Using ATI Tool set fan speed at 100% and GPU temp drops 8C at idle!
GPU @100% fan speed = 46C idle
- weird CCC shows 20C if ATI Tool is running together heh
- according to ATI Tool at idle GPU current draw = 8.2A and stock speed load GPU current draw = 21.8A - 24.5A

Overclocking Tools
Now there seems to be 3 way to currently oc the card but it seems it ain't as straight forward as first thought - see Update below as to how to properly set 3D clocks:
1. ATI CCC control panel - seems to limit max GPU clocks but loosens memory timings ALOT so that you clock mem higher using this tool.
2. X1800 Overclocking tool - available from Driverheaven.net's download section
- this seems to also loosen memory timings ALOT so you can clock mem higher, but you can clock GPU higher than that of with ATI CCC control panel. Read http://forums.techpowerup.com/showpost.php?p=46881&postcount=88
- Also voltage reporting is out of whack and not accurate.

3. ATI Tool 0.25 Beta 9 - http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=6615
- artifacting scanning doesn't work properly as it reports artifacts at stock (known bug)
- now this tool tightens the memory timings so much tighter than the other 2 tools above, so you can't clock mem as high.
- BUT! According to http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=80637, 600ish mhz on mem in ATI Tool 0.25 Beta 9, is already 200-300pts higher in 3dmark05 than 700-800+mhz mem in X1800 Overclocking tool apparently.
- Also voltage reporting is pretty spot on with ATI Tool.
Unfortunately, this version of ATI Tool is far from perfect for X1800XT users see
- I get this problem too when oc'ing a tad in ATI Tool screen goes blank when i hit run in 3dmark05 and other benchmarks http://forums.techpowerup.com/showpost.php?p=46614&postcount=58
- http://forums.techpowerup.com/showpost.php?p=48149&postcount=154
- http://forums.techpowerup.com/showpost.php?p=46739&postcount=69
- minor change in clock with ATI Tool on GPU to 600mhz and 3dmark05 completed and my ATI Tool reported GPU at 378mhz and dropped 3dmark05 score from 8,400ish to 6,900ish similar to this guy's issue at http://www.rage3d.com/board/showpost.php?p=1334041783&postcount=47
ATI Tool seems to only report the 2D speed when run first go. Here's voltages and temp panel:

I think all X1800 owners should start bagging the cards oc'bility to force ATI to release their WinCLK overclocking utility that Macci used for his preview/pre-release benchmarks for his X1800XT and save us X1800XT owners the headaches we paid AUD$960-1,000+ for :nod:
Update on how to properly set 3D clocks:
- Some interesting info posted at http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1160329#post1160329
NONE of the 2 programs mess with timings guys. i tested it yesterday. people just think so becourse that oc tool dont set the actual clock that you set. thats why i wrote above that you have to use ati tool to SEE the clocks...not to SET the clocks. ati tool will show you the right clock....oc tool can show you 800/800 but ati tool will maybe show you 790/800. then the actual clock is 790/800. thats why people get confused, and think that oc tool mess with the timings...it does NOT.....it just dont set the clocks right )
#eva2000# use ati tool for volts....use oc tool for clocks...but clock the 2d clocks...(600/700 defult) :)
All these can only be used if ati smart and ati hotkey is disabled.
Yay, can confirm it works:
In service manage in windows disable ATI Smart and ATI Hotkey services and reboot pc. You loose temp reading in CCC but can use ATI Tool to view temps.
Use X1800 Oc'ing tool and set 3D desired clocks using the 2D panel
Use ATI Tool to only verify and view the 3D clocks are set correctly. So should be same as what you set in X1800 Oc'ing tool.
Whenever you set the mem clock, remember to set the GPU core clock again, or it will fall back to lower clocks and when you set the GPU core clocks again, remember to set the mem clock again, or the same will happen.
Setting voltages, OC'ing tool reports wrong voltages so DO NOT use OC'ing tool to set voltages, use ATI Tool to set voltages. Example, GPU voltage reported in ATI Tool is 1.275v will show in OC'ing tool as 1.3v. Set ATI Tool GPU volts to 1.3v will show OC'ing tool at 1.325v but the real voltage measured by DMM is closer to 1.3v as set in ATI Tool.
As you can see it works!
3dmark05 @default 621/747 clocks set in 2D panel of X1800 Oc'ing tool app.
http://www.fileshosts.com/DFI/NF4_SLI_D/results/Opteron146/CAB2E_0540FPMW_1/Hydrocool200/Gskill/PC4400LE/2x512/799_800/704_2BTA/LDT3x/10x/200-200-2225-7-14-2222_1.4-1.3-1.6-2.87_3684_ds7dds1_7N5_16clk_16x7x/3dmark_X1800XT/OC_results/3dmark05_621-747_8636_tn.jpg
I then tried setting 2D clock in X1800 Oc'ing tool higher in same windows session and got:
650mhz = 648mhz real GPU 3D clock
660mhz = 654mhz real GPU 3D clock
670mhz = 668mhz real GPU 3D clock
680mhz = 675mhz real GPU 3D clock
685mhz = 681mhz real GPU 3D clock
690mhz = 688mhz real GPU 3D clock <-- had to increase and fix fan speed from 31% to 100%
700mhz = 695mhz real GPU 3D clock (upped GPU volt from 1.275v stock to 1.325v in ATI Tool - shows at 1.35v in OC'ing tool)
702mhz = 702mhz real GPU 3D clock (1.35v ATI Tool)
703-708mhz = 702mhz real GPU 3D clock
710mhz = 708mhz real GPU 3D clock (1.375v ATI Tool)
711-715 = 708mhz real GPU 3D clock
716mhz = 715mhz real GPU 3D clock (1.4v ATI Tool)
717-723mhz = 715mhz real GPU 3D clock
724mhz = 722mhz real GPU 3D clock (1.425v ATI Tool)
730mhz = 729mhz real GPU 3D clock (1.425v ATI Tool)
740mhz = 735mhz real GPU 3D clock (1.425v ATI Tool)
745mhz = 742mhz real GPU 3D clock (1.425v ATI Tool)
750mhz = 749mhz real GPU 3D clock (1.425v ATI Tool)
Note:
- interesting ATI Tool reports default GPU volt = 1.275v
- but ATI CCC according to folks measuring via DMM GPU volt default to 1.33-1.35v ????
same goes for mem clocks in X1800 Oc'ing tool
780mhz = 774mhz real mem 3D clock
800mhz = 792mhz real mem 3D clock
810mhz = 810mhz real mem 3D clock
820mhz = 819mhz real mem 3D clock
830mhz = 828mhz real mem 3D clock
840mhz = 837mhz real mem 3D clock - (artifacts when GPU voltage is stock but at 1.375v GPU volts no artifacts even though mem volts are still untouched at stock! )
850mhz = 846mhz real mem 3D clock (1.375v GPU ATI Tool)
860mhz = 855mhz real mem 3D clock (1.375v GPU ATI Tool)
870mhz = 864mhz real mem 3D clock (1.375v GPU ATI Tool)
880mhz = 873mhz real mem 3D clock (1.375v GPU ATI Tool)
890mhz = 882mhz real mem 3D clock (1.375v GPU ATI Tool)
900mhz = 900mhz real mem 3D clock (1.375v GPU ATI Tool) - artifacts

