stock voltage though.

I have run a handfull of benchies at max volts (1.6) on the stock heatsink without issue,although i had 8c ambients.I got from 681(2d) stock volts to 770 at 1.6v(1.57 actual).No heat artifacts,just lock-ups due to lack of voltage i think.

Well been testing with my X1800XL and artifact scanning does work with my card. You have to make sure its set to the Old Style. But it does seem to know what will and what won't work.
Havn't been able to play with it too much more though rams failing on my computer so going to be waiting for an RMA to do anymore OC's :(

I used the old method with the previous method too, it somewhat worked but would find artifacts that weren't really there. On both version 9 & 10 when i do an aftifact scan at my overclocked settings it will work for a while then as the card heats up, it will lock my pc - but everything works great running 3dmark05 and playing games at max settings, 1600 x 1200. i'm not sure if the artifact scanning generates so much heat that it crashed my pc, but i do know that my OC is stable in games.
has anyone experienced this?

I think the reason my sapphire is a bit poor is because the default core voltage is about 1.265 (actual),when others are reporting getting 1.3/1.31.

I've been hearing 1.275 ish in ATITool (1.3 in OC) is the voltage. Which reads out to 1.265ish with a digital multimeter.

Very strong possiblity. Connect 3d shows 1.30-1.31 using DMM.
Stock cooling and voltage at 1.3 my max core clk is 725.
I rather vmod this card though, I dislike the thought of software controlling
voltage on video cards. Vmods never droop when vr is set correct.

My card has gotten pretty hot too at times. After playing about 30 mins of fear my card was at a steady 80c! I saw the card even reach into the 90's after looping 3dmark01 for about 45 mins. Nature in 01 really heats up the card big time. Does anyone know and care to share what the MAX safe temps are for the XT card and when it starts to get into danger zone? Thanks.

Currently with 1.15/2.108/2.108 (599/675) I'm hitting PWM: 50C, GPU: 54C, and Env: 33C
Not bad :) This is looping 3D Tests and also playing games. FEAR seems to get near the same temps as the 3D Marks, but Quake 4, that runs pretty cool, mid to upper lower 40's
cantankerous
12-02-2005, 05:00 AM
yea I noticed my XL had much cooler temps as well. I usually had about mid 50's into vey early 60's max if I had the door closed to the room. This XT is a whole other thing though, it idles mid to late 50's and easily hits 80+ at full load. This is with fan at about 40-45%. Any higher is obviously cooler in temps but much, much louder. I take it 80c+ is ok for a temp? Sounds awfully high. What is the max these can take and when would you guys say I'm hitting the danger mark in temps. For a bit yesterday I was into the 90's however the fan never seems to speed up to further cool it down. Why is this?
deathman20
12-02-2005, 05:19 AM
I'd say 80C is quiet high. My last card X800Pro modded to 16pipes, was in the mid to upper 70's as a high. I truely would set the fan speed to ramp up more during full load.
If your playing games, im sure it can probably you can withstand the 100% ffan setting. But I'd of thought that when it gets that high the fan would kick in higher, strange.
Well also the difference between the 2 cards, is big nearly 40W difference if im not mistaken, not OC'ed. So I can see the higher temps, then again I never tried the stock XL heatsink but im sure temps get around what your getting.

Yup at least a good 40w more not to mention 1.3v default on core and 2.0v default on memory as opposed to 1.1 and 1.8. I guess the extra 250mhz on ram and 75mhz on core also helps. I really hope a better solution comes out to exhaust heat from the case but at much lower temps AND NOISE. I just had this card 1 full day and im already worried of ruining it due to the high temps it has been running at over the past 24 hours. Even with fan at 100% it barely drops below early 50'c idle!

