Wireless question

Now, Im no noob to wireless networking, but at the apartment complex I live at only my net connection seems to go down when im plugged into the wall jack...supposedly a port keeps freezing, says the network guy and he told me if when he fixed it and it went down again, its something on me...well I dont see how thats possible considering I can ping myself but I cant ping out =/.

So, my question is this, I have a linksys wireless B gaming receiver from my wireless set up at home, im wodering if I could connect to my college's wireless connection with my receiver? or would I need like centrino stuff? im not on a lappy though...