WinCLK uses the same sensor/program to overclock as OC tool. there will be no difference :)
Macci had a press sample X1800XT with a different BIOS:)
Also..OC tool do not lower the timings. it just set a lower clock than actely showen by the program. i though that it lowered the timings as well to begin with, but after getting 12k yesterday with oc tool, i found out that oc tool just lower the clocks a little. when setting oc tool to 823/972, ati tool shows 816/972. then all i had to do was just to set the clocks again in OC tool, ands it worked. my score was exactly the same as with ati tool:)

Heheheh, nice.
I got pretty much exactly the same, with a complete stock system, at 2.2ghz, so your looking good there.
Never heard of this tool that Macci used? i think ATI should release it for the general public, totally agree with you EVA, ive just spent 400quid on this card. overclocking my 256mb GTX was far easier. If it wasn't stable, it told me it wasn't.
Hopefully rivatuner will help us out 2moro!
How good is this stock cooler? 100% fan speed is insanely loud, lol, i think 40% is max i wanna use.

Yeah went a wee bit overboard with the photos :D
Went with HIS due to availability, retailer had 2 cards in stock everywhere else had ETAs between 1-3 weeks smack bang into Xmas holiday closures heh
Yeah 100% fan speed is loud and whiny, even for me who has 6x 190cfm delta fans LOL... probably around 75-80% fan speed is ideal for me
I went with the HIS as well...seems to be a very nice card.

I ordered a BBATI X1800 Xt from ZZF. Should get it in 2days with my RDX200 CF-DR (also got an eXpert here). Will buy a CF mastercard as soon as they are avail. Now I am buying videocards the day they are out I learned my lesson. Had a chance to buy a 7800GTX 512 from Newegg day it came out for $700 (before price went up to $750) but I was like nahhh its only going to get cheaper. Sure learned my lesson. Now its immpossible to get. Period.
Eva did you decide to go with the x1800xt because of a lack of gtx 512mb availability or you reallly wanted to play with this card?

Yeah lack of immediately availability of 512MB 7800GTX, ETA on XFX was like 2-3 weeks and Leadtek was out
Apparently Nvidia is keeping most of them in USA so allocation to Australia is scarce like there's less than a dozen or 2 for whole of Australia!

