I recently took my first attempts at overclocking on my new rig,,, just to start all my specs are in the bottom but im running water cooling at 21 at idle and 25 at load so i doubt its a temperature issue.

Anyway I tried running the system at a few differnt settings. I have the nvidia 6.82 drivers and the new 0209 bios if it helps

1. just putting the bios at 20% overclock it does auto settings. It posts and gets into windows and all seems fine till I run 3dmark03 or prime95 and it crashs and hangs. Sandra will run tests and puts up good numbers but thats all. in windows shows 960 FSB and 240 CPU bus.

2. tried doing it all manually,.. CPU at 1.45v,,,,, NB at 1.5v ,,,, SB at auto ,,, Hyper transport at 1000 mhz ,,,, memory at 2.1v and tried 2.0v and 2.2 v,,,

I then tried bumping the FSB from 800 up slowly but hit a wall around 900 FSB and wont post after that.. I can get it into windows at like 225 mhz on the CPU but thats only 3.1 ghz and whats the point of water cooling then.

3. I tried loosening my timings the OCZ gold comes at 4-4-4-8 although cpuz shows it at 4-4-4-12 ,,, I tried 4-5-5-13 and 5-5-5-14 but no help in posting.

4. I have tried tweaking voltage but it just wont post pass a certain point and its no where near the reports of 3.8 and 4.0 ghz some are getting out of this setup with different ram.. which leads me to believe its a ram issue but OCZ gold is suppose to be good.

5. Other thing is in bios there is no CPU lock free setting do i cant tweak the cpu bus directly only the boards FSb which seems strange,,,, any help or ideas would be great,,, I can hit 23750 with stock and 24014 with it running at 3.05 ghz but anything past that isnt stable in 3dmark03....

Hyper transport at 1000 mhz

I'm gonna place a bet against that.

It does sound memory related though.

I was getting tips and settings from a review guy over at anandtech the guy who reviewd the p5n32 board,,, he said to change it to 1000,,,, so should i drop it back to 800 which is default and give it a go? so you dont think its ram related,... I feel tempted to just $hit can the 820d and get a 640 ,,, what timings would i need if its not memory related ...?

there is a post about this board in the intel section ...

DO NOT INSTALL 0209 bios or your board will be dead !
If you check out the your manual there is a special quote about Pentium D 820 page 2-7 : "Due to chipset limitation, Intel Pentium D processos work only in single-core CPU mode" That's why your cpu is so cold ..

You should check out your vcore to see if it is not fluctuating to much for your o/c
There is no CPU lock free setting with 820 cause x14 multi is simply the lowest you can use.
Your ram is suppose to be more than ok (1:1 ratio) IMO it is more motherboard related

sorry for my english

the original 0209 bios was posted wrong and then reposted on the ASUS page a few days later and the new bios seems to be working so far as long as its run with 6.82 nvidia drivers,, when i installed the new bios and enable Hyper Threading i am also getting two cores seen and working,, my Sandra scores skyrocketed,,, ai-boost and cpu-z now both see both cores,,, i just cant get the board to overclock to anything usefull,.,,,

if i set my vcore to 1.45 it jumps from 1.39 - 1.41 its not very stable i can see it flucuate in ai-boost is this a bad thing?

ocre fluctuating is common between load and idle on the asus boards.
How far did you go on the FSB? Most likely you'll hit the wall at around 260-270mhz FSB - board won't go any further.

i wish 260-270 I cant get it to post past 225 and thats with trying to tweak every option and running OCZ gold 5400 ram,,, it just wont post or crashs,,,, if i use the 20% overclock feature it can get into windows at 240 somehow even if i mimick all settings manually it wont,, but then it cant run prime95 or 3dmark03 without crashing,,, seems like total crap so far,,, only good thing is that it sees both cores of the 820 but whats the point if i cant overclock it,,,

i am surprised I thought that INTEL Asus P5N 32 does not support D820

yeah it supports it but you have to enable hyper threading in the bios it is strange, but it works it sees both cores, so does ai-boost and cpu-z and my sandra scores doubled so i know its seeing it and working now with the latest bios, if only i could over clock the nforce chipset past 225 manually,,, it doesnt work in single or dual core mode and my temps are super low from my water cooling,,,, I just wish there was a non nforce4 SLI solution
