View Full Version : Defragging, aftermath wtf!!
My dad was complaining that his computer is really slow and sluggish, so i went to check it out.
All he uses his P4 2.8+512RAM for is EMAIL, INTERNET, VIDEO+MUSIC, MICROSOFT OFFICE things. He has a 80gig drive and only uses <10gigs.
Anyway, i checked it out and it was sluggish as hell. Very slow indeed, so i whacked Disckeep Pro on it and fragmented his C. This is the reults i got, wtf??

But i most confused and concern with the picture if anycan help me. it says my dad's HD is in critical condition.....and the graph looks really wrong.
thanks
i am more concern about the "CRITICAL STATE", something to do with 99% MFT usage and needs to run FRAGD SHIELD.. wtf is that

Never seen that defrag program before. Try using the default Windows one and leave it to defrag until its totally done. Read: Don't use the computer while it's defragging.

Edit :: Try doing a Spybot Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/) and a Lavasoft Ad-Aware (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html) scan on the computer as well for adware, spybots and alike.

I've heard of that defragging program. Executive Diskeeper Pro. It is the first time that I've heard of that error message using diskeeper.

So what happened ? Did you take any of my advice ?
Ryan
No spyware etc whatsoever. When i try to run windows's defrag, it just links to the disckeeper software. oh well, betetr off formatting the drive.

So you can't defrag the drive basically ? You should be able to uninstall Ex Disc Keeper in the Add/Remove Programs section of Control Panel.

LOL...its not an error message. Its just telling you that there isnt enough space for the MFT. Just enlarge it by going to "Change your settings" and then "configure MFT"
This happends on every computer so far I've seen. Apparently, windows default size for MFT isnt very big, which causes the MFT to fragment.
Your dad's hard drive is fine, you dont need to reformat (while it would certainly help things).

I use diskeeper, it's a kickass program, just do all the options in the defrag menu, and set it on setitandforgetit (won't harm performance on your dads pc, wouldn't use it for benchmark pc's though)

I agree it might be time to backup and format.
Bah. The MFT is the master file table (or something to that effect).
If it gets fragmented it's not the end of the world.
It's just the the index of a book. If there's not enough room for the index then it has to be continued elsewhere.
The screenshot also shows that there is little or no fragmentation on the drive.
There's no real cause for concern, although if you do have software that can enlarge the MFT, then it'd be worth doing. But hardly critical.

Diskeeper can enlarge the MFT for you, I always do it first thing on a fresh windows install.. do what kobalt says

if you are going to format I reccomend a low level format. Might take a while but it will certainly not hurt the cause :)

In the pic you will see in red what to do.
*Click on the main harddrive partition.
*Click on the left hand side "change your settings"
*Click on the left hand side "Configure MFT/paging file"
*Scroll down to the windows partion (C:/ usualy) Then select "configure your MFT for this size..."
*It might have a auto option for the size amount, but if its full you should double the default amount.
*Then it will do a lil work for 1-10mins, and then the harddrive should be fully Defragged.
*If windows BSOD's or errors, After this, then A low Level Format is most likly needed. Backup data and format!