Try running with ATI Tool only, no Overclocker. You will see that a much lower memory speed scores higher than a similar clock using Overclocker ;) Remember, once overclocker is opened whatever it does cannot be undone until re-boot.
Here's some examples on my XL with same CPU Mhz
675/909 = 10,105 via Overclocker
668/703 = 10,145 via ATI Tool
I actually prefer Overclocker. It is harder for me to reach the same scores running ATI Tool. Even though I have beaten my Overclocker score by a small amount, it took alot of work to get there.

I did run ati tool alone without oc tool open at any time. the results are exactly the same here. the thing that make people believe that it mess with the mem timings is, that the oc tool can show you 800/800 but it will infact be 790/800. set the clocks 2 times with the same clocks, and the result is exactly the same. i tested it yesterday ;)
when you set your clocks to 675/909 with oc tool, then the actual clock is around 660/909. check with ati tool, and you will see the correct clocks.

so 1.275v ATI Tool = 1.3v via DMM approximately :)
Yep, just tried again and used two different DMM's both giving me
same result of 1.30 vgpu.
PSU I am using on my test set up is Ocz 600W powerstream.

Now to work on mem clocks.. does mem clock potential rise when GPU volt is increased too ?

Had a chance to buy a 7800GTX 512 from Newegg day it came out for $700 (before price went up to $750) but I was like nahhh its only going to get cheaper. Sure learned my lesson. Now its immpossible to get. Period.

I was able to push the XL memory hard by increasing the cpu voltage, this is not the same on the XT.
I need to connect the XL to some cold and go for a decent score but it is in my gamer connected to my new 32" HD display. unreal NFSMW gaming, wide screen owns for racing games.

eva, have you changed voltages or that "stock heatsink air" essentially means "stock heatsink, stock vgpu & vmem air"?
And how's the overall feel of the card, compared to the 7800GTX 256Mb?

that is 3d2k1's low car bug it can vary from runs by upto 220pts so within normal range... probably more accurate to set 3d2k1 to loop each test 3 times to get to a final score averaging 3 runs :)

it is faster than my stock heatsink air 256MB BFG 7800GTX in benchies so far..
Oh shush....you and your Opty! LoL
I am trying 715/855 again with v1.400 on the Vgpu

No matter what I still score higher with ATI CCC at 690/800 than I do with clocks I set with OverClocker.
eva2000

try dropping ram down to 802 and see what happens
I have...still nothing..those RAM settings are fine because I have ran them with lower core clocks...and scores were still really low..
I don't understand this whole Overclocker..setting clocks...checking them in ATITool...stuff. I think I will wait for any really further overclocking until ATITool is completely fixed and ready to use. In the past it has always worked great for overclocking my older ATI Cards.
EDIT:
Have you ran AquaMark3 yet and see what you get in that?
Although AquaMark3 will not finish it keeps crashing on me...I do not know why...never had an issue with it before..
Also to add..
This is what I got in 3DMark03.

Well here's where i am now
setting 2D clock in X1800 Oc'ing tool higher in same windows session and got:
650mhz = 648mhz real GPU 3D clock
660mhz = 654mhz real GPU 3D clock
670mhz = 668mhz real GPU 3D clock
680mhz = 675mhz real GPU 3D clock
685mhz = 681mhz real GPU 3D clock
702mhz = 702mhz real GPU 3D clock (1.35v ATI Tool)
703-708mhz = 702mhz real GPU 3D clock
710mhz = 708mhz real GPU 3D clock (1.375v ATI Tool)
711-715 = 708mhz real GPU 3D clock
716mhz = 715mhz real GPU 3D clock (1.4v ATI Tool)
717-723mhz = 715mhz real GPU 3D clock
724mhz = 722mhz real GPU 3D clock (1.425v ATI Tool)
730mhz = 729mhz real GPU 3D clock (1.425v ATI Tool)
740mhz = 735mhz real GPU 3D clock (1.425v ATI Tool)
745mhz = 742mhz real GPU 3D clock (1.425v ATI Tool)
750mhz = 749mhz real GPU 3D clock (1.425v ATI Tool)
same goes for mem clocks in X1800 Oc'ing tool
780mhz = 774mhz real mem 3D clock
800mhz = 792mhz real mem 3D clock
810mhz = 810mhz real mem 3D clock
820mhz = 819mhz real mem 3D clock
830mhz = 828mhz real mem 3D clock
840mhz = 837mhz real mem 3D clock - (artifacts when GPU voltage is stock but at 1.375v GPU volts no artifacts even though mem volts are still untouched at stock! )
850mhz = 846mhz real mem 3D clock (1.375v GPU ATI Tool)
860mhz = 855mhz real mem 3D clock (1.375v GPU ATI Tool)
870mhz = 864mhz real mem 3D clock (1.375v GPU ATI Tool)
880mhz = 873mhz real mem 3D clock (1.375v GPU ATI Tool)
890mhz = 882mhz real mem 3D clock (1.375v GPU ATI Tool)
900mhz = 900mhz real mem 3D clock (1.375v GPU ATI Tool) - artifacts
Question is GPU voltage of 1.425v in ATI Tool too much for stock X1800XT heatsink with fan speed set on 100% ? It idles at 47-51C @749/882 :)

