A friend has a very old 450mhz pentium 2 with 64mb of RAM, and basically it runs fine when its offline, but when it goes online, after about 5-10 mins or a little bit more it will blue screen (its windows 98)

He has a zonealarm standard firewall and avg antivirus, so i wouldnt think it could be that.

Could it be that he has an extension cord over 20metres and its strugging to recieve the data? (most people say it shouldnt work over 20m)

if u mean the AC extension cord, then the length wont matter.. AC travels great distances with no issues and a 20meter extension cord is no match for the AC sin wave.

if u mean the phone cable, 20m is WAY too long and I would be surprised if he was getting 20k on that thing.. cable length has a nasty effect on dialup internet.

BUT i wouldnt think that a slow net connection would make it bsod..

its possible that the windows dialer is messing up his machine or if he uses another dialer that IT is messing the machine up..

dunno if the UK has AOL but if he is using that, its a 99.99999% posibility that AOL is fubaring his machine.. AOL has the ability to bring down a 4way dual core opteron machine to its knees, kick it in the face and then stop on its brains....

hes using tiscalli, which isnt too bader adsl company, but im now thinking from what you say that it might just be down to vulnerabilities in windows 98, and getting furbared from worms and what not.

thanks for help