1.065-1.075 and 1.885V default on the XL ;) But the voltage is what contributes to the heat, and I'm sure if I could get my card running stable with 1.3v on core it be in the mid to upper 60's easily with my card, memory of course can't get that high yet.
Oh its 125Mhz difference on the core too ;)

For a quick peace of mind, check the heatsink backplate screws, 2 of mine were loose (not fully snug like the other 2) and when i tightened them i gained a few degrees in cooler temps.

ahmad so you are seeing into the 90c range too eh? I thought it was just me. It took next to no effort at all to get my card into that temp range. I looked up when I got back in the room after a 45 min run of looping 3dmark01 and I had to take a triple take on the CCC temp reading on my secondary monitor. Do you see 90c often Ahmad and how long did you let the card run at those temps?

Just curious, besides ahmad has anyone else changed stock paste and found a big difference? I am running stock paste but am wondering if applying ceramique would net me some better temps overall and if so by how much? Not sure if the stock paste is doing its job or not.

I don't know why, but I never broke 80*C before. Now an hour or so of NFSW and I get artifacts at my 24/7 clocks (which I thought were 24/7). This happened after 2 things:
Updated Cats
Applied AS5
I think I am going to re-apply it again in a few minutes cause idling at 56*C is just no good. I have very good airflow inside my case. If this won't do it, looks like i'll have to wait for Arctic Cooling to get that Silencer out before I can go any higher (btw this is with the case closed).

Well I hope it works out for you but I hope you aren't holding your breath either. I have very good case cooling as well with a 120mm side panel fan blowing right over the fan and I idle about 57-58c in the middle of the day and easily hit and break the 80c mark without much effort. No clue what is going on for me either. Do you hit high temps even with the fan on full or just left low? Thanks.

hmm ok, that is strange then. I hit 55-59c idle with fan at like 30%, if I turn it up I get my idle temps into the late 40's. My max temp of 80c is with the fan at only 50%. Perhaps you didn't put enough paste to make good contact with the core or you put too much. Please try yet again and let us know how you make out. I was thinking of changing the stock paste to ceramique but now I'm scared to take the stock cooler off. I know the AS has to cure but I don't think temps will drop that much afterwards.

Hey guys, two things I noticed about the new ATI Tool that I have to ask about.
1.) This is weird but when opening ATI Tool to check my volts on my XT it says 1.275 however I noticed after using it for awhile if I check again it now reads 1.375 without me having no interaction in changing it. Very weird, anyone else notice this? I am unsure if it is a bug in the program or perhaps the card intelligently raises volts under high stress to keep it going without a crash. This new architecture from ATI is very programmable and full of potential and surprises so who knows.
2.) When editing the properties of a profile there is checkmarks for what you want to include in the profile. One of what I noticed is an option for memory timings. What is this? Perhaps I am missing something but can you change memory timings for the new X1800 cards using this program or is this perhaps an option to keep the memory timings on the card the they should be without altering them during an OC or vise versa like overdrive and overclocker.exe are suspected of doing.

Either they had a much more efficient TIM, or some setting I am using is heating this thing up like a mofo. Or it could be that I have the GPU at 1.3v does that.

extra voltage definately heats this card up more. I doubt they are using a more efficient TIM than Arctic Silver/Ceramique but perhaps they are using better than average and better than stuff used in the past.
Anyone else here change nothing more than stock paste and found a difference of either better or worse on temps if still using the stock cooler?

And yes the fan was at 100% Full-Speed.
My max load temps so far all together have been 76C and I am not sure when that was...when I was clocking that high it was pretty cold in my room. About 8C in my room and I have a blanket wrapped around me at the time.

When you have 5 case fans, a 92MM delta on the CPU, 5 harddrives, a 120mm on the memory and the motherboard fan at 7000RPM, another fan won't make that much of a difference. Its loud yes, but I don't mind.
Delta is a 120CFM monster, I keep it at 5v. Otherwise I would go deaf from it.

bump to the above two questions?
I am not sure of that problem...
As for fans being loud...
I have 4 120mm fans inside my case... two of which are shipped tied together stacked so that it is blowing air over chipset and heatsinks near PSU connector. Also my ran gets alittle air from them as well. So noise doesn't bother me...I am use to it, have been using it this way for awhile now. As for the ATI fan at 100%...I can hear it over all my other fans so it is indeed loud.
can anyone tell me where to measure the voltage on X1800XT pls :)