Jesus EVA, how are you clocking so dam high on stock? Guess ill up the fan speed, and up the volts then.
eva2000
11-30-2005, 07:10 AM
thanks yeah it's a nice clocker but the question remains, is GPU voltage of 1.425v in ATI Tool too much for stock X1800XT heatsink with fan speed set on 100% ? It idles at 47-51C @749/882
seems 1.425v GPU volts is where things just started flying oc'ing wise :)
I am going to have to try that as well. Let me disable services and I will start giving it hell! LoL
Will too high on Mem give you a hard lock as well?
eva2000
11-30-2005, 07:17 AM
haven't experienced any hard locks yet... 890mhz (882mhz real) mem is max stable
895(891) and 900(900) mem clocks give me artifacts
Ok then when I get a hard lock it is my core. Thanks.
Yeah I had tried 900 on the Mem once and got Artifacts LoL really bad and had to reboot.
Ok tested some more I got hard lock at 749 @ v1.425. So it seems you may have a better clocker than I do here. I was able to do 730 @ v1.425 though.
Edit: Trying 750 @ v1.450....
Only clocked CPU @ 200x11..0 at the moment though so score seems alittle low...
I got this at 742/846 in 3DMark01 (755 was a no go on v1.450)
29,213 (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=8809228)
I am going to test all my GPU overclocks first at Stock CPU speeds for now on and then switch it over to 2.75 for high scores.
Has anyone else had an issue with clicking on the restore default clocks with OverClock that you lose video feed?

Yeah opterons are :cool:
question for SIOUX and others
- interesting ATI Tool reports default GPU volt = 1.275v
- but ATI CCC according to folks measuring via DMM GPU volt default to 1.33-1.35v ????
which is the default GPU voltage for X1800XT ?

The defult volt is 1.275 on my card. but sometimes when i play games the voltage jumps up to 1.375 automatic...very strange.
So what exactly is the exact default voltage on the card? And is ATITool reading the proper voltage for the memory as well on the card? Is it possible that there is a 2D voltage and a 3D voltage?

heheheh, congrats man, GL with the new card!, were all loving our's! :D
Well things ae looking a bit better for me. After reading a fair lot of posts here on XS, ive pretty much got it nailed now.
using the Tool to oc and set the fan speed, and checking clocks with ATI-tool and changing volts.
Just did an 05 run ar 708/819 actual clocks, i upped the fan speed to 4000RPM, and upped the Vcore to 1.3, got 9881, which iam pretty pleased with, goal is 10k. http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm05=1502128
So what is stock volts on these cards then for sure?
I am not sure if anyone knows the actual stock voltage or is 100% sure on what it is. I guess only ATI really knows :p

9972 at 715/828 1.3 Volts. Id did 728 core and it crashed, so seems this is the limit on the core, with these volts, load temps are about 60 odd Cat 75% fan speed, bit scared of using more volts, lol.
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm05=1502264
Nah I used v1.450 and it was fine...just watch your temps is all. Use ATITool and have it save temps to a log so you can go back and see what your high was.
Also what 3rd Party Coolers will work on this card and which would be best for cooling. I want to stay with Air-Cooling. But I would like a better cooler. I know the stock is good but there is always room for improvement.

what CAT drivers you using ugp ?
I haven't touched the mem voltages as bit confused what is for what ? there' s 2 mem voltages
1. MVDDC = core voltage of mem chips
2. MVDDQ = voltage of memory output buffers
when should either or both be increased ?

Interesting future for video encoding with ATI Avivo Xcode http://www.chip.de/artikel/c1_artikel_17670022.html?tid1=9227&tid2=0
CHIP Online had the opportunity to test a beta version of ATI’s still secret „Avivo XCode“ encoding tool. It uses the power of the GPU to reduce video encoding time –into virtually any format – drastically. Our results show: The new ATI solution easily does it 5 times faster than even the fastest CPUs available today!
Traditional video encoding tools rely solely on the PC’s main processor for the extensive calculations necessary when en- and decoding video sequences. The secret ATI Avivo XCode tool, however, additionally employs the power of ATI’s X1000 series’ architecture. We assume that the XCode tool mainly utilizes the programmable pixel shader units for it’s number-crunching.
Only new ATI graphics cards need apply
There’s a hook however: Avivo XCode only runs on PCs with ATIs Radeon X1000 series VGA cards; i.e. X1300, X1600, X1800 in their respective Pro or XT versions, as well as their All-in-Wonder version.
Our tests indicate that even the cheapest model, a Radeon X1300 available for around 90 Euros in Europe, can achieve dramatic speed increases at crunching down videos.

