i cant say im the most experienced person at networking, but if most people can setup a wireless network then i cant see why i cant.

Basically i have been trying to setup a wireless network between a desktop with a usb wireless adapter running windows ME and a laptop with wireless built in running windows xp pro.

Its easy enough for the adapter to find the wireless card or vice versa, but creating a network is a different matter. The laptop will often say excellent connection and connected and all, but the desktop shows ultra slow speeds, and doesnt show any sign of being connected.

Then when i eventually fiddle so much i get it running, i got to setup an ICS from windows ME to XP, and it knocks out my network (possibly from restarting, but either way neither work together).

Does anyone else have any experience with windows being :banana::banana::banana: with wireless networks?

I haven't had too many problems with windows wireless networking. What exactly is it you are trying to do? Do you have a net connection on the ME machine and your trying to access the net wirelessly on your lappy? My experience with ICS has led me away from it completely. I much prefer to bridge the network connections (your wireless adapter plus the wired LAN card for net access) and use a proxy program on the target machine (your ME machine if it is the one with the net connection) and set your IE browser on the lappy to use the bridged adapter.

This setup has not failed me yet and keeps my F@H rigs net connected.

it shouldnt be too much of a problem now, as hes getting xp for the ME machine, which should make things easier. Although i have xp pro on my 24/7 rig and my shuttle and trying to set up a wired network is seeming impossible.

There seems to be some sort off connection, due to when i turn one computer off the other says a network cable has been un-plugged, and says connected when both are on, but i cant find either computer on the other whatever i do. Pinging also fails. Im using windows firewall so that isnt the prob.

on that wired network...one of the systems need to act as a server of sorts. Or maybe you could just set one to 192.168.0.1 and the other 192.168.0.x I'm not sure if that works though.

For me, setting a dial up connection to sharing makes this happen.
