My teammate (Scragley) and I had a fun Sunday:

First day of this 146 under Mousepot
(photos to come later once home from work)

Coldbugged chip, optimal seemed to be load of around -5C to -10C, so we ran an over-acetoned mixture with small number of DICE pellets, toping up constantly to maintain temp where we wanted.

Not quite a WR for 146, but damn close and I'm sure we can get more with tweaking volts/temps/ram

Due to time contraints and my good RAM not wanting to work on the day, we were restricted to some mediocre OCZ Value VX Winbond UTT BH-5,
so timings definately not optimised

Will you guys get any bh-5 or utts and run them above 260Mhz@2-2-2-5?

We have 2 sets of utt currently. The best set maxes out around 257hmz if i remember correctly. T_M is working on getting some BH5 though

As I think was said above though, the reults weren't really optimized. We now know exactly what to do for the temps, so next time we can start where we left off and work on tightening up the ram and hopefully pushing the cpu a bit more.

Wich particular Board are you running. Could we see a list of the specifics you used for this run.. Very nice by the way. I have Opteron 146 CABYE FPAW Does 3.1 to 3.2 on water cooling with Old Neo2 Platinum. Have newer DFI and SLI happening latter this week and some Phase comming soon to.. (suppose i could still use my mousepot. Just 100miles to get dry ice though.) Im really glad to see your results here and how you are going about them. I look forward to more info. Maybe will help me working with mine..

By specifics do you mean parts?

DFI NF4 Ultra-D
Opteron 146 CABYE 0540 FPAW
OCZ Value VX - UTT
Raedon X300SE for super pi etc
TopPower 520W PSU

MM Dry ice tube
Acetone
Dry Ice

Artic Silver 5 (ceramique for next time)

and lots of practice :D

Yes.. Very nice. I have the DFI SLI DR. This particualr board has done some over 4 ghz clocks with FX57. I also have MM copper Dice container running Dual 7800GTX SLI PCpwr cooling 510 Deluse SLI ASL. Opty 146. For the most part we have same same. I also have some good Phase comming soon. So plenty of cold to put to chips. anyhow Looks promising for my chip as well. being same as yours. I do have some other memory. Some BH5 512 X2 and some Gskill PC4400LE and some DDR600 made by Team mem. So i hope to have my bases coverd. would be nice if i can get 3.6 as well....Sweet set up you have there.. I like!!!

my 4000vx does about 262 and runs nice timings mostly, this Value VX does about 258-259 with lots of volts, and my 2x256Mb BH-5 i dont know the limit of - i dont use it much.

mobo insulated with nailpolish too btw.

updated first post with photos

Nice results! Thats a pretty fast 32M, i need about 3450Mhz to do 21.50 with 146 Opteron in win XP with me VX mem.

what's your max mhz with air cooling 146 fpaw..?

Is -25C idle? Seem kind of high for DICE or was you running something in background to keep the cpu temps up?

Nice garden btw, must be +20C outside :D

They ran it at this temp on purpose because of coldbug.

Coldbugged chip, optimal seemed to be load of around -5C to -10C, so we ran an over-acetoned mixture with small number of DICE pellets, toping up constantly to maintain temp where we wanted.

Did you used dielectric grease? Someone tell me it isn't needed and someothers tell me to use it, i don't know what to do and i'm going to dry ice my 146 soon... :stick:

I didn't use dielectric grease for DICE. However, if running, for example, vapo or MAchII 24/7 it is advisable to use it. The key is a good insulation :)

Ok, did you wait to power on the board till get really under zero temps ? I'm afraid of condensation in the socket, if the board is on and the socket go down from 5º to lower, may in that process ( going from 5º to -50º for example ) get condensation ? Or there is no time to it ?

Another question, when i get finished, if the tube is cold and the cpu too, may i wait till they get over zero temps ? I wouldn't like to damage cpu pulling up from the tube being cold... I hope you understand me... :?:

Thanks! :toast:

I've run DI without grease like 10 times without a single issue. You don't even need insulation, just nail polish :)

I suggest you pay a visit to the dedicated DICE/LN2 cooling section of this forum, many of your questions are already answered there.

You can run these without any DICE at all for a small period if you really wanted to, the copper mass will take a while to heat up.

As to the air cooling question - i dont know.
It only gets run on Storm G4 watercooling (3100MHz) day to day.

Suprisingly the temperatures where I live are weird for this time of year (last few days of Spring, start of summer.
Normally now it would be 35C+ every day, but the entire qweekend was as you guessed 20C.
I think the lowest ambient was about 17C, and there was a nice cross breeze.

I've been viewing a lot of d ice runs threads, but i feel way better asking on new threads.. :slap:

basically, install the cpu into the mobo, grab your tube and slap it on surrounded by insulation such that the insulation seals against the mobo at the bottom, and away you go.
just chuck in a dash of acetone, then start plopping in some pellets till the acetone cools down.
you are then fine to boot up and see how it goes from there.

anything extra is just to taste really.
i coated my mobo in nailpolish, and ensure a tight fit opf the insulation against the mobo.