3D05 already is a bit low for the clocks i think but the real problem is Nature:
Operon @ 3500 + 750/900 gives me this (used Eva's 40k run as compare link, same clocks on gpu)

Reformatted, reinstalled drivers etc etc. Although i didnt have any artifacts first thing tonight will be cutting back on mem a little, see if 850 makes a difference. Any other thoughts?

Weird 3DMark05 is stable but 3DMark01 isn't...I figured this would be the other way around...
'01 get more Load trough ur card then '05, don't ask my why, but it is a fact. :)
Messured with amps clamp on my 850XT, i think it is the same with the 1800xx cards.

only publish them so can folks can compare with my previous results posted in first post at different cpu and card speeds
as to voltages - no one has said what's safe for X1800XT throughout this thread only go by temps heh so is that too high for voltages ??? load temp at 749/900 is 68C

Very nice scores guys. I hope they fix ATITool for you guys though, im curious if it really helps you on the memory if OC is loosening something on the ram to get higher clocks or not.
EVA: Said this in another post, my guess is mid 70's are pretty safe. Ran an X800Pro with those temps for about a year and its still working today even after a pipemod. Hope to see some faster scores there :)

thanks deathman20 yet again for yoru help and responses. I suppose 1 day of it running into the 80-90's isn't going to kill or weaken the card (will it?!?!). From now on I am going to ramp the speed of the fan up to a sweet spot to keep the card in the mid 70's. I searched high low for an answer to this question and must have missed the post from EVA about this answer so I apologize. If anyone has any other ideas on this matter to add please do share such as what your idle and load temps are and what you feel is safe and danger zone.
I am glad your x800pro is still running after a year at those temps, that is good to know. I bought a BBATI because of their local warranty. I only live about 20 mins from their HQ making a drop off real easy however I had to pay a premium for this card over a cheaper one made by another manufacturer. ATI used to have 3 year warranty however I just recently found out it is only 1 year now which really blows.
Well tonight once it gets cold out I am going to draw all that air in here and start overclocking my CPU to 3GHz and doa run at 750/900. Also I am going to push the voltage alittle more on it as well. My Load temps are pretty cool once I have a lot of cold air in my room. So I don't think I have anything to worry about then.

Same here - memory is great but the core / memory controler is holding it back - even with vmods - I went form 650 stock to 655 vmodded on the memory ..lol. Heat seems to be the culprit - with Pelted Core the memory went up to 680mhz ( tight) and core came alive going form vmodded 650 air to 760

oh come on, i dunno about that. Air is perfectly fine, especially at stock speeds, i wouldn't say water extends the life of a card, modern video cards are designed to run hot, if the stock heatsinks were not adequate, they wouldn't use them.
I am going to have to remove two of my 4 sticks of ram on a cold night and hit 3GHz on my Sandy and see what I can do then. I have a baby going to be here tomorrow...they are inducing labor in the morning at 8am so I will have to put everything on hold until then. I have noticed this with both my XL and XT x1800 card. 01 for whatever reason is much harder on the card than any of the other 2 3dmarks, aquamark or even games for that matter. I can play games for hours, loop 3dmark03 and 05 for hours without issue however 01 will crash to desktop before too long if I really start to push it. I found on my XL if I just gave an ever so slight bump in volts 01 too would loop for hours on end without issue. Heat is a big issue for me on my XT card which it hitting into the 80's c without much work so raising volts is not an option. I was raising clocks through the overdrive tab in CCC and set them to 690/800 (max) and that would run through any 3dmarks, aquamark and games np but 01 would crash to desktop. The only way to get 01 to loop for hours on end was to lower the core down to about 680 (675 actual). I did this today and was finally able to loop 01 over and over with no title screens between tests for a good 4+ hours. I wish the card didn't get so hot as I would really like to start pushing it more. 675/800(792) is not bad though and nets me nearly 9.6k in 05. I finally beat FEAR on this card today and the ending never played so smooth.
I am using v5.11s
I tried getting my Sandy to do 3GHz and it was a no go...temps are fine but I don't think it has what it takes to do it with only 1.65 Volts to it...and I don't want to push it any further than that.
I am going to give reflashing my BIOS on motherboard a try and see if I can get some stable 24/7 clocks. I am very CPU limited here.
Unless someone has a nice Opty they would like to give me:p:

Eva, I am going to try the show 3D view in ATI Tool now to see what happens after 30 minutes. If it is still runnign strong that is a good sign, it will also show me temps as I know this gets the card quite hot. Upon running it I immediately get a yellow border of blocks surrounding the 3D image that never gets any better or worse. I hope this is a bug in the program as I had the same thing on my weak XL. yea I found out about the old testing method from my XL which got rid of those yellow boxes. I thought beta 10 had fixed that but I guess not. I take it this is a known problem and without checking off old testing method you too get those yellow boxes?
The weird thing is this. I can run scan for artifacts WITHOUT checking off old compatibility method however show 3D view shows those boxes.
Just to let you know as well I ran show 3D view for about 45 mins and it was still running before I stopped it. I take it all is gravy?
Well with a CPU at 2.75 and ATI @ 750/900 I scored 10,500 in 3DMark05 so I am very CPU limited here. That is the max I think I will hit. I think that is the max I can get on the core and even at that I get artifacts. I shall wait for ATITool to be fixed and then I shall find my stable 24/7 clock.
What do you guys think of the Zalman cooler for these cards? Or would the ATI Silencer be the way to go...? ATI Silencers are the way I always went in the past anyway.

I am unsure if the ATI Silencer will be able to beat the stock ATI cooler as it is already quite beefy and under a similar design. IF so that would be great as I always went the ATI Silencer route in the past as well and loved the cooler temps and MUCH quieter noise.
The Zalman is great on the XL but I don't think it will fare to well on the XT, it just can't handle the load the XT pushes with the much higher clocks and much lower volts. It dropped temps a good 10c on my XL though.

12-04-2005, 04:36 AM
good question, sor far I am finding 680/800 stock volts to be best. I am sure the card has much more in it however with my card getting as hot as it is raising volts sounds out of the question for me. 680/800 at stock volts is still quite nice and can play anygame out there just fine. The fan doesn't have to be higher than 50% either to achieve just under 80c which is nice. Any lower and temps get into the 90's for me and any louder and the whine from the fan is just too much.

The retailer i got my card from posted this:
The HIS importer has one X1800XT 512mb master card coming in on Tuesday. They've asked me to build it into a PC with another X1800XT-512mb using a DFI Crossfire board - it's for the Atomic awards event at Fox studios on Thursday...hope I can get Crossfire to work - I'll put the benchies here once it comes in.

yup so it seems a good few of us are in agreeance on this. Max CCC on stock volts is best for performance to noise ratio. I can't loop 01 for hours on end at 690 so I set it to 688 (682 actual) and that seems perfect to loop and play everything under the sun without a single issue in regards to artifacts, vpu recovers, hard locks, resets and crashes to desktop. You really don't need faster than that. It's nice to have but is just a bonus and for wow factor I feel. Call of Duty 2 with everything maxed, 1280 x 1024 and Adaptive AA enabled plays smooth as silk on this card. I played the last 30 minutes of fear on this card and it ran incredible as well with most things maxed minus soft shadows. I can't wait to see what future Catalyst drivers brings to this card.

I am the same with you...running max ATI CCC will let me and with out any problems at all. I am very pleased with that. Runs games just fine in my opinion. But alittle more FPS never hurt.
Future drivers are going to bring out a lot in these cards I think. By far faster performance more than anything.

hehe true but at the expense of extra heat and noise I dunno by how much it's worth it. Believe me, if my card wasn't running so damn hot I would surely push for more. I barely stay under the 80c mark with the fan at 50% and this is in the winter when temps are cooler. I am dreading what the temps will be in the summer heat as it gets quite humid here in Canada. I hit 90c on this card the first day I owned it and it has bothered me ever since as that is much too high, not to mention unexpected on my part. I have been wondering ever since if I have weakened or damaged my card though it seems to be running well. It was suggested to try and stay mid to late 70's which I am doing now but it was never stated unless I missed it as to what the max rated temp was and at what point ATI claims the temperature has entered the danger zone. I know the little temp meter in CCC overdrive can fluctuate greatly with the needle jumping a whole other line by a simple 1c increase. I wish I had checked where on the meter the card was when it was in the 90's but I'm sure it was far into the red. I was much too worried to think about stuff like that at the time so exited 3dmark asap.

have you checked the heatsink is making good contact maybe reapply some thermal paste ?

12-04-2005, 05:54 PM
Yea all seems fine. I have to wonder though, why do you think something is up with my card? Is 78c max with a fan load of only 50% really that bad? I thought that was the norm with these cards? Some people still hit 80c with the fan at double the speed running at 100%. My card idles from 55-58c just like everyone else as well. Perhaps I am missing something but again I am still on stock cooler with fan at 50% not 100% like some are running. I set up ATI Tool to throttle the fan depending on the cards temp and the fan only kicks into 50% above 79c. Anything under that and the card fan runs at 40-45% tops.
I was thinking of changing the stock thermal paste to ceramique to see if it would net me any gains however I have heard of very few people actually doing this with any success. One individual changed thermal paste and is now getting worse temps. Until I know for sure I will see some sort of gain I really don't want to muck with this card just yet. Only had it 3 days now. I thought it was you who posted or was quoted on posting that under 80c is just fine as a temp for this card especially on lower than 100% fan speed?

Well not exactly an XT mind you but my XL running at 1.275/2.102/2.102 with 650/675 is running in the low 60's with the zalman. That is truely starting to sound very warm.

while i run without a case my room ambients are between 30-33C and X1800XT even oc'd never hit past 69C on 45% fan speed... at 100% it's between 62-68C
seems like it wasn't a X1800XT crossfire card the retailer got shipped
Bleh! Shows you how much disties know about the stuff they import - what he handed me today was an X850XT Crossfire card, not an X1800XT.
It gets 5960 in single card mode and 8400 in Crossfire mode under 3dm05 with a 3500+ at stock. Think I'll jam an x1800XT in there instead.

Ya I checked. I was actually quite surprised to see just how much air was actually pushed out of the back of this thing. You can feel it from a good few inches back from the case and yea it was quite warm to the touch.
Thanks for your continued interest and concern on this matter however. With your card doing so well you could just be ignoring my posts as tough luck but you aren't. What are your thoughts on changing the stock paste to ceramique?
eva2000
12-05-2005, 02:35 PM
Yeah on 100% fan speed it exhausts ALOT of air out!
Strange is i've been frequently several forums' ATI sections and folks with BBATI brand of X1800XT seem to get higher temps... unless on those forums you're the same poster that is ? :)
80C some folks say is normal - it probably is but you're not going to get much oc out of it or even comtemplate adding voltage to it in that form.. so yeah i'd tried ceramique first use Artic clean solution to properly clean off the GPU stuff
i used Artic clean on my DFI NF4 chipset heatsink and that yellow TIM came off in piece with one swipe of my custom cut sized plastic credit card like scraper hehe
oh when you take heatsink off for first time, take some close up high res photos of the TIM on the GPU core so we can compare with others later...
who knows i might try water cooling my X1800XT (first time H20 for video cards heh)

Thanks for the info and response Eva2000. To be honest I frequent no other forums except this and amdmb.com however there I only lurk and browse and very rarely post. I have heard nothing about BBATI users getting higher temps though that could be a possibility. Would you mind cutting and pasting me some links to other forum posts you have read which people are talking about their BBATI cards hitting into the 80c mark and being normal? I would like to see with my own eyes what others are saying. In the meantime I am going to browse around and see what I can find.
As well My card is overclocked to CCC max of 682/792 to get those temps so it's not like I'm at stock. There is still so much I hope for this card such as a bios editor or a different bios from another manufacturer altogether to flash and try out.
I wonder if bioses could be different? Do me a favour? Check and see the date of your bios build? CCC information tab will tell you. I want to see if it the same as mine as I know what build date my bios is.
I will try ceramique soon to see if it changes anything. I will surely take some close up pics to share here.
Thanks again and if you have anything else to share please do as I appreciate your time and input in this matter.

no probs hope you find out the reason for high GPU temps!

I have read those threads and no one gives a reason at all. They simply state their temps and everyone else takes note and leaves it at that.
All I can think of is bios differences if any though I doubt that. Perhaps you missed it a few posts back about my request for you to check your bios build date. Would you mind doing so? The information tab in CCC as well as Everest if you have it installed will tell you the date of the bios of your card. If you could take a couple minutes to look into this and post your findings here I would appreciate it. I have my bios build date so want to compare it to yours and see. Either the bios works the card differently to generate more heat or the bios reads the sensor wrong possibly and posts higher temps than other manufacturers. Since we are using the same drivers the only difference has to be in the physical card itself. If you are in 30c ambient temps I find it very hard that you get late 60's full load unless something really is up but who knows. I am not questioning you or calling you a liar by any means just quite surprised and perplexed to be honest.
ATI has always ran higher for some reason...BBATI I should say...
Even back when the 9800XT where out..I have an ASUS and my buddy had a BBATI and his ran about 20C higher than mine did for some reason. And when I had added my Silencer on it, ut really dropped alot more then too.

I like how it says Built By ATI in the Manu section of it...

yeah mine says same even though it's HIS hehe
guess no difference in bios maybe something physical then ? or just different GPU cores have different temps like different AMD64 cores produce different temps ?

oops sorry bud, I must have missed that. My Bios date is also 10/18/05 so there goes that theory. Oh well, weird how it was mentioned that the 9800XT ran hotter back in the day when built by ATI over other manufacturers.

Maybe your case is a lot more cramped, and has less airflow?
Mine is getting hot, over 80C. The stock fan/sink combo is good, but it's just to loud.
Well I also have my room very cold at time when I was pushing the core clocks. So that did help a lot. Like right now idle with normal room temps my GPU is at 54C.

yea my case does have a lot in it but it is half decently organized, at least as good as it will be for the amount of stuff I have in it. My idle temps are usually 55-58c too. I know of a few people including Hicks now that get into the 80's on full load so I am not going to worry about it anymore. I bought a top of the line card hoping it will last. IF it doesn't well I have 1 year warranty with ATI for this very matter, if I don't go R580 before next fall. Even at 80c the card runs beautifully. Never a crash, lockup, vpu recover nothing. Artifact free as well. Played COD2 for at least 2 hours straight this morning without an issue and that game has a lot going on too. Checking my temp monitor log of ATITool temps were never higher than 79c with fan at 45-50%.
HIS has a 3-Year Warranty correct?

BBATI used to have 3 years yet I just found out this past summer that they bumped it down to one. Not cool.

HIS has a 3-Year Warranty correct?
not sure in OZ warranty is done differently we don't deal with the manufacturer for the initial 1yr of warranty but with the retailer we purchased from
so if video card had 2yr warranty, 1st yr with retailer 2nd yr with local disty/supplier (never with the actual manufacturer)
problem is most retailers in OZ only list their 1yr RTB warranty
some like BFG have 3yr RTB and rest with local disty
HIS i've only seen the 1yr RTB listed with retailers... not sure if it has 2 or 3yr
Well whats nice is when NewEgg runs out of these and something goes wrong with it they give me current value or a substitue for the card. They did that when I did a RMA on my ASUS 9800XT...they replaced it with a Gigabyte x800Pro which I was very happy with because that card clocked well.
Well in my testing I switched the to WarCat v5.11XT drivers to see what they would do for me...
This is what I managed with them.
CPU/Mem @ 250x11.0 200FSB @ 2-2-2-5-2T
x1800XT @ 690/800
3DMark05: 9,237 (With WarCats v5.11XT)
3DMark05: 9,265 (With ATI v5.11)
It's not very cold outside right now or I would set to my max overclocks. Right now the core is at 76 Full Load at 690 on the core. It will have to wait for another day I guess on that.
So as for that there is no help there it seems. Time to test a few other Apps and see what I get I guess.
For a CPU @ 2.2 and the Memory on a 2T Timing mode.. is 28,916 a good score in 3DMark01SE?

Hey guys thanks for the info in this thread. It has really helped me get my x1800xt going. It does not seem that there is a consensus on how high you can go with voltage. What would you guys say is a safe every day for overclocking?

As for the voltage...just make sure your temps are kept good and decent with any clocks you have. The heat will let you know if there is too much voltage on it or not.

Well so far with stock voltages I can hit 37k in 3dm01. This at 670 800. Is there any way to monitor temps while running 3dmark? I do not see a way in the ati tool to keep temps always on top.

Wow, 10536 new 5.12 Cats, slighty higher clocks at 735/870. Temps reached 70C though! and 3dmark 03 froze, so i guess this is my limit? Temps seem way to high though compared to your's EVA? 100% fan speed.

yeah i'm 100% fan speed on mine
just tried cat 5.12 betas and 5.12 officials and definitely lower scores by -50pts in 3dmark05 and -100pts in 3dmark2003, probably better for dual core cpus instead of my single core cpu heh

I have just the X1800XT(512) since some hours now, nice card FEAR run really fine...
I have begin trying OC them, but with official 5.12 and at this time.
First result at stock GPU speed,mipmap HQ, card out of the box.
CPU 2.95Ghz: stock 9'131
- 650/780, 9'441. same settings.
- 670/780, 9'771 "" ""
This is just for a try after install the card, i will look what i can have this week-end when i have time for applied the info you give for OC the card, and pehraps install the card under water if i find time.
This card seems clock really well with little a OC lol
I have see you talk about the OC tool, from Driver Heaven but i have not find this soft on their site.. What is the exact name of the tools, and where i can find it, plz ?
Other question, Is there a tweak for modify the max OC possible in CCC?

Thanks so much, i m just under 10K yet with the CCC Overide... I need too get my OCZ 4800 TCCD( in RMA) for have a better OC of my CPU, and a Full Bandwith at 680Mhz.. In wait i use Corsair with Divider, CPU is only at 2.9-3.0Ghz..Normally im around 3.1.
Nice card, i come from SLI Nvidia looking to this card i can imagine how work
2x 7800GTX 512Mo.
I have recieve info as Innovatek release a model of watercooler for this card soon looking certainly like the Coolmatik for G70. But pehraps soemone know a good waterblock for this ATI?
Edit: I have forget something, i have read it's needed use the 2D clocks, it's inverted on the OC tool? or it s needed change somehting on driver too..
I have forget too the most important.... Nice work EVA2000 !!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Strange thing, if i use the Overclock tool or the ATI Tool, after set the clock speed, i have blue and red lines appears on screen, the temp. seems correct..
i have fan at 100%, more strange this is happend with the same clock speed i use with the CCC Override, and i have not this with this one.
I ask me if there's a possibility in my case the voltage is not set like for 2D, remembering the Nhibitor for modify the bios of Nvidia card and the 3 postions throttle of voltage: 2D, open and up of the 3D speed and full voltage for the 3D. there's too the problem of multiplicator, make me think to the 3 clock point in the 7800GTX, The processor is divided in three part and all don't work at same speed.
Normally i install my watercooler during this week, i just ask me if AS5 can be use in wait for reduce the temp of the card?

All well. I went back to using Stock BIOS. I have seen some peoples MAX clocks drop alittle with the new one.

Tweaks with the 2D clock ( Ati-smart and hot key disable)?
Can i ask you too the voltage you have use?
